Please help! How to reduce file size?!!
-
I noticed one my skp file is over 100mb. Any changes I make will take forever to save. And worse still . It will crash!!!!
I desperately need help on how to reduce file size . I am not a newbie at all. I really like to like sketchup . But the slow response and crashes make me want to give up using it. Please help. I spend at least 8 hours to set up a interior room scene. And I think at least 40% of the time is wasted. I need help
If no one can help me here. I will consider the private consultation . Please help!! -
Have you at least purged the file to get rid of unused stuff.
Window/modelinfo/statistics purge unused. -
yes.
it happens to all the files that are over 80mb. it respond very slowly and crashes are to be expected from time to time. i don't know if the 2014 version is better or it doesn't make any improvements.
it just doesn't make sense that i have to deal with crashes and slow response. it really makes me unproductive. I think part of reason is me not knowing the best way to prevent the crashes and slow response and part of the reason is sketchup itself. i really need help. let me know if any tricks or tips that will help improve the speed of sketchup. thanks a lot in advance!

Have you tried unticking redefine thumbnail on save? (this should shorten the save time)
Model info......file......(untick)redefine thumbnail on save.

With really large models I use proxy or simple objects for working; I also use an intermediary 3D working layer when editing complex components: so I enter the object with only the proxy showing, with my intermediary 3D working layer active, say for a 3D tree, and when I'm finished I put the tree into a switched-off layer which has 'complex' or '3D' in it's name (to remind me not to inadvertently switch it on).
This way I can have a huge file, but I'm never moving the view when it's complex (which is one thing that SU spits the dummy at)- only exporting a view/image/models etc.
Also have you tried thomthom's CleanUp (on a copy of your file)?
Also what about saving your components as a set (Components browser > far right icon > save as a local collection) and then bring them in when you need them? This way you might also be able to bring them in turned off (I don't know this, but it works with other CAD's).
I also use two scenes; one for working, the second for exporting; for instance my trees are simple 2D circles (1 face and 25 edges) and one that's full 3D.

Can you share the model so i can take a look?
-
It's too hi-poly....
-
What are these?
-
In Frredo Tooks you can have Curvizard display as a toolbar.
-
Sorry, under Tools > Fredo Collection > Curvizard > Default Parameters
You can tweak the toolbar.
In fact under all his tools you can tweak things. An amazing chap he is.

If no one can help me here. I will consider the private consultation . Please help!!Which kind of scene? For rendering? How many polys? Large textures?
If it is for rendering, which renderer? I always use low res dummy textures in my sketchup models with full res textures for the linked materials. -
hi
it would be best if you add 'mac' to your question so other mac users notice...
v2014 on mac seems to be more stable to me...
but I only ever manually save [Apple "S"] and I have save copies turned off as well...
on large models or any with lots of curves, close all other 'Inspector' windows before saving

Above is the file.So curvizard can reduce polygons? I will try it out today!
i use vrary 2.0 for render and this file is only for rendering.
Thanks -
I downloaded the file but i can't open v2013... i still have v8

curvizard can only reduce (or increase) segments of a curve not polygons of curved object.
So how big are your textures? Is it possible with vray to use smaller versions of textures in SU and only render at full rez?
-
Don't forget Goldilocks 2.0... It will weigh the entire model and pick out heavy points.
-
-one problem that keeps happening is material will be duplicated after some crashes or restart in vray material editor. should i manually delete them or run some command? im afraid if i should delete the original one or the duplicated one. the original one usually lost all material settings, have that happened to you?
-also i will try all your suggestions. thanks indeed. i will keep adding update in this post. thanks again for the help.
-i guess i will keep my texture size at minimum since it contributes to the problem.
-
I assume you're only modelling the surfaces that we can see in the above image? I.e. Is the duvet (and the bed) a solid model or just an upper skin?
-
I have the same issue.
Why doesn't the file size reduce when I delete objects?
I have a cathedral in a SU file and the document size is 1.1 GB. In fact most of my files are around the 850-900meg range. And yes SU does crash a lot and waste vast amount of my time waiting for anything to reload.
I've copied it and deleted 90% of the building and I still end up with the same size file. What am I doing wrong?? Please help

Keep in mind that deleting components does not remove them from the file. The components will still be held in the model. Any materials you might have tried remain in the In Model Materials collection as do Styles. Go to Window>Model Info>Statistics and hit Purge Unused to get rid of the unused stuff.
Although not required, I like to use a plugin made by TIG to purge unused stuff because it gives a report of how many of each sort of thing gets purged.
