RE: Tomb
sweet render... too dark on my work screen though!
how did you model those hieroglyphs? it looks very accurate! did you use the bitmap2mesh plugin?
i feel sorry for the guard though! -
RE: [Plugin] Random Select
@plot-paris said:
really a great script.
just in case you get bored, TIG some suggestions for a RandomSelect 2.0:- some sort of soft selection (selection of nearly 100% at the centre and 0% at the outer areas of a circle... or selection density gradually fading from one side to the other).
[attachment=0:1y6pbzy4]<!-- ia0 -->soft_selection.jpg<!-- ia0 -->[/attachment:1y6pbzy4]

or bitmap selection: load a bitmap file and use the grey values for selection density...
-
several selection sets out of one selection: you select all the entities and then, using the script, select only lets say 25% of them. now you transform/move/paint them. then you click the selection button again and get the next 25% of the initial selection... and then the next 25%... and finally the remaining 25%...
(at the moment I am using a hidden layer, moving the transformed entities to that layer after each step)
what do you think? usefull ideas?
apologies for bringing this 10+ year old thread back up! but i am in need of such a tool which plot paris has suggested. anyone got some ideas???

RE: [Plugin] Export 2d with Alpha
hi! since this has not been updated to work with the latest version of sketchup 2019, is there any other plugin that does a similar job?

... It's hard for anyone to cough up what Lumion asks... It should light a fire under Lumion, though. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw them adding more features and lowering the cost soon.
This is what I am really hoping for. As of now the rendering quality of lumion is far superior to that of TM. But as per the Official forum, TM currently utilizes Unreal Engine version 4.17. In the coming months hopefully the latest version of UE would be ported to TM. That means realtime raytracing and that is really going to up the game. So either lumion steps up and produce some really phenomenal features to justify its hefty price tag or they better go down the subscription route, the latter being which I believe they would be going for logically.

For larger projects we usually use SU in tandem with Revit. Sometimes I run both models, sometimes I am running the Su while someone else does the Revit. It is extra work but seems to work well with our style. I am able to work closely with the Architect on design decisions while the CD's are being generated. However most of the SU model is exterior and a few key interior areas.
The only things I might import into Revit from SU are signs or 3d text that is manipulated in SU. Those can be challenging in Revit while I can bang them out in SU in no time.
I have never used Layout.
Thanks Eric for the detailed info! Nice to hear about workflows from the other part of the globe!

RE: Some more of my work.
Hi Eric,
Really impressive modeling and designs. Does your firm use sketchup only till the conceptual/ schematic phase? Or do they go all out till construction detailing? Do you utilize layout for the drawings? Do you use revit as well? If yes, how do you transition from SU to Revit? Do you redo everything in Revit?
Thanks! -

I've had many a request for such a course and I think it would be a great idea. Unfortunately, my time is limited currently as I'm dealing with some health issues, but your idea is on my list.
I don't see any reason exteriors would be difficult for EEVEE. FWIW, I'm also playing around with Blender XR which is a VR addon to Blender which would let you walk around in you interior.
Chipp,
Thanks for replying. Sorry to hear about your health issues. Get well soon and hope you come roaring back with that exteriors tutorial!
Best wishes! -

The Dave Method (invented by Dave Richards, a constant presence on this forum) is a technique for intersecting shapes without problems. It gets around a SketchUp shortcoming: The program creates a hidden network of rectangles and triangles to create surfaces. But it also has a limit, and can't fill in those hidden shapes if they are too small, something like 0.1mm. However, components in SketchUp possess a property that gets around that size limitation: A change to one component produces the same change in every instance of that component.
So here's how the Dave Method uses that property of components to foil that shortcoming in SketchUp. Let's say you want to intersect two shapes to create a cabriole leg. Make the shapes a component, make a copy of the component, and scale the copy up 100x, 1000x, or even 10,000x. Perform the intersect command and erase the waste. That will produce a clean, solid shape with no microscopic voids. Delete the scaled-up copy. The original component will also be a clean, solid shape with no microscopic voids.
The Dave Method also works with the Follow Me tool. If you want to use Follow Me to create a shape, like an elaborate table leg with lots of small beads and coves, make the profile a component, scale it up, and use Follow Me on the big copy. If you only work on the original profile, the extruded shape will almost certainly have some missing faces.
Hope this helps.
Best,
dhPerfect! Thank you!

Anyone using Eyecad VR for Archviz?
I just recently came to know about this app. Looks cool. Italian based. The pro version costs 1500 Euros. So much cheaper than Lumion.
The new version seems to have an "updated Sketchup importer" and their website claims to have a "live link" coming soon for apps such as rhino, revit and sketchup..

I'm also interested, though my projects get into interior visualization as well. I think though that there were some issues mentioned in the course that indicated Evee is better suited for interiors. I'd like that explained. The course is worthwhile in itself, but I don't see its application to exteriors as yet. It might help you with blender 2.8 in general.
Thanks! This is what i gathered from reading the course outline! Hopefully Chipp would chip in regarding this!

RE: 20 Reasons for SketchUp artists to consider Blender
Hi Chipp..
Are you planning on releasing a 'Definitely EEVEE: Definitive Exteriors' course? Being an architect (who does not always indulge in interior design) I would like to do some quick exterior renders using blender and eevee (using HDRi etc). Or do you think it will be helpful if i get the 'Definitely EEVEE: Definitive Interiors' and apply the concepts for exteriors? (PS : I am not proficient in using blender and so that is why i am hoping for someone to guide me through the paces) -
RE: How would you model this?
Thanks guys. I will check it out. I will post here if I get it somewhat close enough.

How would you model this?
hi guys,
how would you approach modeling this?
I tried a couple of methods, but fell flat. Thanks!
