    • RE: Push Pull Created New Object That Can't Be Intersected

      Thanks Pilou!

So, would this imply that at some point a did a rotation of the object and didn't quite get it to stick to an even multiple of 90 degrees... that I was off by a fraction of a degree?

      UPDATE #1:

      I've noticed the following...

While the edge I am pulling is absolutely 100% square and plumb (as confirmed by the protractor), the pulled extension is coming out 0.6% off. It's barely visible until you really zoom-in, but it is there.

      Thanks!

      Trip

      UPDATE #2:

I have now found that if I take the one face of the original plate, copy it, then push-pull it to the proper thickness, and then, after than, push-pull the edge to the proper width, it is working-out fine and I can delete the line.

I have Nooooo idea why, or what's going on.

    • Push Pull Created New Object That Can't Be Intersected

      Hello All,

      Need a little help here.

      SU 2017
      Build 17.2.2555
      64 Bit
      Win 10

I used push pull to extend a metal plate. Rather than extending the plate it created a new object which I am unable to join in any capacity to the initial plate. I have tried re-doing the process many times and many different ways... Plate 1 exploded, Plate 1 grouped, Push Pull with new wall, Push Pull with existing wall, post push pull explode, intersect and then regroup, etc.

Now, what happens is then I try to delete the line that delineates the two objects (which it should be only one object) I, of course, lose the entire face of the plate. Normally I can just fix losing a face my pulling the other side, with a new wall, back to the front again. However, in this case, the other wall is also two objects.

I've also tried bisecting the line with other line so that I can delete it in portions.

What's also interesting is that the edges of the plate are a single object (please see image).

I need to make this a single object

Any direction you may be able to provide would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks kindly,

      Trip

    • Edge Smoothing Effect on Rendering Speed

      Hello all,

Quick question.... Does smoothing edges increase or decrease the speed of rendering a model? Intuitively, I would think that it would increase speed as less geometry much be drawn.

However, if sketchup first renders all geometry and then later smooths the geometry, I can see that it would take longer.

I'm simply trying to speed-up a complex and detailed model.

      Thanks so much!

    • RE: Split Object Behaves Poorly

      Ahhh, great!

I love the fact that there is always multiple ways by which to accomplish the same results.

      Thanks kindly!

    • Split Object Behaves Poorly

      Hello All,

Just wondering how to avoid a problem I have seen repeatedly. As seen in this image, I took an object and split it in to two parts so that it could be printed. The scale (as I learned here, is 10x what will fit on my printer (1000's of mm)), so I don't believe this is a scaling issue.

      Split Object.JPG

I split the object by creating a plane of 0.5mm in width, intersecting it with the object, and then deleting the plane and the intersection lines on the object and doing a bit (not much) patching. The problem starts thereafter.

From there on out the walls are all (bizarly) fragmented, long clean lines are actually broken small segments, I'll get the error message "cannot use push pull or [sic] smoothed walls" (which are not smoothed). To make changes (such as the tabs you see) I have to do a lot of gutting and stiching.

This second image may be diagnostic.... It is the hidden geometry that is automatically generated (the one little side wall is on purpose, for printing, everthing else is just sorta like "wtf" πŸ˜„ )

      Hidden Geometry.JPG

What can I do to make this a smoother processes?

      Thanks!

    • RE: Strange Artifacts Appearing

Thanks for the feed back guys!

Yes, I have been modeling to scale for use with 3d printers, which, as you know, are not huge. Scaling-up recently resolved another issue. I guess that should become SOP moving forward.

      Thanks again!

Oh, so, should I not use GSU for "Google SketchUp"? Every industry and ever tool has it's own nomenclature πŸ˜„

      Thanks!

    • RE: There Has to be a Better Way

Thank for both replies! The Helix Around a Curve greatly expedited my work, but it was the "do it much bigger and scale" suggestion that just made it work. 100s and 100s of clicks became about 5.

      Thanks so much!

    • Strange Artifacts Appearing

      Hello All,

All day I have been having strange artifacts appearing in GSU 2017 such as this...

      sa.JPG

Every other facet, face, line, plain, etc executed perfectly, except this one area.

I have also been having ghosting of mesh where a mesh will sort of appear, but not really (should be a closed wall but rather the walls fade to invisible and then I can see the inside of the entity (this is not a "viewing from far away issue"). The pieces of the wall (mesh) will lack definition and have no definitive outline. Often, the shading is just wrong too. X-ray viewing is distorted too, but show nothing there to cause it. This is confirmed by all the other viewing methods too.

I have shut down and rebooted twice.

      Any thoughts?

      Thanks!
