Thank you, I do wish there was a simpler way to texture map, I did try to use the unfold tool but it didn't quite work, I'm guessing a plugin that would make texturing alot easier would be one that flattens the model, allows you to apply the texture and then a command that undoes the flatten but still keeps the texture. I have no idea what pelt mapping is.

      Thanks!

    • RE: Error while importing

If i decrease the polycount of the model it imports it fine, when I crank up the polycount (not by much) it keeps giving me this error, in other programs the mesh gets imported just fine, it's not a huge number of faces so I don't know why SU is doing this, it always stops at face 34600 like in the above picture.

I don't know exactly, Zbrush says it has 48.000 quads, how do I increase memory?

      <-- Captain of the boat.
Anyway, I don't know how complicated this might be to make, but I'm sure many, many people will be extremely grateful if this plugin sees daylight.

Is there another way I can import a huge model into SU while still keeping the texture?

      Thanks!

Thanks. The railway track from the first renders is a simple model from the warehouse, the stones are just textures.

I did have a problem with applying textures to rounded corners because projecting from either the front or the side distors the texture so what I did was project the texture onto the curved surface, went and turned off projection on every single face that makes up the curve and repositioned manually untill it fit, a tool that unwraps surfaces such as this into flat planes would of been a huge time saver, one more:

    • RE: OBJ import with texture?

I'm not familiar with the inner-workings of SU, what I understand from this is that there is no OBJ importer plug-in that carries the texture over with the mesh but technically it is possible?

      Thanks.

    • RE: OBJ import with texture?

Thanks for the reply, I did export the mesh/material/texture in one folder, all named accordingly then tried to import it using OBJ Importer and the texture doesn't get imported, to make sure I repeated the process with .3ds and it worked like a charm. Now you ask, why don't I use .3ds? ..well, because the model is 500,000+ polys so the only way I can import it in SU is via .obj format, is anyone more experienced able to shed some light on this matter? I'm sure I'm not the only one that wants this to work.

      Thanks!

    • OBJ import with texture?

I noticed the OBJ importer (atleast the one I'm using) isn't importing the texture, is there a way to enable this? I don't understand what's the point of importing something if the texture doesn't get carried along with the model.

      Thanks.

      Thank you all.
As a 2D artist I find texturing the same as doing any other artistical piece, now it's time to leave real clay modelling for 3D modelling and go all digital. I did another re-texture on the locomotive, tried to recreate a classic that's long been gone:http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/4052/da711.jpg

Now as I am more confortable with the program, I feel ready to tackle my concepts and transfer them to 3D, so hopefully when the time comes to post another image it will be something completely different, possibly this:

The amount of detail is absolutely stunning and I want to salute you as such a monstrous amount of work needed to complete this beautiful ship would of scared me. Congratulations for you effort to prove incredible things can come out of this program if used with passion and dedication. I'm scared to think what could top this.

Went back to refine this game model a bit, better textures, better geometry:

And what will this adjustment do? Decrease importing time? Also, what's the import limit, polycount wise?

    • RE: OBJ importer

I tried importing a model that's about 150.000 polys and it took about half an hour, 500.000 polys.. I shut it down after 1.5 hours, SU tends to lag quite a bit on my rig and I don't know why (4GB, E8600, 9600GT), are there other settings that I should look for other than enable hardware acceleration?

Thanks, testing it now, I noticed it takes quite a bit to import, is there a limit of how many polys you can import?

Howdy, is there a free, but most importantly, good OBJ importer? My search wielded only payware (I tried the trial version but it did a lousy job at importing, many many missing faces). Thanks!

    • RE: UV coords

Well, in V-Ray the dispalcement has a very weird result, you think subdividing the mesh will make the dispalcement work? Also, what is the max polycount per model that SU can handle, is it better to break up a large model into segments or import it as a hole?

    • RE: UV coords

The main reason I'm asking about the UV coords is because of the displacement map, have you tried to apply and render it?
