I've never heard of it either but I did a search and came up with this:

      http://www.ice-edge.com/home.php

I don't know if it's the same software as your boss mentioned but this looks like a very technical Autocad plugin for interior office design and manufacturing.

    • Indigo Render advice

I tried posting in the Indigo Sketchup forum but so far no replies. If there are any Skindigo users here I'd appreciate your advice.

I've tried Skindigo on small test files and it works ok but on larger files I get a crash more often than not. Attached is the error message on a recent 16MB file I tried. I've got Windows XP, 4Gb Ram and a core 2 duo E6850 processor so the spec is ok. Is there something wrong with the way I've set up my materials?

Thanks for the ideas but I've tried both scripts and neither works. Attached is an extract of the dashed line I'm talking about.

    • Convert dashed lines to regular lines

I know there is a dashed lines script to convert regular lines to dashed lines, but is there anything that does the opposite, i.e. convert dashed lines to regular lines?

I have a large site plan where I've imported the survey which defines the edge of the site with a dashed fence line. I'd like to avoid laboriously joining each line together piece by piece and instead be able to automatically extend each line so it joins to the next, with the ultimate aim of having an ubroken edge to the site so I can fill the face denoting the site area. If there isn't a script then how easy would it be to write one?

Eduardo, I have to ask how you got the commission? Designing a new train station would be a dream commission for many architects, yet you've been appointed with your "Architecture for Dummies book"! ๐Ÿ˜„

I tried the original model and it started loading but I got a run time error. I've got a pretty good spec too with 4GB Ram and a Core 2 duo E6850 processor.

    • RE: News from 3d Basecamp?

Thanks for the reply Ross. The positive intentions sound good, we'll just have to be patient as ever. They usually surprise us with a few great features when new versions do come out. I really hope as many people do, that handling of large models is addressed.

    • News from 3d Basecamp?

It sounds like everyone who went to the Basecamp had a great time judging by the reports so far. Apologies if I've missed any posts on this, but in terms of actual news, was there anything to report on forthcoming new features, possible version 7 timeframe etc?

    • RE: Cool software!!!

Andrew, be careful with Allways Sync. My memory is letting me down a bit but it was either Allways Sync or another similar programme Folder Share (I tried both) that some time back I I tried but I seem to remember it messed up SketchUp when I tried to syncronise components, materials and Ruby's in Sketchup programme files. I couldn't get Sketchup to work properly until I had uninstalled Allways Sync and reinstalled Sketchup.

Both programmes have also left 'placeholder' files all over my hard drive. The files don't interfere with anything and you can delete them but you have to do so individually so are a bit annoying to still have. If you find it now works ok let me know as I still think it is a good idea. I now have a portable hard drive that I use to syncronise everything but it has to be done manually and is never completely up to date.

    • RE: Setting up a scale of 1:20

To avoid the boxes being greyed out ensure you have on one of the pre-defined views obtained with the little 'house' icons at the top of the page. You would use the top view for a plan view for example. Secondly on the menu along the top ensure you click 'camera'then 'parallel projection'. You can't print to scale in perspective. It should work for you now.

    • RE: DWF File?

There's no direct way. What I've done in the past is to save it as a PDF then import the PDF into Illustrator and then export it as a DWG. You also have to rescale it when you import the DWG into Sketchup. It's a bit long winded but works well.

There are a few programmes that claims to convert DWF to DWG directly but I never got good results when I tried them.

    • RE: Design a SketchUp Conceptual Course

Susan, apologies if I'm teaching you to suck eggs here but I thought I would share my experience. I occasionally teach Sketchup and the way I proceed is to give a basic overview to start including the concept, tools and templates. Then I proceed in a task based way, the content of which depends on the audience. With architects/urban designers for example it would be creating a massing model, creating a simple house, creating a site plan then putting it all together. Under each heading a variety of tasks are covered which by default use all the tools but in a way that makes sense to the students rather than simply going through them by rote. By the end of the day students have actually finished a live project which mirrors their usual design approach but achieved with Sketchup.

