RE: Rendering Workshop - Studio - still life
Solo could you give me an idea of how long your last "apple study" took to cook? (great image by the way)
One of the most frustrating things about this process, beside the learning curve, is waiting for the end result. I am using KT on an AMD quad and it takes at least an hour, usually more to get a decent image.
Also where do I sign up for the Solo correspondence course in rendering!
thanks!

RE: Rendering Workshop - Studio - still life
Solo thanks for all the information about setting up a still life! It was really helpful to read some of your tips.
This is a kerkythea effort using a 100 passes of MLT. Still needs work but it was educational....

RE: Rendering Challenge - Bathroom sink
Thanks Brodie, I just found it odd that the quality of the photorender is often more important than the subject matter. For example I design bridges and if I do a great photorender (ha!), the public will comment on the picture and not the bridge!
I guess I would like to see a topic where the subject matter is also addressed. Did the image "sell" you the design or is the photorender the dominant feature.
Thanks for the great feedback!

RE: Rendering Challenge - Bathroom sink
Thanks Gaieus, I was also wondering about making photo-realistic images. Is the goal the closest to "real" as possible or to make it interesting to the viewer? I tried having someone in the scene because I wanted it to look more like real life. (I know it doesn't)
A lot of the images on this site are fantastic but there never seems to be any "life" in them. I would like to see some more emphasis on rendering an image like a well thought out photograph, with people/dogs/etc...
thanks for the help!

RE: Rendering Challenge - Bathroom sink
I tried a little different light setup, not great but I think a little better. I looked back at the other sink renders and most seem to be in the daylight.
Is daylight easier/harder to do than a night scene?

RE: Rendering Challenge - Bathroom sink
Darn everybody is still doing better than me! Oh well I am learning a lot.
KT - MLT for an 1.5 hours....

RE: Rendering Challenge - Bathroom sink
This is my first interior and I really don't know how to get the lighting right. (and the walls and the)
I found the young lady on the google warehouse. I can't take any credit for her.thanks again for the challenge!

RE: Rendering Challenge - Bathroom sink
There is no way I can compete with the last two renders so I cheated and added a diversion....and tried to add a story. I used Kerky with no clue about what I am doing....it seemed so simple in the brochure. (ha)
Trying to make a decent render shows how hard it actually is (well for me.)Thanks for the challenge!

RE: Some high quality 3D models... hope you will find usefull
Pretty cool! Amazing stuff! It looks better than real.
Would it be possible to do this level of quality render with other software?
I'm pretty new to rendering, has anybody done a rend-off between packages?

RE: Square tube ruby
Thanks, I tried the "extrude along path" and that seemed to work great!
Thanks everybody!

RE: Square tube ruby
Thanks! I want to draw a bunch of these (trying to come up with a new design) and I'm trying for the easy way out....

Square tube ruby
Hi I used the "pipe along path" ruby to make square tubes.
I want to design a few square tube truss bridges and I would like the tube to have the flat edge up and down no matter which way (direction) I draw a line. Right now the pipe along path places the edge of the tube up.
Is there another ruby for this somewhere? Am I doing it wrong....
thanks!

Thanks TIG! It worked perfectly!
Great service around here!

RE: Production ruby for watercolor images
Is this something that others would like? I have very limited ruby programing experience but I could look into it.
thanks!

Production ruby for watercolor images
Sorry if this has been developed or is a dumb idea....
I have been developing some bridge design concepts and what I would like to do is turn around production images faster. (A series of steps that get a reasonable image in a hurry)
I have been using the sk+kerky+photoshop route but the rendering times are long...
I liked some of the watercolor effects where you output multiple images from SK and then combine them in photoshop. Is there a way to export images using a ruby?
Meaning, open SK file, output current view images to a directory, with (I think this is what you need for the watercolor combine effect)
- color and texture
- line work no color
- line work w/ shadows
- kerky xml file (for extra fun)
Then I could do a quick render in kerky and combine them all in photoshop for a reasonable concept sketch.
What do you think? Can you recommend a better way?
thanks!

RE: Elevation points for construction
Hi, I tired the height.rb and it worked great. Is there a way to first set an elevation base and then check heights? (Instead of moving everything up 500', just set the datum as 500' and heights would be like 512'3 etc)
I would like to use this for checking elevations on my bridge designs.
thanks

RE: Bridge computer models
Thanks! I didn't know about the mask render in kerky but I will give that a try.
(what do you think of the modeling by the way? Bridge concepts always seem to be white now)
Updated: I tried the mask render in kerky and it gave a pretty good mask that I could use in photoshop to "cutout" my bridge and place it into a background photo. I will try the match photo in sketchup and then rendering in kerky. If that makes sense.
I would still be interested in web tutorials that show examples of adding models to real images. I am very new at making models and photos mix.(for shading help, making it look real, etc)
Update 2: Just a quick render and photomatch for the bridge shown above. I need shading, scale, etc and the angle might not be correct but I think I am on the right track..
Thanks for the help!

Bridge computer models
Hi I have been working with Sketchup and Kerkythea to develop bridge models for competitions and clients.
I need some help finding tutorials on placing computer models into landscape site photos. (I am an engineer and I don't have much training in that area, so some advice would be helpful. I would use Photoshop of course.)
Here is a model of a pedestrian bridge I concepted. The Crossbow bridge.
Here is a link to some other images on my Flickr page.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/acceleratedbridgeconstruction/This page of concepts for the Calgary bridge competition is what I would like to learn.
http://www.calgarymlc.ca/submissions/Is it something I learn by trial and error or is there some books/website that can help.
Thanks!
Stuart
