    • RE: Vray for Sketchup - Materials

      Hi Scott,

I will try making materials today from my own images rather than the 3DS MAX ones.
Did you read the method I was using previously. Does it look right to you?
I am using MaterialStudio v01.00.07. Is this the version you are using?

      Hi chango70,

ASGvis have just completely revamped their website and I can't find any links relating to Material Studio.
As Scott seems to be having no problem with it I can't believe it has been "pulled" for some reason.
My problems seem to be down to my own user error.
I could upload it somewhere for you to download but I'm not sure if thats legal.
It is a free download from ASGvis but would they be upset about me doing this?
Can anyone enlighten me on this?

      Hi Scott,

Well, that means I must be doing something wrong.
I downloaded Material Studio. No documentation was supplied with it.
I assumed it was so straightforward to use, it didn't need any!

I have download materials from http://www.vray-materials.de/
These are for use with 3DS MAX.
All I did was to load the individual parts, diffuse image, bump map and displacement map, if provided, in to the appropriate slots in Material Studio. I clicked on Preview and everything looked fine. I then clicked on "Save as Package". However, when I try to import the .vismat file within SketchUp I just get the "Invalid file type" error.
I am using the latest version of SketchUp and Material Studio. The image textures are 1024px square.
Any ideas where I have gone wrong?
      Thanks.

    • RE: Insightful Article on Sarah Palin

      Hi,

      Just come across this thread.
Ron, as usual, there are those of a liberal/left persuasion who nearly always resort to these sort of tactics. Considering they nearly always think of themselves as your intellectual superior (they went to university, so they MUST be clever) they resort to methods similar to those used by primary school children.
They call you names and pass around insulting pictures of you. Really intellectual!

They are also quick to display their outrage when anyone dares to make jokes about certain ethnic minorities.
Of course, they see no contradiction in making insulting comments about your "kinsfolk". It seems perfectly acceptable for them to call you a redneck and imply that you are all inbreds. The hypocrisy of this seems to escape them.

I know that not all liberal/left types are like this.
From reading this, and past threads I know, for instance, that Peter probably holds completely opposite views to me (and you?) regarding most political issues.
But he treats other views with respect and is prepared to discuss in a polite and civilised manner.
In an ideal world, this is what all rational adults should do.

But it’s not an ideal world.
I suspect that Paris is more likely to be of the (more commonplace?) liberal/left type who wants "hate" laws passed. Rather than enter in to debate with you he could simply have you locked up and the key thrown away. What a nice liberal trait!

These people can be more dangerous than any religious zealot.

    • RE: Vray for Sketchup - Materials

      Hi,

I have dabbled with Vray but after discovering that there are very few materials supplied with the SketchUp version, I quickly became frustrated. I can't believe such an expensive piece of software expects the end user to scavange for, or have to create, nearly all their own materials. After seeing that there was quite a good selection of materials available for 3DS Max I downloaded the free Material Studio program from AGSvis to convert these for use with SketchUp. A good idea if it worked, but it doesn't. When you try to import these converted files you just keep getting the error message that it is an "Invalid file type". If anybody knows how to get this program to work correctly I would appreciate it. I accept, but doubt, that it is user error. Other users seem to have the same problem.
Even if it did work, I was still put off by the fact you can't actually view vray textures on your model in the viewport.
You can only see them when rendered. That seems like software that was released before it was fit for use.
A real shame, because good Vray renders look superb.

If I have got anything wrong here I am more than happy to stand corrected.

    • Am I being too optimistic with Sandbox?

      Hi,

I have attached a file which is a topographical layout I need to produce.
This is the result I have arrived at after quite a considerable cleanup and simplification.

I had hoped that I could use the sandbox tool "Draw from Contours".
It works to a degree, but leaves far too many ugly gaping holes.
Am I asking too much of this SketchUp tool?
Is there a way of "filling" these holes?

I have also attached a small image file showing the holes that appear.

    • RE: I Believe (to address the complaints of last week)

      Hi,

Ron belongs to that one minority that uniquely everyone is free to abuse and insult.
Old white men. (Sorry about the "old", Ron).

Also, not having politically correct liberal/left-wing views makes him fair game for a few more dismissive insults. (Racist, bigot, etc, etc).

