I still think it is a lousy development. I liked Google being in charge.

Google was as close to open source as you can get. Now a private company owns it, which means profit. Whether that means banners, user fees, extra stuff we don't need. All Google needed to do was make the software 64 bit compatible with multiple cores and it was done.

I wonder why Google did it?

I think this is a bad idea....what software should I start learning?

    • RE: Legalities of 3D warehouse models - commercial purposes

      Thanks for the reply, Alan!

I think I am covered by the derivative work clause but the TOS is open to interpretation...I could draw all the models for my images but it is fun to mix and match and create something new. (not saying they are any good, mind you, just fun to do.)

I have seen this discussion played out over the last few years and I don't see a definitive answer.

I wonder if anyone has been sued yet so we can see the results?

      Thanks again!

I realize this is an old thread but I'm not sure if the questioned was answered?

So here is my question, can I take models from the Google 3d warehouse, modify them and then use the final image in a book? Without giving anybody permission or credit?
(I'm not trying to rip anyone off)

Here is an image to illustrate what I would like to use in a book.

Great stuff. Can someone explain how to get a painted model out of sculptris into Sketchup? The obj exporter seems to lose the color layers?

      thanks!

      Update:

Fluidray seems to do the job. It just took me a while to figure this out......BUT I still can't get an obj file into sketchup that contains the painted layers or textures.

I download Sculptris and no luck getting the painted object into sketchup.

      Thanks!

    • Mudbox & Maya to Sketchup

Hi, I downloaded mudbox and maya from Autodesk and I was wondering if there is a way to export files that Sketchup will like?

It looks like the FBX file format contains all the info (textures, etc) and I can convert it to obj or dae files using the autodesk converter but no textures. Just nice triangles.
The FBX converter has some sample files and the zombie.FBX file shows all the textures. When I convert it to obj, no textures.
I downloaded the obj importer by TIG and it works well but no textures. Sometimes reverse triangles)

Mudbox seems like a cool app for sculpting and adding textures. If I could get the characters into sketchup than I think it will be very useful.

I could not find a single video on youtube that dealt with this issue. I get the feeling this is not possible.

      Thanks for the help!

      Beautiful!

Do you use a scan of watercolor paper for the background texture?

I bet you have started a mini Photoshop boom at sketchucation!

    • RE: Space baboon

Thanks guys! I have this as my screensaver at work.

Rich, sorry if I put this in the wrong place... I was just happy I made something "postable" (Is that a word?)

It really is about 90% post pro, combining images with Gimp and the model output from Kerkythea. (I added two spotlights in kerky, for the spaceship, to model the lighting found in the NASA image and then combined the images in Gimp)

David has really opened my eyes to how much I can accomplish after a render. You really stop worrying about little mistakes because you know you can fix them later or even improve them. This has really sped up my working time.

      Thanks again!

Inspired by David's great work in post processing and having a coffee break....I decided to practice post pro.

Sketchup model found on warehouse, background from NASA, render in kerky, put together in gimp portable.

    • RE: Whats Your Best Method Of Animation With SU?

I made a couple of quick animations with proper animation. The videos were concept ideas to explain how a county bridge could be built. They were not intended as "final" projects.

I just learned proper animation for the videos and it seems like a useful, if slightly unstable, plugin.

So what I did was setup things in sketchup/proper animation and then export all the images based on how many fps I wanted. THe output was okay but I decided to send them through a batch action in photoshop that made them brighter. (too bright, but I didn't want to wait) Then I just put them in windows movie make.

I have used keyframe animation and I like how it makes "tweens" between scenes. Proper animation has a lot of stuff in the background.

So to sum up, I think you could batch render images from proper animation in something like Kerkythea. (I did it for a test clip but it takes a long time on my old machine) Or you can add things to the output images by using photoshop and batch actions.

I would like to learn how to do better animation myself, so keep asking questions.

Thanks for the help! (Thanks Solo for the thumbs up.)

I like building computers but sometimes it is nice to just plug it in and go...(lousy timing for buying a new computer. Who has money at this time of year.)

And thanks for the tip about downloading windows and using the sticker number. I think I will start it from scratch instead of fighting all the advertising.....

      Thanks!

    • HP computer from Sam's club - good buy?

My computer motherboard just died and the rest of my system is about three years old. I know I could build a slightly better system for the money but I was wondering if this was a good deal?

      http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/product.jsp?productId=prod4850051&navAction=push

I have a better graphics card on my old system I could pop in, if I need it. Also 18 months no interest.

      Thanks for the help.

    • RE: How would you do?...

Hi David, I appreciate all your work in this forum! Great stuff.

Most of the things I do are quick bridge concepts, essentially quick what ifs, for explaining ideas. I just don't have the computer hardware to render a flawless scene in a short amount of time. (Plus I don't have the patience (or skill) to wait for a overnight render.)

I see your style of post processing as the key to turning around a project, in a short amount of time, without a loss of quality. I think sometimes people worry too much about the quality of render vs the quality of the idea. (although you get both)

Not sure I have a point here, but I will be following along this section of the forum, to steal as many idea as I can from you!

      Thanks!

    • Post Pro animation

Thanks for adding this section in the forum! (great work Davidh)

I was wondering if anybody used the Photoshop batch action system for making animations?

For example, I used proper animation to make a quick animation in sketchup. Rendering the 360 output images would have taken forever, so I ran it through a batch action in photoshop to add some interest.(a little too much fake HDR)

Then I assembled the images into windows movie maker (hey its free) and instant short movie. I was thinking I could do a lot of things with batch processing. Maybe render the main element and combine that with sketchup output images? I guess I'm looking for speed...and a nice product.

Is this a good idea? Anybody have some tips?
I made some quick movies to explain possible concepts to a county engineer before starting final design. Pretty basic movies. made very quickly.

Has anyone entered a contest on the website DesignByMany?
      http://www.designbymany.com/

Unfortunately, the building to building competition for a new a bridge design closes this week. The winner gets a huge HP printer. So far the bridges in the competition are not structurally feasible, if that matters.....

Someone here could easily whip a design together and win this,
