Hello, some of my 2D imported plant components have now got black lines around them. These lines frame the components. They didn't have them showing originally, I can't work out if it is a bug, or if I have somehow changed a style or something. This happened in another model I'm working on, but the same project, so some parts of it I have imported from the other model. Any help gratefully accepted. I'm attaching a screen shot. Let me know if you need the file itself uploading.
Thanks, Sally

RE: My lines & dimensions are behind my model
Hi Andrew,
I already have SU 8, but as you may be able to tell, I am fairly new to using Layout. I hadn't used it in any previous versions, so I am not sure what the additions are, they're all I know!
thanks again, best rgds, Sally

RE: My lines & dimensions are behind my model
Hi guys!
thanks so much, I knew it had to be something simple! I'd moved from working on the default layer to another one, everything's fine now.

My lines & dimensions are behind my model
Hello,
I'be been happily using layout but suddenly the lines, dimensions and text I try to place ON my model seem to be behind it. I'm guessing it has something to do with "arrange" bring forward etc, but can't seem to stop it from happening. I don't know what I did to make it change like this?

RE: How do you open downloaded plugins in Sketchup?
Hi Gaieus,
problem solved, weird, but after downloading Fredoscale, shapes, parametric & mesh additions had disappeared from plug ins, I found them in the trash (although I didn't put them there!), when I dragged them back to plugins, lo and behold, I now have shapes in my draw menu! So they will keep me busy for a while.....

RE: Garden design, planting plans
Hi All,
thanks, I've found them!!! they are installed within the SU6 file (path HD, library, application support, GSU6, SU, components, landscape, ) that I didn't notice I had!!

RE: How do you open downloaded plugins in Sketchup?
Hi all,
thanks for taking the time to help me,
wind-borne, yes, found it, I was looking on my home path instead of HD path, found plug ins and found the 3 .rb scripts, however, I'm not getting them when I open SU. What am I doing wrong? Shapes doesn't appear in Draw, where I believe it should and the Ruby console box within Window is empty (?)

RE: How do you open downloaded plugins in Sketchup?
Hello Gaieus,
I've been trying to get some ruby scripts, (simple ones from the SU site, shapes, mesh-additions and parametric) , I've downloaded them, but can't seem to get them to load into SU. I've followed the link you suggested to smustard, followed the path they suggest for a mac, but I don't have a folder called plug ins within the sketchup folder, just autosave and old colours. I've put the ruby scripts in with them, but they do not appear when I reopen SU. Can you help please!! thanks, Sally

RE: Garden design, planting plans
Hi again Tig,
I've tried downloading v6 bonus pack, I can download it but it wont install, is this because I haven't got v6 SU installed? I'm intrigued to see what's in it.....
-
RE: Garden design, planting plans
Hi Tig,
I've worked out why I wasn't understanding you well, you use SU 6 and I use SU 7 and the bonus packs are in different places. I need to do some work to understand what you mean about reworking plants, I'll look at it in detail at the weekend, and thanks again for your help.
Hi Solo,
thanks to you too, I've looked at your site, your plants are great, are they to scale? What would interest me is a collection of very rough models in terms of round, pyramid, spiky etc forms and a choice of sizes, height and width, so I can get a quick view of how a planting composition works. I currently do it all by hand. It doesn't really matter to me if the plant looks realistic for this purpose.
I looked at some of your other stuff, those interiors look like photos, are they really models? Is that what rendering is? I have SO much to learn! I guess that's why I'm on the newbie forum!!

