Based off of the result image, it looks like a spotlight would work better than an omni light. Just have one spotlight pointing up and the other down. You can then control the light cone better to achieve the look you want.
Alternately if you know the manufacturer of the light fixture you could go online and see if they have a supplied IES file to get the nice scallop affect of the reference photo.

I might be wrong, but I believe you cannot use a linear surface for caustics. Caustics are a concentration of light due to a curved (lens) effect.

For a mirror, it's what material is applied to the surface that matters, not whether an object is a solid or a face. As far as the reflection/refraction scene settings, this was done many, many versions ago, and I don't know where the settings are currently found.
