      Did you do this one?

It's okay, just not WOW. It could use a little more interesting gradiation of colour on the main surfaces; not only to add interest and complexity but also to suggest depth/perspective. For the same reason some foreground stuff and possibly midground stuff would go a long way to suggesting depth also.

This one can't so easily get away with the "simple" look because it really isn't all equally simple.

    • RE: Design a SketchUp Conceptual Course

What is volumetric exploration? In layman's English?

Geo location: done, Sun studies: done Essentials 1 and again in Advanced 1
Use of compoenents and groups: done: Essentials 2 class
Barcelona Pavillion, the very one as a matter of fact: Advanced 2 and how to use inferencing to build a 3D model from CAD plans.

I can't teach every thing in each of the 4 courses: ummm, that is why there are FOUR.

I was feeling like I was out to lunch somehow. Thank you for being confused right along with me.

    • Design a SketchUp Conceptual Course

Teaching tools is easy and understandable. While teaching the tools you also teach what makes SketchUp "conceptually" different from other applications.
But when people taking my course give me feedback that they would also like to take a SketchUp course that is more oriented to "conceptual architectural", I havne't a clue what they mean. To me, you cannot divorce the tools from the "concept" of how to use SketchUp so as far as I'm conerned, it's done. So I'm asking for your help. If you had to design a SketchUp course that was "conceptual architectural" what would you cover?

The very quick and dirty answer is to use the "follow-me" tool. Draw a flat profile of your moulding shape. Select the edges of a "path" around which your "profile" needs to follow ( or if the path is all the way around an enclosed shape such as the top of the box, you can just select the top surface which by definitiion means you have selected all of the bounding edges as the path), click on the follow-me tool and then clck on the positioned profile face and it will travel around the "path". Badap-bing bada-boom. Done!

    • RE: Maximum Render Size?

Before V5 I was exporting PNg & Epix at 9999 without any problems. Since V5 I have had problems saving such large files. I tried this particular file with the follwoing results>

      AA OFF JPG 9999 OKAY
      AA OFF PNG 9999 OKAY
      AA OFF EPIX 9999 OKAY
AA ON JPG 9999 RUNTIME ERROR
Triead again and got Runtime Error Again.

I think the complexity of the model has something to do with it as well. This is fairly simple and is not saving as a very large file. I beleive with a very large complex structure I would be less likely to save at 9999

    • RE: Sketchup prehistory

I'm still in touch with Jim as a private citizen. There is no one quite like him. He was a steady reassuring presence on the old SketchUp Forum and a prompt and thorough tech support guru. I miss him a lot. He was the anthropomorphic embodiment of SketchUp for me.

I started using SketchUp in version 2 as a basis for architetural illustrations. I had intended to do watercolours using manually drawn plan projections but realized it was insanity when inexpensive 3D modelling software was available. I wasn't going to touch AutoCAD and I searched for and found Design Workshop. It was free and I started with that. I was introduced to 3D concepts such as "snapping" and so on but Design Workshop drove me crazy. It was cumbersome and imprecise but it was on that forum that someone suggested that Design Workhop had fallen behind and there was theis new SketcHUp that was the future. In fact at one point John Bacus of the post previous to mine, appeared on that forum and defended SketchUp re some allegation and I contacted him. I was afraid that the 8 hour demo wasn't sufficient for me to run into some the problems that I had encountered with Design Workshop and I was mistrustful. He granted me an additional 8 hours. I was totally hooked. For me, the very best part was that I was able to print out my view on tiled sheets withy margins that allowed me to tape them together to transfer onto a large sheet of watercolor paper. I especially loved the feeling of the old forum. There really were some great intellects present and I learned so very much from those folks. We ended up with a Corner Bar where we all chatted about all manner of subjects and got to be "friends". Many of us met in person at 3D base camp. It was a giant "love-in" of geeks united. I loved it. Won't forget it. Won't forget the amazing camradery of the old forum and the feeling of being involved with SketchUp crew directly. They were a very involved group and we users all felt so much part of the organization that it was a very bitter pill to swallow when they became "corporatized" (is that a word?). Any way things move forward and evolve and change and we must acclimate. I still love Google SketchUp but there will always be a special place in my heart for those 4 special years of my life when I was part of a unique community.

    • RE: Help pick the right graphics card for SU

Actually, ATI always insisted that they had full open GL support but it wasnt't true. Many of us had artefacts, including me, when dealing with even hi end ATI cards, in 2001 2002 when I started using SketchUp. ATI support swore they had full open GL support and Jim Holman from SketchUp support remained firm that they did not. I purchased and Nvidia card at the time and all artefact problems cleared. It was explained to me by Jim that ATI only used a subset of open GL at the time, that was necessary for gaming but not everything that was required for 3D modelling applications. So if your ATI card worked for you in 1998 perhaps you just had a fortunate configuration at the time. But I can assure you that it did not work in mine and in many many others.

    • RE: Help pick the right graphics card for SU

The problem with the ATI cards was that they really didn't have the full functionality of open GL that 3D modelling applications require. I believe that that many (most) of the newere generation ATI cards are fine re Open GL. However, I don't know which ones may present a problem.

Isn't there a newer generation one that also has 256bit Memory ?

Thanks juju, while I think that may be the case I would prefer some specific confirmation. There are a bunch of Nvidia cards that DON"T work with SketchUp even though most do. So I just want to make sure before I commit.

Will it work passably? I am renting a new computer lab space and this is the card they have in their computers. I can deal with a few artefacts but if it crashes or won't infernect properly or won't show the highlighting on selecting, it won't do.
Does anyone have any experience with this card?

I do so much mousing that I developed a very bad case of golfer's elbow. I was in pain all the time. Fealt as though I had bumpmed the inside of my elbow and it was badly bruised. Pins and needles too. My fingers also began to feel clawlike.

This mouse saved my arm, my hand. I can rest my hand on this in a very open positon and very lightly. And of course, as indicated in the picture, there is no twist to the elbow. There is also a double click button so I never mis-time double clicks any more.

      Thanks Brad,
I will ask for more detail. I asked a number of questions in class but I was feeling more and more ignorant as though I didn't even know the right questions to ask so I assumed this "HIDE" in AutoCAD would instantly be recognized by AutoCAD users even though it didin't make any sense to me.
Will get back to you. Thanks again.
