    • Component with cut opening

I made simple window frame and opening, than made component out of it. It cuts window opening fine when I apply it to walls. So far so good. But when I applied to grouped walls, window will not cut. I had to explode the wall group, and reapplied the window component for the cut to work.

Changing out windows late in model building sequence is not going to be simple tasks. Am I right?

    • Shading problem

I was playing around with this texture I made today. When I shaded it with SU, white line shows at given angle. What’s going on here?

    • RE: How does one create a TIN model in sketchup?

TIN stands for Triangulated Irregular Network; 3D description of a surface using triangular polygons. There is good description here:

      http://www.ian-ko.com/resources/triangulated_irregular_network.htm

To make it, just put diagonal line on quad surface. Than the apex away from this diagonal line can be moved out of plane.

    • RE: Component Problems - Please Help!!!

The program will be used by people who have never used sketchup
      before

In many cases people who have never used given software needs some time to just learn how to use it. Resistance to learn new method can be a turn off. Have you considered other method? May be it is best to make a little model of each components so that one can assemble it like a Lego block. It will be totally intuitive and fun to play around with.

      Looking good!

SU seems to use lots of CPU crunching when it comes to displaying edges. I have been using C4D for some time. With that software if you are not careful, one can easily create over a million polygons; that’s 3 to 4 million edges! And it still display ok on my PC. What is going on with SU anyway?

    • RE: Printing in the right sizes?

I am afraid my printer doesn’t print 1 to 1 either. I don’t think SU software has the printer control to that degree. So whether one can print or not, it’s the function of your printer capability. I think. I know my CorelDraw is capable of driving my printer to print 1 to 1. SU can't.

    • RE: I Need Help With A Certain Kind Of Roof

I tried to do that by making the roof with hump on it. Than made my own texture to paint from satellite photo. But SU wants to paint individual surfaces independently! How do you apply / project single texture image on to multiple face?

    • RE: Global Axes?

Where can I find this gridline plugins? Station dimension are typically used to describe form of a ship, aircraft, or rockets. It is also used for mass analysis; Center of Gravity and such. So, all of the equipment and secondary objects on the vehicle end up with station value.

    • Surface Area function?

Is there a function to calculate surface area in SU? It’s nice to be able to calculate area for non rectangular room plan.

    • RE: 2D 3D

From a distance those profile lines will simply cover the whole face.

Ya, as the image shrinks they tend to go black. Bigger problem is 2D face me object are semitransparent. As in this image, shadow show through adding quite a bit of clutter. Is there a way to make it completely opaque?

in fact I am an archaeologist

Ok, so that is where your Avatar comes from. I am no archaeologist but one of my hobbies is flint knapping. I can now make halfway decent projectile point out of obsidian. One might think making Stone Age tool is simple, but it is no easy task to make a nice lethal point. You need right tool, right material, and right technique to make it.

    • Protractor snapping

How do you align your protractor to the axis you like to turn when none of the faces you have on the object is normal to that axis?

      http://www.designonme.com/sketchu/prot.gif

In this case, I am trying to rotate my object about red axis. But I can’t locate the protractor orientation properly, because protractor keeps snapping to one of the faces!

    • RE: Global Axes?

Reason I asked is that for may large scale vehicle or vessel engineering drawing describes it with the use of station or water line dimension measured from arbitrary point in space. Can SU place a station dimension on object if 3D objects were placed properly in space? Or do you need to fake it.
