    • RE: Create hole (crack shape) on surface

@TIG : Thanx for the tip this is really helpfull. Btw, there's another question : i can cut the glass with no problem, but the frames consist group inside group (nested group structure). in pro version i can use 'solid' to solidify all frames blocks so later i can subtract with the crack volume, but what if in this case we use 'free' version. To be able to reach all the face to cut out , i have to go one by one of the group and do 'intersect' or other option is to explode everything to get the face level. Is this the right (fastest) way to do it? or maybe there's another better alternate way.

      Thanx

    • Create hole (crack shape) on surface

Hi, i create a model in sketchup (see attachment) and i want to create a crack/hole (simple crack shape) in one side of the model (see my other attachment). So what is the proper way to do it? i can't use solid tool coz the glass is just a 2d flat plane (not box). Does anyone got an idea ?

Yes, you can, so if you have problems, please post specific examples.

Here's simple setup, i create 2 rectangles, one is lying on ground plane (xy plane) while another is above the ground ( i moved it vertically along z axis). I tried to move any vertex of rectangle#1 to snap to any point of rectangle#2. How to do it ? Right now, it can't snap to other rectangle coz they're on different plane.

      Thanx

You are right it can't. That's because SU is trying to help by preventing you from warping your rectangle (see below). I guess the question is what are you trying to end up with in the model? You can obtain "inferences" from points on edges (e.g. endpoints) of the upper rectangle, if you are trying to align the lower point directly below it. You have to do that in a couple of steps (I can give if you need) but the easiest thing is to project edges down from the upper rectangle to the lower rectangle plane, so you can snap to the endpoints.

Generally the "snap" to point in this two-plane scenario would only make sense in reference to the camera position--if it worked, if I am understanding correctly. However if your objective is to warp the lower rectangle to a point outside its plane, you have to press command (alt on a PC) to "autofold" the face of the rectangle while moving the vertex.

Thanx Pbacot, That makes sense why i can't snap directly to it, yeah it will 'bend' the face. Btw I've just solved it using 'inferences' method like u said.
Additional note or request : it would be great if SU got option to turn this on/off , in same 'wild' case, maybe i need to build some free form design, this is also helpfull if i can have option to turn snap on/off , just for flexibility reason (so accomodate more users need). Right now the 'snap-persistent' mode make SU more 'mechanical/technical' but maybe that what the SU is designed for. πŸ˜„ peace...

      Thanx a lot.

Thanx Gai and Srx, problem solved. Btw, i got more question, when snapping between obj , how to force snap while the point/face is not co-plannar , i means they're on different plane, it only snap when they're on the same plane. Can i just snap to any point regardless they're position in 3d space ?

    • Snap fail

I got this model grabbed from 3d warehouse, this is a simple piece of street/road (i attach the skechup file). This is weird i can't even snap to any of its corner/vertex. Anything wrong with the model ? i have no problem in snapping to other normal model/object. What is wrong ?

      Thanx

    • Move vertex using absolute coordinate

Hi, i'm new to ruby. I'd like to know how to move vertex using absolute coordinate ? i used transform_by_vectors and transform_entities , they only provide relative transformation.

    • How to reset/modify the height of a vertex/point?

hi, here's my case : let say i have a multi segmented line (for example : a shape with 100 line segments). This is just a general shape , can be any shape. the shape is suppose to be on the floor /ground ( zero height or z value =0), but let say for some reason , some of the point or line has been altered or moved so they're not at ground level anymore and the z distance is very small (let say 1mm or less) so we can't tell the different until we do macro zoom. With this condition , the 'generate faces' command will fail to generate a surface for that closed shape. So i have to reset the height of all the vertex/point to make them all lying on the same flat plane (or ground plane in this case).

      My question are :

      1. how can we check if we got point/line that is not at ground level ( the z value is not 0) . Entity info only show the length data. Is it possible to alter the x,y,z data by entering numeric value of selected point/vertex?
      2. if we found the points or lines that are above the ground level, how do i reset them so the z value become 0. Do i have manually edit/move them one by one. Do we have a better or faster way ?

the goal is to make sure all the segments are on the same flat plane, so the generate face command won't fail.

      @dave r said:

TIG's covered the layer thing but your post also indicates you don't understand the Select tool as well as you could. A right to left selection selected the model because it only needs to cross part of it to select it. A left to right selection will only select those things which fall fully within the box.

Thanx Dave, i actually know the different of them both. The point is: i can use one method to pick hidden face while other method can't . if u you open the attachment , you'll see the problem. If you drag left-to -right , you will never pick up the face (while the layer is off), no matter how to try it. But let think this as imperfection or unpredictable result, since the layering without grouping tend to make something like this.

      @tig said:

So to recap - never layer 'raw' geometry like faces or edges - always group/componentize it, then layer that object as desired.

The only time you should think about using a layer other that 'Layer0 for any basic 'drawing-elements' is for things like Text, Dimensions, Guides etc, which you might want layering to control their visibility for various reasons - e.g. in certain scene-tabs or whilst doing certain kinds of modeling... because these are not dependent on other geometry etc then having them layered is 'safe'... πŸ€“

Thanx TIG, that's a good point, i acutally didn't think the layering workflow will be like that in sketchup. So i'm actually thinking it like other app ... i use autocad and modo where i can layer anything without any rule. In fact they're different πŸ˜„. What i want : i need to hide some of the object in my complex object , that obj in my attachment is a small part that i copy/paste just to reduce complexity, the actual model is a tunnel, with a lot of elements, so at some point when working with my model , i just want to turn on/off a specific element like , street lamp or grass or tunnel interior etc. So grouping is solving my problem.

      Thanx.

    • I can still select object while its layer is already off.

      SketchUp Version: 8

Hi , i got problem with sketchup layering, pls check my attachment , i create a model then set the layer to 'object' layer. Then i simply turn off the visibility of the layer.
I accidentally found out that if i click-drag a rectangle (from right - to left) to create a window selection, i can still select part of it, i can see the dotted area in the viewer. Btw this is not happening when
i select (window select) by drag from left to right. Why the face is still selectable while the layer visibility has been turned off. Anyone can explain ?

      Thanx.

    • Texture won't follow when moving object

      i got model from 3d warehouse :
      http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=521d0ac00b5dad904e008e7476a1e2d5&prevstart=0

i open this in sketchup 8 , problem is when try to scale the obj down , the texture won't follow. I check the texture map , the fixed pins are already off. To fix this, i go to texture/position menu , do nothing , just press enter to confirm, then now texture is following correctly while i move the face ..... but only for that face. How to do this for whole faces without manually do it one by one ? i'm confusing why this fixed pin didnt' work, is it a bug ? anyone got solution ? or anyone have any better workaround ?

      Thanx.
