yeah, the thumbnails are already in there (though 128px maximum)

you can also have graphic converter switch all the icons for you so when you view them via finder, you'll see the thumbnails instead of the generic icon or the custom SU icon thing with the pin..

How do you do this? It is not clear from GC User Guide.

      Hi,
this plugin has a very different scope than what you need. File thumbnails work very differently and the approach of this plugin does not offer a solution for file thumbnails. This forum is full of discussions about thumbnails (ie. no thumbnails on Win64bit, small thumbnails on OS X), and many workarounds [1][2][3]. If you need a file to always the same thumbnail of the model from a specific perspective, you can make use of SketchUp's feature in "Model Info" to disable updating the thumbnail on save.

Many thanks for clarifying that for me. All understood now.

      Hi Aurelius,

I am not sure whether I am too late to post to this topic or whether my question has relativity, but one thing that annoys me in SU is the the inability for each file to bear an custom icon of the model rather than simply the SU generic icon. I have so many models that I can not remember them all by name and need unique images for each icon. Currently I use a slow process of taking a screen snapshot of the model then copy and pasting this into the File info.

Can your plugin be adapted to automate the process of adding a custom icon to the SU model files I keep on my machine?

      Carsten,

thank you so much for both the prompt response and the great advice. I am so pleased you have a great memory!! Obviously, a 'one-touch' plugin solution would be ideal, but this workflow is fantastic and a great help. You have saved us a lot of time and frustration!

    • Request for Plugin

      Hi all,

One thing we regularly want to do is to take a SketchUp model and convert it to a cut diagram for use by our CNC fabricators. I am yet to find a way to do this smoothly and quickly. Perhaps someone can suggest a solution, if one already exists.

There are a couple of cutlist plugins currently available, but these tend to only provide basic shapes rather than detailed shapes with, perhaps, holes and etchings therein.

I can't claim to understand even the basics of ruby scripts but I was hoping someone might be able to develop a plugin that takes a SU model and converts it to a cut layout that can be used by a fabricator. Ideally, the output would be in dwg or dxf format.

One would need to be able to enter info such as sheet dimensions and any cut margins. Also needed would be the ability to include cut depths. All items on the cutlist layout would be groups or components from within the SU drawing.

I would greatly appreciate any advice as to whether what we are seeking is possible and, if so, whether someone might be able to design the plugin for us. More than happy to pay a fee for this assistance.

      Hope someone can help.

      Cheers....Scotty

      Hi Jeff,

I have followed your advice regarding using Graphic Converter but my SU files still show the SU icon rather than a file preview. Has something changed in SU that prohibits GC from changing the icon image.

Hope you can shed some light.

John.....you vulture! Picking the meat from the bones.

I have to admit, I do like my iMac. It will be easier to leave the wife and kids than throw the iMac out. If only the iMac could cook and grumble incessantly I would never have needed the wife.

Dave, I'll be in Tibet and up in the mountains. Might be hard to get electricity and/or internet access. I'll have to go to one of the local MacDonalds. Bound to be a few of them up there!

Cheers for all the help guys.

      Dave / Steve / John,

thanks for the responses. Same message three different ways I think.

I use both Mac and Windows and, for some reason (stupidity, probably!), I thought that I used to be able to dock the toolbars on a Mac. Now have to admit that I have spent 472 hours trying to get them to dock in the same way as they do on a Windows machine.

If I can't dock the toolbars, I am throwing the iMac in the bin and, while I am at it, my iPhone and iPad are going too. In fact, I am leaving my wife and two young kids and going off to join a buddhist retreat in Tibet, waxing all my body hair and becoming a One Direction fan.

      Thanks for the help guys.

    • Can't dock toolbars in Mac OX

For some reason, since upgrading to Apple Mountain Lion, I have been unable to dock any plug-in toolbars to the top or side of the SketchUp workspace. I have just upgraded to SketchUp 2013 and I still have the same problem (thought it might go with new release).

Has anyone got a solution for this?

    • Apple moving into 3D Modelling?

The following is an interesting extract from the Patently Apple website.

Apple Receives a Granted Patent for a Possible Future iPhone 3D Modeling Application

Apple has received a Granted Patent for a product that has yet to surface. The patent titled "Generating a three-dimensional model using a portable electronic device recording" relates to systems and methods for navigating three-dimensional environments and viewing three-dimensional objects on an electronic device display such as the iPhone based on deterministic movement of the electronic device. This is also directed to systems and methods for recording a video of a three-dimensional environment or three-dimensional object, and processing the video to generate a three-dimensional model that could be navigated in an order other than that of the recording.

      http://www.patentlyapple.com/.a/6a0120a5580826970c017d3cec09a2970c-800wi

In some embodiments, a user could direct an electronic device such as an iPhone to display information that could be associated with three-dimensional navigation such as, for example, three-dimensional models of environments or objects. For example, a user could direct an electronic device to access a mapping application that provides images of what could be seen in some or any direction from a particular location. As another example, a user could direct an electronic device to display a video game in which a user may navigate a virtual world and see, in any direction, what the virtual world resembles (e.g., rendered images of the virtual world's appearance from any location in the virtual world). As still another example, a user could direct the electronic device to display a three-dimensional object (e.g., an object for sale) that the user could manipulate or view from different angles.

It almost sounds like it could be the next step for Apple's new iPhone 5 Panorama camera feature. Think of it as 3D Panorama.

In Fact, Apple's engineering team even used a similar graphic theme for this 3D App as shown below.

    • RE: Front and Back faces on the same face?!!!

      Dave,

thanks for the response. You are correct. The problem is hidden geometry. I had show hidden geometry on but, for some reason, SU was not showing it. I reloaded SU and problem was solved.

See,it would have been a waste of time uploading the model. You answered the question easily without it!!!! (Actually, it was too large).

      Many thanks for the help.

    • Front and Back faces on the same face?!!!

Not sure if I am going mad but I have downloaded a model from the 3D warehouse and, when trying to orient faces, have come across a number of faces which are both forward and reverse facing. By that, I mean that there is one face bounded by four edges and, within the face, part is looking forward and part backward despite the fact that there does not appear to be anything delineating a border between the two parts of the face. Trying to either reverse individual faces or using VBFR doesn't help as it merely results in the face still having two directions.

Any ideas? Am I going mad? Have I already gone mad?
