As a hobbyist using SketchUp 2017 Make (according to your forum profile), the change in the subscription price has no impact on you anyway.
Dave, Thats the Point
where's the incentive for me to pay a sub? hmm? I see a total lack of development in the application other than minor bug fixes. The current pro app is basically the same as the Make 2017 version, and that only differed from the Pro version in that a couple of plugins were omitted and different export options. Something the community fixed...
but, I'm coming to realise, that SU is not my future for modeling now. Don't get me wrong, I love it... but I have to move to something more exacting for 3DPrinting. (an actual CAD solution).
but for quick sketching, I love SU.

I got that email too. The thing is I don't use the web browser, ipad app and all the other knobs and levers they offer.
I just use the OG app. I wish they had a standalone license or subscription without the junk.
this.
looking at the list, to me (I'll stress this strongly, TO ME), trhe following is useless.Web
mobile viewer
ipad
layout
3d warehouse

RE: Warehouse closing ?
"Agreed. So do you just go ahead and put your content out there and just expect these people are going to take your work and sell it for their own profit? "
History Lesson Begins
I have been there. I sold content for Poser (made in trueSpace 4, before I started using Sketchup) for about 4 years, 2003-2007 over on Renderosity under the name Khai in partnership with Sixus1.
and I saw, roughly, 5 grand of lost sales due to piracy on the sites of my models. now I could have chased them down.. and spent MORE than 5 grand doing it.
so what did I do? I moved on and made the next model. Pirates are gonna Pirate.
I eventually dropped out of the poser market (other reasons, not piracy) and got into modeling for myself again.
History Lesson over
point? it happens. you can try and stay ahead of it, and it'll just take a few minutes longer to do...
but the one thing I am getting from you dave is the feeling you wish I'd just shut up.
is there a problem here? I'm not setting out to annoy you, and I am pointing out a valid point but seriously, I'm getting the feeling you'd rather I leave.

The fact is, the change is being made to try to stop people who are downloading massive numbers of models from the 3D Warehouse and selling them on their own sites which is a violation of the terms of use. This won't affect users with Pro or Shop licenses. It won't affect pro users with Classic licenses. And what SketchUp user really needs to download more than 100 models a day from the 3D Warehouse? Or 1000 a month?
These aggragators stealing content off the 3D Warehouse to sell is the main reason I don't make any of my SketchUp models available there. The ones I have uploaded to the Warehouse are locked so no one else can download them.
and it won't stop them downloading en masse.
see, to access the warehouse, all you need is an email address..... so. they download the limit, log out, login next email address, download. rinse. repeat.
slowed them down for about... 1 minute. tops.

RE: How will the switch to subscription affect you?
It occurred to me.. Other than keeping up with the latest offerings for extentions... There is no need to upgrade. Heck I think there's no need to upgrade pas, what, 2016? (I think that's when we went 64bit. Happy to be corrected)
So Erm yeah. Given the last 3 or 4 "upgrades" have only offered bug fixes that should only be point releases and changes to Ruby.. With minimal (if any) feature additions.... Why wouldn't we go "no thanks" to being told to pay constantly?
Not seeing any compelling reason. I'm seeing software on life support from its users only...

RE: How will the switch to subscription affect you?
so balance what I posted above, if they worked on the following -
Proper / improved Import/export options
better handling of larger poly count models
UVmapping in Native
taking advantage of new display techok then I'd be paying a sub. but dashed lines, changing one word in the UI, minor point bug fixes and fascination with Layout, for me at this time is not cost effective...
-
RE: How will the switch to subscription affect you?
well for me
(and me alone. you have your opinion, I have mine. I respect yours, you better respect mine)
I'm out. sorry, I'm seeing too little development for too much cost, this was the year I was going to go Pro...
things that will probably get quoted at me?
cloud storage. don't use it, never will, useless.
sketchup for web? since I use a desktop, why would I use "for web"? useless.
VR Modeling? until we have proper tactile feedback... useless (plus the cost of setup!)
Layout? I'm a Modeler. never opened layout, no use for it at all. useless.so. for me, moving off my current version (2017/16 make) is not gonna work is it? they've not actually added anything that adds to my toolbox have they?
in actual fact I should get off my arse and learn blender... that I see a future for.

RE: [Plugin] Universal Importer - v1.2.6 - 30 July 2024
eh?
I'm importing mesh made in trueSpace... in Quads. also OBJs... again in Quads..not sure why your not getting Quads preserved...
the only thing I'm losing is Grouping... it all comes in as one mesh... which is a pain but I can work round it... getting the old tS models back is enough..
-
RE: [Plugin] Universal Importer - v1.2.6 - 30 July 2024
oh. not good.. since if you import a mesh in sections rather than in a hierachy, the way that SU places it in scene - you manually placing it instead of just in position - makes lining it all up again a nightmare if you've got large sets...
hmm no matter.... I can work round it...
-
RE: [Plugin] Universal Importer - v1.2.6 - 30 July 2024
for a future time, any chance of supporting grouping of imported meshes?
-
RE: [Plugin] Universal Importer - v1.2.6 - 30 July 2024
ok. Cob (caligari trueSpace) is a little shakey, but don't worry, I'm likely to be the only person to be using that....
OBJ so far is nice and solid, other than some scaling issues.. everythings coming in tiny but thats not a real issue...
thanks again!
-
RE: [Plugin] Universal Importer - v1.2.6 - 30 July 2024
thank you thank you thank you!!!
started to move my old trueSpace models from the archives to Sketchup...
just gotta work out a method tho... some of my models (well all of them) are multipart models that are to big to bring in as one mesh. problem is, splitting them down means having to line it all up again, unless I'm missing a key modifier for "paste in place"....

The Tshirt art scam, the revenge...
https://gizmodo.com/i-want-that-on-a-t-shirt-1840273177
to sum up... certain companies use Bots to trawl artsites for trigger phrases like I~~'d love that on a shirt~~ (attempt to mask so this don't end up on a shirt LOL) then Bingo. it's offered on a shirt.. and the artist gets bupka's...
so.. someone decided to weaponise the Bots against the owners
read the article to see LOL
on a serious note, please read the article and avoid the triggers if you can. this is a wholesale theft operation that it seems stores like Amazon are unable/unwilling to stop.

RE: Ferrari Models have been gone from 3D Warehouse
Ip Protection. if you don't defend your Copyrights, Trade-dresses, Trademarks, etc, you lose them...
sweeps like this are not that uncommon... look at Nintendo, the recent lego purges, etc..the licences for making a model of a car etc are quite expensive, (just as Revell, Airfix and the rest...)
