Sorry guys...I'm breaking into this discussion...but has anyone experienced the diffenrence with SU and a SSD??? Does a SSD boost the performance of SU?

      Thank you!!!

I don't remember where (probably here) I picked it up, but I seem to know that OpenGL (the thing that drives the SU display) does not support multiple graphics cards, so SSD benefits only DirectX, that is mainly used by games.

      Anssi

Hmmm... not exactly that - the guy is probably talking about hard drives and not display cards (solid state drives). Also, OpenGL can run too, over multiple cards - using a Fx3800 or better card. Application dependent, however.

    • RE: Layout cannot open file

Thanks guys. Some info about this problem:

      1- There are no text saved at all, on any of Xml files;
      2- The problem isn't only about the text - some imported images disappears too, and the LO shows a red "X" on screen over those objects;
3- If I have some 4 or 5 objects from one or more big sketchup models, and some images and text, the problem occurs when activating the "hybrid" rendering on those objects - then some bitmap images "disappears" from screen - next time to try open the file, and LO shows this message then exit: "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library - Runtime Error! - Program: (empty) - This application requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information". Even the debug window do not shows up.

The system is a XP64 still Sp2, with several GB of Ram, and LO never uses more that 1.5 GB.

Interesting, but there are no text in the Xml files (including the pageX.xml) - three hours of work simply vanished. If I cannot find the text searching on the Xml files, where is it? Can I send a 30+MB file?

What happened: after about three hours working on the file, an imported image disappeared from screen - I assumed was some memory error (this is a 32 bit app...), and saved/restarted Windows. After that, the file do not open anymore. Interesting too, the autobackup shows it is from three hours back, but I saved the work several times this period.

    • RE: Layout cannot open file

I think the text isn't there anymore - I searched the Xml files, and found some text, but not the big ones. All the Xml is Ascii, and if there was any text, this must appear some sort. But, nothing's there.

The problem is related with the "hybrid" rendering of the sketches - the quality improvement of the drawing is great, but LO have trouble with this feature.

      Sketchup people, where's my text???????

Hi Gaieus, very thanks for the tip - I was navigating on the file without notice that this is a zip file. So.. the trouble is that I inserted all text by hand on the Layout... (I know what stup* thing I done...) I still cannot find any info about my text on the Xml files.

      Any tips anyone?

      Very thanks again.

    • Layout cannot open file

The 30+MB Layout file was saved well, as was the backup file. But booth do not open - Layout 2 or 2.1 just crashes when opening the files. The backup do not render all objects, and the text disappears. Is there a way to retrieve just the texts of the file? Maybe with some kind of editor? This situation is just a nightmare.

      Thanks for any help.

    • Optimize dwg file for import

Hi all people and sketchup gurus - probably this is a newbie question, but I cant find a solution, so this could be of importance to others. I need to import a dwg file with level curves, and need to make a terrain in Sketchup. The problem is, the file is ginormous. How can I optimize and simplify the dwg, reducing the complexity and improving the (sometimes) hand-made curves, also reducing the polys? Thank you very much for any suggestion on any free app to do this.

I think it's a bug - the concept (the logic, the algorithm) of this function is wrong.

Oh, that's so true! Every model done (finished or not..) and the model folder is full with every step imaginable of the entire "development history" - for now, a manual process. This autosave configuration is a must have, but I think that it must be integrated with Sketchup.

And yes, I too think that crashes are related to certain operations when saving, like plugins.

    • RE: I really need your help about xp, vista, and hardware?

There are no single reason XP can't handle your hardware - it handles it better than Vista, for sure. I'm running XP Pro 64 bits with 24 GBs, no problems - runs Sketchup smoothly, as well as other cad applications.

      Regards.

Autosave, is slows your modeling down, get into a habit of saving before any major operation.
Layout, too many great apps out there that do a better job for Google to be wasting resources on this.