His only "crime" was to indicate that he has no time for Islamists and does not want to see the spread and acceptance of that ideology as an "alternative" lifestyle. When he dares to express this view, he is lambasted with lecturing responses informing him of how evil Christianity is/has been. He is even accused of being likely to plant burning crosses in the gardens of those he disagrees with! This is so ironic. Reading the opposing points of view who regard themselves as tolerant, understanding and obviously of an intellectual superiority, you can almost sense them fighting to suppress their desire to gather a lynch mob to deal with this heretic.

As an atheist, I have no interest in defending any religion but to compare the two in today’s political climate is absurd.

I have a few Muslim acquaintances and most have expressed their distaste, in general, for the decadent West.
Most also felt that 9/11 was something America had coming to them as payback. I have tried pointing out to them the contradiction of their choice to live and work in the West whilst holding these views. That’s another story!

Whatever the rights and wrongs of the past, the fact remains that there is an on-going struggle for how we want the world to be. Islamists have a very clear view of how they want it to be. It is not a world I want.

To finish, it was also suggested that these people are only a tiny minority and that the vast majority simply want a normal life, like the rest of us. Those who express this view do not seem to understand that this is not some sort of life choice. This is a political and religious ideology that insists that the infidel be converted or killed. Ask any Hindu or Sikh as to whether they have been allowed to live side by side in peace.

Also, that tiny minority is not quite that tiny:

A BBC World Service poll about attitudes to al-Qaeda has found that a majority of Egyptians have a positive or mixed view of the Islamist militant network. When asked "overall would you say your feelings about al-Qaeda are positive, negative or mixed", some 60 per cent of Egyptians said they had either a positive or mixed view. Osama Bin Laden's organisation has a number of Egyptians in its top ranks, analysts said.

Meanwhile in Pakistan, where much of the battle against al-Qaeda is being fought, just 19 per cent said they had a negative view of al-Qaeda.

      Hi kwist,

Your example of choosing between Pepsi and Coke is spot on.

Like the main political parties, you are being offered something that seems all sweetness and light. You then discover that you are ingesting a sugary chemical drink that will rot your teeth and if enough is consumed will rot your insides!

    • RE: For crying out loud!

      Hi,

      Just a couple of observations...

I'm amazed that so many here actually want Obama to win just because of their intense dislike of "right-wing" politics. Actually, the present crowd are neo-cons which have very little in common with traditional conservative (with a small c) politics.

The point being made about how many "closet racists" who will not vote for Obama is laughable.
The amount of white left/liberals with a guilt complex who will vote for Obama just because of his skin colour must easily outnumber the closet racists by 10 to 1 at least.

The fact is, as in most western democracies, there isn't any real choice any more.
We are all just faced with choosing between political careerists.
Our politicians belong to either the red or the blue party mostly because of the career opportunities they thought were best available when they first entered politics as a career choice.
It's about time that people give up on this childish view of giving the "other lot" a chance.
The "other lot" are no different from the present lot.
I need an option of "none of the above" on our voting slips.

Finally, the illusion that Obama is a nice sweet liberal type as opposed to those nasty brutish war-mongers on the right in simply nonsense. One of his first moves when he got a whiff of actually being able to win this contest was to address the most influential political lobby in the US; AIPAC. Described as "OBAMA'S HARD LINE AT AIPAC", he told the group that he would do "everything" -- "and I mean everything" to stop Iran from getting a nuclear weapon. That chills me to the bone. By making such a reckless promise to the Jewish lobby he could quite easily ignite another world war.
Liberals who want to spread "democracy" around the world are every bit as dangerous as neo-cons who want to spread "capitalism" around the world.

For personal use (its free, but you have to register) I have MojoPac installed on a portable 250GB USB Hard Disk.
I use nearly all my applications on the move including Adobe Creative Suite and SketchUp.
Plug in to any host PC (providing it has a modern spec), log in, and away you go.
You use your own personal environment on the "guest" PC.
No files or any sign of your activity is left on the host PC when you log off.
It still has a few minor bugs but nothing that has really caused me any serious problems.

      Hi,

With Teamviewer you just tell the client to download a small file.
They don't even have to install it.
(You install the main Teamviewer program on your system).
Once downloaded, they just have to double-click it, tell you the code number and password it generates and you are connected. About as simple as you can get.

Maybe I haven't grasped the full extent of what you are trying to do, but...

Do you wish to have a normal phone conversation with someone whilst allowing them to view your screen on their machine?

If so, wouldn't a simple VPN solution work?
You make your phone call to your client then connect your computers via VPN
You talk and manipulate the screen whilst they watch whats happening at their end.

There are many VPN solutions, but for a free (not for commercial use) and easy to use one, visit:
