Oh, that's a blow. Is an edge not a line (clearly not)?

What would you do if you were me? Cutting grooves instead of lines might be possible but fiddly. Do other render apps render lines?

You can always export an line drawing from SU, and then overlay (multiply) over the rendering in photoshop (or similar)
Render apps typically render only geometry.
Take a look at the manuals for vray and try setting up a displacement or a bump map - you can get depth quite easily that way.

So how do people get floor tiles to look real?

They use texture maps, for the most part. And as far as realism is concerned -lines aren't realistic. Look at real-life floor boards, or tiles, for that matter. They aren't separated by lines. So ... one either models the geometry, or uses texture maps.

              Agreed !

Floor tiles are composed in the Vray material with grid for example...

Thank you. I'll look into texture map. At the moment I'm having trouble with rendering my scenes. Crash, crash all the time.

Arrowway has excellent materials with reflection and bump maps for all types of wood floors. They have free preview versions which work well in SU. Most you can buy individually at a very reasonable cost.

                      Model your what?!
                      Great shots btw.

                      Got any hardware setup recommendations?
I'm Mac based. 2008 8 core 10Gb RAM. Is that enough for a landscape with loads of plants?

Your hardware will not matter in SketchUp. You are limited by the 32 bit environment that Google has trapped us into. That and the the fact that VRay doesn't run in a separate render program that could take advantage of 64 bit like other renderers. It's a blessing and a curse.

                          Model your stuff 😉
In regards to your rig, you are doing much better than me. Have you looked into a thomthom "clean up tool" http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=323&t=22920, that might help with some heavy landscaping.
