Hi all,
In this case I wasn't sure if I should post in the plugins forum, because it is also a request or at least the hope to start some discussion about what is possible.
On the other hand it is a giveaway for everyone to play with - so here we are:Thanks to Rico Law's thread here http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=323&t=28931 I kept playing with patterns and found this very inspiring.
Please try for yourself with the attatched model and tell me what you think.
I made some kind of do-it-yourself 3d Op-Art painting. It is just an array of mirrored components to design your own artwork, Maybe you can use this for your interior scenes or whatever you like.
Follow the instructions in the model.Looking at other applications like protractor I think it is very challenging to perform things like this within SketchUp. I would find it very interesting to hear any ideas from the Ruby-masters on this.
Guess it is a bit tricky as I know how components work. I am a real fan of what Kito Raupp has invented here http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=c5b47789be78bbd6bf3b2807e2ebf1bf&prevstart=0 .
I believe there will be more interesting approaches turning up in the future. Anyone chiming in?greetings

Dale, I think the answer is no in most cases (please someone correct me If I am wrong, I am just a user). Compared to other render engines LU is unique, working very different. Although I know that many use LightUp to export to game engines.
Adam, I have not been to the LU gallery for long - some really great new renders you have there!

Since LightUp has the texture animation feature, I am enjoying the easy workflow when making walkthroughs with simulated video screens and monitors.
At some point at around fifty and more frames it is getting complex in Photoshop. Btw, any idea how to automate video to "film-texture"?
I also like this sort of "feedback workflow", I mean that you can make your own animated texture from LightUp`s exported image sequence movie......can't thank you enough for making LightUp, Adam!

Hrm, there is something strange going on. I've rendered back and forth getting differnt results each time. I have downloades the model (rendered fine) changed the colour (rendered wrong), set a pointlight (rendered fine), selected the geometry (rendered wrong), et cetera.
Maybe its time to search the Twilight forum and get help from there...

...wait a minute, is it not the "metal" texture in the model that might have confused you?
just changed the material and it renders fine as you see below.
(it says in the model text: "Here is an update of my sitting girl fully clothed in the metal texture.")
(haha, what does he or she mean by fully clothed anyway?)

Here the geometry renders fine with TWL.
(btw: thanks for the link, did'nt know these beauties were hanging around in warehouse)
Could be a Twilight thing though. It once or twice happened to me with tubes extruded from circles. I then used the weld vertices checkbox in TWL material editor to fix this (although I dont fully understand how and why this works).
As always, a screenshot would be nice to understand more...beste GrΓΌΓe

Of course the subdivide and smooth plugin would be your weapon of choice. If you don't want to buy it right away (btw: for sure you will not regret having this pluin) it is quite easy to draw the oven from an ellipse. Push-pull and duplicate upwards step by step while scaling the top to resize in every step. after after delete the surfaces inside and soften to finish.
(hope this is understandable, if not take a search for car modelling videos or alike)cheers

You can find the basic functions explained in one of the tutorial videos, "night scenes" for example.

The lighting tools in Piranesi are quite easy to understand by trial and error, too.
(first click for source, second click for target, parameters for intensity and source offset, after you can even tweak direction and angle)
Night scenes need a little more detail work on textures and reflections to look right.
Take a look at how contest winner Ecco Lau uses lighting here: http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=81&t=29823
Pay attention to how he paints glows, uses color contrast and applies higlights only patially to create depth.
(btw: there is no real difference between interior or exterior lighting in Piranesi since it performs more a calculation of "paint" rather than light calculation like other render applications.)If you could specify a little more what you are trying to achieve, maybe post an example or reference picture.

Pretty cool mirror balls you have there jo-ke. From my render in the previous post I remember that I had to increase the power of the spotlights extraordinarily to see the sparks on the surrounding walls...
...er, maybe you should have some surface to recieve the reflected beams in the picture...
or do you mean that the volume light does not work right? in that case try to enclose the entire room with a volume - if you have only one cone for the main beam it could'nt work.

Oli, good idea to use vignetting! maybe the vignette could fade to white, this would be more likely to happen with watercolour painting (just a suggestion).
David, thats a nice one!
I am doing night scenes very often and was never happy with FotoSketchers results on dark pictures.
Just found that the oil painting filter does a good job:

Thanks Marek, finger painting is what I suspected. A watercolor painting has sharp and and blurred details at the same time, this is what makes your picture look so realistic.
I tried to achieve this with the color blending of the bilateral filter in FS. This one is first watercolor and then median + bilateral. Warehouse model, just a few passes in Twilight.

Yes, Fotosketcher is superb! like davidh in his watercolour thread did, I get more realistic DWC results when rendering twice with FC.

Great Buildings is definitely a massive collection. More than half of the Buildings have drawings attached, unfortunately they are all very small, like the ones from my books.
So what, this is way more reference than I have ever expected to find, I will get a good overview - and when a drawing with more resolution can't be found on the web then hopefully I can purchase a book on that respective architect.thanks a lot Dale!
...and then there are even models available, didn't try them yet - guess they need a high dosis of Thomas' cleanup ruby
btw, what is a "blurb" Peter?
