Thanks for giving it a go, mate! Normally I would expect the outer edge to be exactly how you've done it but the client wants to be able to fit drapes to the edges to close it in at times.... πŸ‘

a square perimeter with a rounded top and a drooping mesh using curviloft would be something like this:

That's pretty much how I had attempted it also, Jeff however the 4 'hips' will actually be welded and stretched so they won't appear to have hard edges....

cheers for the input though! πŸ‘

This how Ferrari deals with it, for info.

That's close, gillies although the surface on the outside of the apexes differ from the inner. seems 'warped to one side.

          Getting close though! πŸŽ‰ πŸŽ‰

            Hi:
I fiddled with this yesterday. I did it two ways. When I did the deed by sections, selecting each curve in sequence, and mirror copied the result, I noticed the mis-shapened circular opening. When I selected everything and then activated the tool, I got a more regular opening. Segment count and size of segments in the curves do matter for more regular surfaces, as well as degree of curvature. My "good" result still had too much torsion/warpage in the finished surface. Did you see this too?

Thanks Tim, what tool did you use?

I'm not really sure about what shape it is you are after but this is Extrude edges by rails.
I don't know how you work white on white? sends me blind.

soften the edges after arraying. (or gap the array at the hips and fill in with an actual rounded surface)

the main point being- if you use that outwardly bulging edge of the top ring as part of a networked surface and the opposing edge is straight, the bulge is going to carry throughout the surface.. if you want the surface to sag in the middle, you'll have to do something like i showed (if using curviloft or any of the 2rail sweep plugins)..
maybe with soap skin& bubble you could get the sunken results as it has the pressure adjuster..

                  @utiler:
I used Curviloft by activating the "tent" icon.

I take the slow, deliberate approach in my aimless wandering.

So this is where it ended up at but still not convinced its the best result.

hmm.. i'm not entirely sure what shape you're trying to get.. this latest version is different than the one you first described (or more likely- i misinterpreted before)

is this what you want? if so, it's easier to draw than the other one i showed.. i'll tell you how to do it if it's the right shape πŸ˜‰

You could use Vertex Tools or even the Smoove tool

Download the free D'oh Book for SketchUp πŸ“–

If you do not have to respect strict profiles, you could give a try to

                            1. Curviloft - Loft by Spline (with Bezier method 2 and play with the tension)

                            Curviloft Tent.gif

                            1. TopoShaper, based on the square and ellipse

                            TopoShaper Tent.gif

In either case, you can refine and smooth better with the thomthom's Vertex Tools

Loft by spline, bezier method 2, tension controls.

Jeff, I should have though about that. Actually, you are probably the one who knows the most about Curviloft, more than I do (I really need to go back to this plugin and refresh it).

@utiler: if you have a profile imposed, it may be better to use Curviloft - Loft along path, as shown in the video.

Note that you must disable the "simplify" option, because it creates an artefact

Fredo / Jeff, that looks like it should turn out!!!!! πŸŽ‰

I wish I knew how to use curviloft to its fullest; Fredo I can't recall seeing a 'how to' document like you have for your other tools....?

This little excessive has certainly opened up some possibilities for different outcomes.
