Your geometry is very small, you should scale it up and use Flowify afterwards (or you can try FFD again).

Yeah... I have found that a lot of things don't work right when done on actual size models. If I scale them up 100x and do it again, most things work. It's a pain to have to do that every time I want to use offset or plugins like that. Either that or I have to leave it scaled up and remember to multiple my measurements as I model it.

Anyway... I finally got something to work last night. After trying everything everyone has suggested, I stumbled across the Sandbox > Drap Tool. After scaling the model up 100x, that worked perfectly! Thank you to everyone for all of your help!

PS If you use Flowify you must make a little trim stripe on your sphere for have a "4 sides" surface!

Since I did not understand that first part, I think I will try Flowify first. If that doesn't work, I'll try to figure out the diff πŸ˜„ Thanks

Sounds like you want it convex --curving to a sphere surface. You might look at Flowify plugin. There are tools to bend things but in all directions--that's tricky.

That does look promising. I will try that out. Thank you.

    • Is It Possible to Curve a Solid Object?

I have a web that I have designed and I need to warp this in such a way that... this is hard to explain... I need to curved as if it were wrapped around a bubble. I want the center to stay as flat as possible and then curve over with a 5mm drop. Is that possible? I have tried SketchyFFD, but not only does that produce more of a wavy edge, it also REALLY screws up the manifold-ness of the model beyond repair. I was able to fix the "wavy-edge" issue by doing a 4x4 matrix and then rotating the object 45Β° and dropped the four corners down. Now, the edge looks (near) perfectly round. But there are still a LOT of non-manifold areas that I can't fix.

Is there any way (preferably easy, but at this point I would take difficult) to do this without starting over from scratch? I was told by someone else that I'd have to draw the web on a curved surface and extrude that with Joint Push-Pull, but I'm not sure I could get that web to look as good drawing it on a curved surface.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

    • RE: Modeling Terrain in Sketchup 8 or 2014

Yes, I know that IE is the browser SU uses πŸ˜„

The IE version installed in Windows XP under VirtualBox is 8. I have tried to upgrade that to 9, but it wouldn't let me. I can't even run Windows Update because the browser is "out of date".

I would have thought that "current" version of IE for a 2014 program would equate to the version of IE that was current at the time that the program was released. I would further think that IE 8 would fill that requirement. No?

I have, yes, but for some reason, the window that pops up is blank white. I can enter my address and click the (empty) [Search] button, but since the window is blank, I can't get anywhere. I enabled 3d graphics in VirtualBox, but I think something is not working right with the hardware.

    • Modeling Terrain in Sketchup 8 or 2014

I am new to 3d printing and I was reading the book "3D Printing With Sketchup". In it, the author talks about modeling terrain using the Geo-Location tool in Sketchup. I run Ubuntu Linux on my computers. I have managed to get Sketchup 8 to run under wine and I have both 8 and 2014 running in VirtualBox under Windows XP. By adding the Sketchup.dat file to the 8 directory, the SU running under wine will open the Geo-Location site, albeit in the Firefox browser, so obviously that data isn't returned back to SU. Geo-Location doesn't work at all under VirtualBox I think because my graphics card isn't processing the OpenGL graphics correctly. I do not use Windows 7,8 or 10 nor do I have any desire to do so.

Long story short - I know, too late - is there any way that I can get the goe-location data into Sketchup manually, bypassing the built-in function? Thanks.

    • RE: Cartoon characters

Sorry for the delay... I've been sick. I will look at the link you all posted when I get a chance. And to answer your questions, Pete,I do not have any plugins. I am looking to melo like Tinkerbell and Betty Boop to make paper models. And my experience would be beginner... 😞

Can someone point me to a how-to or tutorial on how to create cartoon characters in Sketchup? I have Google searched, but I cannot find anything!
