Naval Cutter "Alert" 1777
-
(well that made no senses. remind me not to post after I've been to the pub)
This is what I meant to say:
Love the formation composition. Wow.
-
Excellent drawings. You've done a marvelous job on these boats. Looks like a lot of detail.
I did notice two things, though. Neither boat has frames or ribs which must be installed prior to planking since they are what give the hull her shape. And the jib stay can't go through the tops'l.
The t'gallant seems quite large to me. I don't know that I've ever noticed a rig where the t'gallant is larger than the tops'l. Usually the higher up the sail, the smaller they are.
You mentioned in the game that the sails can be set as desired. Can that long bow sprit be reefed as well?
Keep up the good work.
Edited to add: While looking at something else, I came across this image of a model of Alert. The foot of her tops'l is cut to clear the forward standing rigging and it does look like her t'gallant is larger than the tops'l. You can see her frames through the hole in the side of the hull.
There's an interesting article about the model's construction by Mr. Cole, the builder.

Superb model and I've really enjoyed following your thread. It must be sweet to play with your model in a game too!

hi axionalias,
how'd you make those hull plating? I'm doing lusitania ship hull and i want its hull appears to it is in the actual Lusitania, but i don't have any plan of its hull plating, how did you done that one i'm really impressed of your work, what plugin you use to do that hull plating?

Wow that is some quality work, nice job. I loved viewing the build process.
-
Hi Saw,
I did not use any plugins for the hull,Its just texturing etc. nothing fancy,A hip like the Lusitania`s hull would be tricky and require a Texture made for it.
Dave as im sure you are aware that this is a game model and in reality the Ribs are not visable,I have modeled The full ribs on ships like these before but it is alot of work for something that will later be removed.
About the sails I am also aware of it,the pictures shown are incorrect, its abit tricky to make cloth fold around a line in a game as you will also notice when she is on a close haul her main square intersects the shrouds and on a run the Gaff intersects the Backstays as well,I have found a way to control this in game but still needs tweaking. Thanks
-
Its been a wile since ive done anything on her,but its time to finnish her up.
Sail Textures have been made and added on, this is a tiresome task that involves modeling the ropes and all the details on each sail, then Baking the texture, then fitting the texture to the sail mesh.
Im happy with the way it turned out,all Dirty and old looking is my style. -
bravo... what an incredible journey this model has been. thanks for taking the time to cut the development shots and render them... the process of watching it come to life was an experience aside from the wonderful model itself.
where do we get this game?
-
Thanks Krisidious, She still has some work before she is finnished, Baking will be the last and most rewarding step.
The Game can be found here, She will be available for both Virtual sailor 7 and Vehicle simulator ( More for Vehicle sim as it is has the latest engine and looks way better ) -
Awesome! Don't know what else to say.
-
that is a really kool simulator... the water effects are amazing. can you put land and buildings in that simulator? after seeing this I'm afraid you're going to have to make a movie and show us the Alert in action.

Well Shes almost there,All baked up and looking gorgeouse in game ,Baking took about 8 hours to do a total of 12 bakes ,8 2048 x 2048 and 4 1024 x 1024. Just have to fit the one glass window and the longboat,im not quite happy with the longboat, might add some more details and rebake,it being seperate makes it easy to modify, might even get a more attractive 18ft Jolly on there.
-
That last image is awesome!
-
thanks for the video... incredible... your attention to detail is that of the old ship model in a bottle masters.
-
Awesome. Virtual shipbuilding.
-
Wow, it looks fantastic. Thanks so much for showing us this, the simulator graphics look superb.
-
The combination of modeling skill, presentation style, and subject matter, makes this
the best thing I have ever viewed on sketchucation.Masterful!
