I've just updated to Snow leopard (this morning), and so far I'm very impressed with the overall performance- compared with Leopard. I've also updated to the very latest SU7 build- which seems fine now. Even this website page displays properly! πŸ˜„ πŸ˜„

      What was I worrying about? πŸ˜’ πŸ˜†

Rest assured Andrew, you'll be the first to know if anything doesn't look right. πŸ˜„

    • Eid Mubarak!

Just to let you know, and considering it was Thanksgiving for all those in the United States yesterday (who celebrate it), today is the Muslim festival of Eid. I live in Balsall Heath, Birmingham, which has one of the largest Islamic communities outside of Bradford, in the UK.

      So to all you Muslims out there in happy, happy SketchUp land;

      EID MUBARAK!

Doing without plugins...a stupid way for me. It's really not a big effort to understand the way to install and use them, so I think that people don't use these just by ignorance.

Do you not think this is a rather arrogant attitude to adopt? I have just modelled an entire 600 year old gothic church, in SU7, without a single plugin. Today I threw out SU Animate because it kept crashing SU. I agree with Toxicvoxel. CAD managers hate things like this, and it is easy to see why. A good, well designed CAD systems shouldn't have to have externally developed tool plugins. The functionality should already be there, within the toolset.

Has anyone got any experience with SU animate and Mac? I'm trying to use it, but it just keeps crashing after I end a path. Any suggestions?

I'll try XP- see what happens.

Also, Sorry if this double posts, but the internet is really crawling here!

      Just a thought.

There always seems to be a problem with us Mac users, on where to place certain rubies to get then to work (I certainly have been tearing my hair out so much that I have now given up). Wouldn't it be a good suggestion that downloaded rubies could simply be dropped into the ruby console window, and Sketchup does the placing automatically, rather than us having to place the manually? This would sure save a lot of time, would it not?

Those posts sat there for ever. Google had an opportunity to remove them. It was beyond me at the time how they couldn't see the logic in removing the posts.
What point were they trying t make?

So it never occurred to you that a video as disturbing as this may actually be 'educational' to others? I suppose that you suggest that all looney neo-nazi propaganda being pulled down too? It's important, even if they are disturbing, that videos like these are up there. They obviously strike some sort of emotional in you right? Well they should! However, if you pulled them, how would anyone be able to make or form any kind of opinion or judgement for themselves? I haven't seen this particular video, but I saw much of the neo-nazi nonsense on youtube a few years back before it was pulled. I, like most I would imagine, just laughed at it. It was pathetic. Most of the electorate are sensible enough to know that the people who make these films are idiots, but then failing to give them a platform (which seems to be the norm in the UK), would also be hypocritical, because essentially and ultimately that's what they would like to deny to us.

I want to make my mind up about these things, not to be dictated to by someone like yourself (or Italian prosecutors for that matter) that I can't. That's undemocratic.

      Hi Mike.

I was just going to reach for my credit card, when I noticed that I must pay via PayPal. This would have been fine a month ago, but in the usual PayPal way, they seem to have messed my transition to a new card up- and at the moment I have no PayPay!! Argghhh!! I wish people would take gold old VISA again, or even Kagi, because you can't save any edits in the demo 😞 😒

      Hello,

I am Tatsuya, one of developers of Sketchers Studio. It's nice to join

Yeah! Hi Tatsuya! I just found your software by accident (while looking for stuff on SU Animate on YouTube). This forum is indeed a really good forum- I'm really digging it here too! πŸ˜„

I've got 3 days to do a dynamite animation for a crowd of 120 people, in a church, on the top of a hill, and I'm beginning to get the butterflies!! This software looks just the ticket. I'll give it a spin. 😎

    • RE: Google SketchUp 7.1.6087

Cheers Andrew. I will indeed tell you what happens. I've got to do a 'live performance' in front of over 120 church members this coming Sunday morning, showing the model I have made for modifications to the interior. The vicar has already been 'blown away' by the results from the pre-review!

Next week I will do a clean installation of Snow Leopard, and wiping the whole hard drive. I'll then reload 5803, and give it another whirl. The only reason I haven't bought Pro yet is because of your licensing issue when it comes to platform choice. I don't want to be locked into a Windows version, if I choose to buy another Mac, or vice versa.

      regards,

      Tom

    • RE: Why You Should NOT Vaccinate Your Children

      Bravo! Well said!!

      @unknownuser said:

Dr Mary Ramsay, an immunisation expert at the HPA, said: "We are still experiencing an unprecedented increase in measles cases across the England and Wales.
"This continued rise is due to relatively low MMR vaccine uptake over the past decade and there are now a large number of children who are not fully protected with MMR.
"This means that measles, which is highly infectious, is spreading easily among these unvaccinated children."
She added: "The HPA is concerned that we may see measles epidemics take hold.
"We again are urging parents to get their children vaccinated. Although MMR coverage is starting to improve, we cannot stress enough that measles is serious and in some cases it can be fatal. Delaying immunisation puts children at risk."

      here; http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7819874.stm

I've vaccinated both my kids with the MMR jab. Incidentally, both are in the upper streams at school, and haven't developed autism.

ViaCAD and Shark FX handle DWG/DXF pretty darn well too, you know (and cost half the price of VW).

Solidworks Viewer is also a great freeware solution.

    • RE: Hardware recommendations

Anssi, I think Thom mentioned earlier in the thread that SketchUp requires more CPU power than GPU. I think this is true. Bus speed to the processor is also important, I think? My HP workstation I've had to stop using, despite it having an Nvidia 512mb card, It was a P4 (single core- XP 32bit), but ran at 3gHz or something. I've swapped to this Macbook Pro, which although is 3 years old, has a higher bus speed, and is dual-core. The GPU is an ATI X1600 with 128mb vram, and the performance is better (but is now beginning to show cracks!)

I do need a faster machine. Mac or PC, I would prefer another Mac, but it's what gets the job done for the minimum price. But then again, I've had 3 PC's go wrong on me over the last 4 years, but this (Apple) laptop is still going strong! So what's the cheapest now? πŸ˜’ πŸ˜• πŸ˜• Do I blow Β£2000 on a new Mac, or Β£700 on a PC that may go wrong again??

      Dave,

I seem to remember it being A6 in size. It's silver with transparent plastic. I can't seem to find it in the cupboard- which means it's in the loft. I'll dig it out next week (I need all this week to dedicate to getting this model finished).

It would be great if someone locally had one I could try before I buy one. Staples does have a decent return policy so I might ask them about it.

It's a shame that you're in the States, as you could have had mine for free. I'm not using it. If someone else can get better use out of it? It cost Β£100 or so. πŸ˜„

Yes, the Spacemouse. I've also got one of those....and it's also in the cupboard! Mine isn't the Navigator, it's the older all-black PC only one. While the action is nice and smooth, it has no concept of the 'ground' so my house/ model just spins in space. Walkthrough and look-around, and SU's built-in collision physics are completely disabled. Shame. Have you had any better experience with these?

Tablets are better for neck strain, because you are hardly moving your arms. I'm 6'6" tall too, I think this also has an effect- as no furniture is ever built for me!! Apparently there was an old way of measuring using your arm. If only new houses were built this way , so you buy a new house like you buy a new pair of shoes- anthropometric data changes for each house depending on your size! πŸ’