RE: Garden design, planting plans
Dear Tig, (that was the name of my first dog when I was 11!)
thanks for your reply, most of which I understand. I know I'm being dim, but I can't work out how to access/see the C:\Program Files\Google\Google SketchUp 7\Components\Landscape_Architecture_Bonus\Vegetation\ that you mention. I've tried searching for it on my computer and in sketchup & google components warehouse, but I can't find it.
So far I haven't found the plants from the warehouse too realistic, or the selection very varied, I've used some to give an illustration of planting, but not exact planting plans. What I'm hoping to be able to do is decide on a particular plant, type it in and get a scale model of it's size and form. I will play with your suggestion about 2d & 3d layers. I've looked at the tree example, that's exactly the kind of thing I want to do, is it a particular tree or just an example of a tree?
I seem to have romped ahead in some respects with sketch up but am still very basic on others! But now that I see what it can do, I loathe the idea of doing all my planting plans by hand!
Thanks again

Garden design, planting plans
Hello,
I'm using sketchup for my garden designing now, a wonderful tool! I'm wondering if anyone knows of any software, hopefully that works with sketchup, but stand alone if necessary, that enables you to plan planting schemes to scale in 2D plan view and then 3D views of the proposed plans showing final plant size and shape?
Thanks for any help, Sally

RE: Can you make layers retrospectively?
Thank you, all neatly layered and scened!! It's made a huge difference to how fast it runs.

Can you make layers retrospectively?
hello,
The next thing I really need to learn about is layers. I have created a couple of models (garden designs) and added loads of plants etc. I understand from a previous question I posted about instability issues that I should have used layers and scenes to keep the files organised. Can I do this retrospectively to these projects or do you have to do it from the start? Layers is tomorrow's focus for me, but I'd like to know if I should start again or can I rescue these designs? Thanks, Sally

SU video tutorials, problems watching them
Hello,
When I try to watch the SU tutorials, the first few work fine but then they keep pausing and sometimes take 30 seconds or more to restart, sometimes only for a few seconds before they pause again. Very irritating! I use a Mac and Safari, high speed broadband. I've tried looking at Utube help pages, lots of similar problems posted but I can't see any solutions. Any suggestions? Thanks, Sally

RE: Instability on Mac os x 10.6.2
Hi Tom,
Sorry, couldn't possibly swap, it's my new baby!!

RE: Instability on Mac os x 10.6.2
Hi Edson,
wow, thank you so much for all your advice. I have been wading through the sketch up tutorials, but haven't done the layering one yet. I've done a few models really to make sense of it and maybe I got a bit carried away without doing all the tutorials first. I'm very grateful for the other tips and sites you've given me though and I will be ordering those books this weekend!
Thanks again, Sally

RE: Instability on Mac os x 10.6.2
Hello Edson,
I've just seen your comments, I am new to sketch up and haven't learned about layers and scenes, so that may well be the problem! I will investigate. Thanks, Sally

RE: Instability on Mac os x 10.6.2
Hi Tom,
thanks for getting back to me, my Imac is 27inch and has a 2.66 GHz Intel Core i5 processor and 4 GB 1067 MHz DDr3 memory. I have 956.58GB of disk space available out of 999.86GB Would you say this is under spec'ed? (I'm not very technical!!) I don't normally have any other apps running at the same time, maybe safari if I'm using a tutorial .
The problems do seem to be when I've loaded plants into the designs, although a lot are simple 2d ones. I have always done my garden designs by hand but am now trying to learn a CAD system. I am trying Sketch up and wonder if I will get the pro version? Do you think this would be more stable? Are there better CAD programs out there?
Thanks Tom, Sally

Instability on Mac os x 10.6.2
Hello,
I'm using Sketch up version 7 (7.1.6859) (fairly new user but learning fast!!) on my I Mac and have problems with instability, It has crashed completely a couple of time and I get regular freezes which last sometimes about 20 seconds and sometimes up to a minute or so. If I have lots of components in the model (eg graphics of plants etc) it runs really slowly and flickers a lot when I zoom or pan. Zooming using the mouse or the zoom key is so slow it is almost impossible to use. This doesn't seem to happen when I have no downloaded graphics. It's all very frustrating!
I have looked at the forum and note that I am not alone, I've seen about the fixes but they all seem to relate to Mac OS x 10.5
Any help gratefully received, thanks, Sally