It's not about teaching creativity but by basing it on a project, creative solutions are far easier to explain and problems requiring creative thinking inevitably appear.

    • RE: Request for Test Hardware SKP

If you want a demanding file try the following:
      http://www.mediamax.com/kennybkdy/Hosted/Sk%20large%20test%20file.zip

I recently bought a new PC with the following specs: Windows XP 32 bit, 4GB RAM, Intel E6850 duo core processor, nVidia 6800GTX 768MB graphics card, 500GB hard drive. It's pretty fast but I was still a bit disappointed with the performance with the above file although I'm probably expecting too much. I'd be interested in how others find it. For info I timed it with the following tasks:
      Opening (at scene 13): 32secs
Opening to being able to select a tool: 45secs
      Shadows on: 25secs
Position camera with shadows on: 22secs
Previous view after doing so: 25secs
Orbiting with shadows: Moves almost instantly, is shaded but not textured and bounding boxes only on top windows, doors and car wheels.

Let me know how you get on!

    • RE: Do you know what ?

      Hi Mike

I haven't done much posting in the SketchUp forum recently due to pressure of work and partly because it's now so successful that it's more impersonal than in the 'old days' with so many posts to sort through. I agree that this is a bit of a return to the early forum. I hope we're not becoming a bunch of cliquey old farts though! When I got version 1, I'm sure I posted some very dumb questions, it's just that everyone else did too as it was new for all of us. Anyway I hope to post a bit more so maybe the change is a good thing, I can now find another reason to procrastinate from doing work!

    • RE: Sketchup prehistory

I don't think it's too much to say that Sketchup has made my career in many ways. I now do everything in 3d and the quality that it can output has won me lots of jobs. This was from someone who tried Autocad and hated it so did everything by hand very laboriously. I then kept searching on the web like Mike and after trying out lots of 3d software (Archicad, Revit, Allplan, Softplan, Design Workshop...the list goes on!) I didn't find any of them worked intuitively.

One day I came across SketchUp version 1 and downloaded the trial and finally found found something that worked in a commonsense way but frustratingly was only licensed for purchase in the US at the time. I then nagged Tom Wyman at @last and they managed to licence me a copy in the UK and I haven't looked back. Whilst a lot of the original staff like Jim Holman and Tom have left I remain optimistic as those that are working on the software are still committed to improving it. I still keep an eye out for new software but so far, almost 7 years later I still haven't found anything that comes close to its speed and ease of use.

    • RE: Digital Camera

Have you made a decision yet? If it were me I would go for the TZ3. You might have just been unlucky with the samples but it is meant to have good build quality. The clincher for me would be the zoom range which should cater for most eventualities and in particular the wide angle. If you photograph buildings or street scenes you will realy appreciate this. Here is a link to the Panasonic cameras on DPReview, scroll down to the TZ3 and it has lots of user reviews as well as DP official review http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Panasonic/

Regards the Kodak and megapixels, from what I have read on the DPReview forums, increasing megapixels is very much a marketing scam. All that is happening is that too many megapixels are being crammed on the same small sensors resulting in noisey images as well as large file sizes. I have a 5 year old 5MP Pentax 6MP Ricoh and both print out great A3 size photos. Finally the only benefit of the FX12 over the TZ3 is the smaller size but it is only a 3x zoom and not a wide angle. If compact size is an issue, the new Panasonic FX33 does have a very small size and a wide angle.

      Good luck with the decision!

    • RE: Digital Camera

I have a Ricoh Caplio R4 and it's great for architecture with a wide angle 28mm lens but also goes up to 200mm or 7x zoom all in a very small pocketable size. It also starts almost instantly. Mine is about 2 years old and it's now up to the R7 model which has a few more refinements from my model including a slightly smaller size and better video. The R7 is just out but you can check user reviews of the R6 and older at http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Ricoh/