Hi Solo, I think autosave is a must have feature - the slows down happens probably because other performance problems, but it can be easily disabled. About performance, I can only think about the core modeler itself - cannot run in 64 bits and cannot use 10% of the actual GPUs abilities.

I just cannot think about any other app that do what Layout does - can you explain?

      Regards.

Every mentioned feature have their specific use. Fog can belong to the least used functions for some people, but it is very useful for a lot of people. Styles are simply a must - and an amazing feature. Layout is getting better, and is soo cool.

I never used the "print" icon from Sketchup!

Maybe Sketchup need to be less a visualization tool and more a CAD tool

surely not, the strength of SU is just not to be a typical and complex CAD but an intuitive 3D sketcher, nothing less, nothing more.

      hth,
      Norbert

I agree with you about simplicity of use, but I can see a clear "upgrade path" to Sketchup, as the program matures to a more evolving solution. Sketchup can be a very powerful tool with not so many advancements, but great ones. It can have an integrated rendering, a modeling core with more features, as mentioned before. If a Cad tool can do all that for free, or for a few bucks, and a Cad tool can do it for almost 30 years (!), why not Sketchup (for five hundred bucks)? Performance is also a serious problem, it is nonsense with the advanced hardware available today - but discussion here is about modeling features..

Another useful feature would be modeling physics. Google can partner with hardware manufacturers to make great use of the GPUs available today.

    • RE: REAL circles in Sketchup

Well, yes, technically, any CAD software can draw circles.

Maybe Sketchup need to be less a visualization tool and more a CAD tool - circle entities are important, and this deficiency can have significant impact on several kinds of projects. Those kinds of projects need to be made with a true CAD tool - for now.

360 sides does not make a polygon a circle...

Please - anyone there using the Ati Firepro v5700? I'm in doubt between v5700 and the Quadro fx1500. Specs for the v5700 are superior for a handful of items, but drivers seems to deliver some problems. Last but not least, ketchup site do not recommends Ati cards...

How much improvement of fx1500 over fx1400?

      Hi Tommy and ALL,

Are there any news about the survey? I found this link ([http://www.tomshardware.com/de/GTX-280-260-GT200-Geforce-Nvidia,testberichte-240063-22.html](http://www.tomshardware.com/de/GTX-280-260-GT200-Geforce-Nvidia,testberichte-240063-22.html)), and this table ([http://media.bestofmicro.com/M/9/110961/original/062.gif](http://media.bestofmicro.com/M/9/110961/original/062.gif)) shows impressive data: under SPECViewPerf 10 benchmark, the 3870x2 score was about twice of the gtx280. I bought cg hardware for more than 15 years. So I like a lot the nv initiatives, like the future MentalRAY on hardware one - truly gold for cg professionals. But those numbers show very deceptive performance for the gtx280, and we all know that it is a card with a very impressive gpu. If anyone could post links or info to viewperf 10 and other benchmarks with the gtx280 I will be very glad of. What's the point? Well, nv could boost a lot their selling numbers if leave this professional versus gaming boards nonsense. Today, all the technological differences between the "gaming" and the "quadros" are vaporware - and we all know this. The results are clear: nv is losing a lot of key and loyal customers - I'm one of them.

    • RE: Hardware recommendations

      Hi All,

This topic is very interesting. I'm using an old 128MB 1400 quadro board, and I`m looking for an upgrade. My system is fast with everything (XP64SP2), except SU - my gigantic models take up to 10~15 minutes just to change views (transitions/shadows disabled). Those models, on wireframe mode, it still take some minutes to change views too. Can the new GTX boards handle SU like professional boards? On SU, I'm in doubt about the advantages - if any - of the quadros over the newer GTX. Since I render Maxwell on a farm, this SU performance problem matters.
Also, can anyone post any links to benchmarks of nvidia versus amd? I found that ati/amd drivers still have less support for OpenGL than NVidia.

      Thanks for any advice.
