texture position grips size
sketchup pro 2024
when using the texture positioning tool sometimes but not always the blue grips
show so large they blot out the radial scale one need to see to position the texture.is there a way to set these grips to be the same size always?
see images to help explain what I am saying

RE: Updating model reference
That's a great idea Dave, after all these years of being just down the road from each other we really should meet. Let's put that on the short list maybe after it warms up

RE: Updating model reference
Thanks Dave as always you're a great help. I will try as you suggest.

RE: Updating model reference
HI Dave,
I have latest versions.I have up to 7 or 8 viewports usually and they all need to be hybrid.
I usually keep auto update off & lock the viewports that I don't need to update. Then manually update the views I need.
The pdf thing you mentioned may explain why when I opened a layout that I had not worked on in 5 months and went to create a pdf it locked up. Never finished. Always worked before.
So seems like I need to turn that pdf render option off if I am choosing to let layout do it? or I guess I could try leaving as raster and letting the pdf gizmo do it, but I have a sneaking suspicion I wont like the results.
I really need to be able to have a hybrid viewport update in a reasonable amount of time...
If I cant, I may have to break the chain and go to a separate cad file for floor plans & elevations which I have been trying to avoid.

Updating model reference
My use of layout has always been fairly simple. Insert rendered images and a fairly light weight model in floor plan view.
As of late I have been using layout with very large complicated models.
My computer is very robust and should not be considered the problem when thinking about this.
I use latest version of sketchup pro.question: I am wondering how long it should reasonably take for a model to update when I make changes and click on update model reference. It has always takes several minutes as I often times have Hybrid set for the inserted model view. But as of late it may take 20 or 30 minutes to update.
Is that off the charts? Should I be thinking that is normal or is something wrong?
I guess I maybe figured it out...Am I right in thinking that one should not use hybrid until you are completely done with changes? I switched to raster and it updates in a blink. I guess one needs to build in a large amount of time at the end of changes prior to creating a pdf set to allow the hybrid setting to do its thing....? I got to say though that waiting 30 to 60 minutes for a model to update, even in hybrid, just does not seem right. is it?

Do you make different LO files or just change the export quality?
I export 1 pdf from layout and then use adobe acrobat to save a copy as a reduced size pdf.

RE: Image size in layout
I actually do two sets of PDFs for my clients One is an email file size that is good for looking on computer screens and then I do one that has not been reduced in file size that they use for printing. And there is a distinct difference when printed from the email sized one and the full size version.

RE: Image size in layout
Like I said the difference is less noticeable because of what I had to do to get it to post. But if you zoom in you will see a difference look at the water in the two different images and the roof surfaces and I know it's not that big a deal but it is because I'm a freak.

RE: Image size in layout
I resized the larger one to the same physical size in layout and then created clipping mask of part of each and put them side by side and created a pdf.
same quality diff.my 225 res image is better quality.
The images both look kind of pixy and muddy because I had to reduce the quality of the pdf to get it down to forum size restrictions but you can still see the difference between the two. It is more noticeable in the original pdf.

RE: Image size in layout
I was not expecting you to answer the question. I just wanted to clarify what I was experiencing.
Thanks for you help just the same. The images are just side by side of a 72 res and a 225 res screen shot of the images not inserted in layout.

RE: Image size in layout
Hi Dave, I just wanted to follow up on this.
I could not articulate why I change the size of the image to 11x17 with a res of 225 at the time we were discussing this subject. I just have always done that because I had the idea that the quality of the image is better with a higher res and it fit my layout template perfectly. If I uncheck the resample box in photoshop and then change the size to 11" (the original rendered images come out sized at 53"x30" at 72 res) it will resize down and compress the pixels to 225 which improves the quality of the image.
If I check the resample box the image res stays at 72 while the size goes down to 11x17.
I ran a test in case I was fooling myself in believing the image was better. Because honestly I cant tell the difference unless I zoom way in.
So my question Still remains why this latest update changed the way layout handles the images when I insert.
here is the test I ran.

RE: Image size in layout
so, I see what your saying but I am looking for why it is different now in the latest layout.
these are the same image settings i have used forever and had an expected result in layout.why would the image be a different size in layout now when the image is the same in every way?
I dont get it.

Image size in layout
I have the latest version of SketchUp pro and layout.
I am seeing a different behavior when inserting .png images into layout in this latest version.
My work flow for years has been the following.
- render an image
- post process the image to adjust some color and lighting and to change the size of the image to 11x17 size.
- insert image into layout with an 11x17 size template that I have used for years.
When I would insert the image it would come in at 11x17 and I would resize it just a titch to give it a little relief.
Now in the latest version layout when I insert the same size image it comes in huge. like 4 or 5 times the size of the 11x17 paper.
Some global setting?
Thanks

RE: Importing text
@glenn at home said:
That's usually the 1st thing I filter out of a dwg before going into SU. Are you using them for a particular reason or just reference?
TIS FOR REFERENCE.
I can look at the cad file separately on one of my screens but I have always wished I could have the text right in the imported cad file on a separate layer so I can switch it off & on rather than turning my head...yeah, I know...lazy.Thanks TIG,
I figured you probably addressed this 100 or so years ago.p

Importing text
I have always just accepted the fact that Text does not import when I import an acad file (.dwg)
into sketchup.I never thought to ask you all if there is a way to get text to come along with the .dwg file .
Is there?

This has been mentioned elsewhere and is being looked into. It hasn't been determined which specific combination of OS and Graphic card have the issue.
The people I have read with the problem usually only need to adjust the trays slightly for them to work properly, annoying but not fatal.Hi Box, Do you know if this has been looked into yet and if there has been a decision on what to do about it.
I have just now finally decided to get 2023 set up and I am having the problems mentioned here plus other display issues. I wont go into specifics here, If there is no fix coming I will start a ticket.
Unusable for me in the current state.thanks
