      Thanks guys,

Since most of what I do in SketchUp is mostly structural, and typically black and white, I would imagine Vector would be best. I believe raster files would maintain texture and color, or do I have those two mixed up?

I would like to know how to pick the difference between the two. I have not seen that option out of SketchUp. Would you be so kind as to enlighten me?

    • Logo and Design Development

Tried doing a search, and there is a lot of information on the subject, but I was hoping to narrow it down a bit, and get a straight answer.

I love using SketchUp for Logo development.

What is the best work flow for getting the best, highest resolution, and sharpest output once a model is created in SketchUp.

A step by step would be great.

      Anyone?

Does anyone know if there is a plugin for taking the time you have used on a model? I mean, how long did you use on any given model? Have searched, but i have not found anything so far.

Check with the invoicing program called Freshbooks. They have an add on program for timing work on your computer.

    • RE: Sketchup's Strategic Planning?

You might want to consider how 3D modeling in SketchUp, and their inclusion into Google Earth is tied directly to Google Places Pages. That might be an angle to search from.

Maps, local searches, and business information seem to be the direction it is all going. Not to mention mobile.

      Hi guys,

We've been using SketchUp at our engineering firm in the UK for a few years. We only really use it for very basic stuff.
We'd like to take some of the models we've made and animate a camera path to pan around the model. The plan is to export these animations as videos that will be shown on the product pages of our website.

Is it possible to export animations with SketchUp? Or should I export the drawings into something like 3D studio max and animate in there instead?

As a side note, if I wanted to outsource this type of work to someone, where would I look? We have a lot of drawings that need work on them + animations making and I don't have the time to do it.

      Thanks! πŸ˜„

I would be interested in helping you. Contact me, and we can talk. Thanks

Would like to know if there is any update to this plugin yet.

      Thanks

PS. Is there a mailing list or reader feed for the Ruby Library Depot, so I don't have to keep bumping this thread?

      Thanks

3D Studio Max costs US$3,495 -- Sketchup Pro costs $495.

If it isn't $3,000 better than Sketchup then they are being ripped off.

      Best,
      Jason.

Not to mention the open source ability to write more tools for SkecrhUp through the Ruby script language. SketchUp has evolved so much in just the last couple of years due to the above mentioned.

Not many programs can say that. It just continues to get better.

A few stand-outs are the ability to customize the toolbar, import PDF files (Sketchup), Greyscale and CYMK support, Drop shadows on fonts(Layout), custom kerning of text(Layout)... there's more too but conversely there is hardly anything that the PC has as an advantage.

Two other things really stand out -- a full install of Ruby comes standard on the Mac which you have to manually install on PC and OpenGL support is much more current on a Mac... both are very useful for Sketchup users.

      Best,
      Jason.

Holding out for SketchUp on Chrome OS. Sketching in the cloud baby!

The first 13 videos are a free preview, but the parts relevant to DC come later in the series (in chapters 5-12).

Nice stuff Jason. Adds are a bit annoying, and I can't watch them on my Cr-48 ChromeBook, because Chrome OS isn't doing flash or Quicktime yet, so I am stuck at my desktop to watch. $30.00 a month is a bit much for getting instructions. Any other format available?

As one of the fortunate ones to be a part of the Chrome OS beta, using Google's supplied ChromeBook, I'm with you in a big way.

Put something together, and I would be happy to test things out for you.

I need Google Earth, SketchUp, and PhotoShop in the cloud, and I'm blowing windows off of my desktop!!

Let me know if you need to connect up with others testing the CR-48 and Chrome OS also. I moderate on a couple of forums, so I know a few folks there.

Exactly -- although by the end of my look at DC's it does get a little heady, but its a gradual buildup of information.

The series is already long done -- it's in the hands of my editor now so it should be out in a week or so... but I'm already onto a new series.

      Best,
      Jason.

That's great news Jason. Can't wait to see what you have created. I'm ready to learn!!

Some really good videos to get you up to speed -- you might have to watch them more than once as they cover alot of ground

I also have a video series coming out shortly that spends several hours on the basics (and not so basics) of Dynamic Components, but it's not out yet... unfortunately it is a bit hard to find good information on -- but like most things once you get into working with them it will be easier to understand what others are doing in their DC's.

      Good luck!

      Best,
      Jason.

      Best,
      Jason.

Great stuff. Sure appreciate running across this information. The only thing I believe was missing in the videos, was that there were a couple of moves just within going from one area of the attributes screen to another without any explanation, and a couple of click moves not explained. Like when he mentioned referencing another attribute, and just clicked on it to place it. If I hadn't read that somewhere else I would have had no idea what he did.

I hope your videos will go more into the formulas and what they mean, and how they work. Kind of a dummy's version of DC creation is what need! LOL!

Actually DC are really quite useful in lots of ways but most of all for animation -- if we could export the animations as such it could be a very useful tool.

I'm also a big fan of the randomizeability of DC, which I definitely think could be more explored.

I have some video tutorials coming out soon that cover alot of the DC basics (a couple hours worth) as well as a large section on Layout... but they are not out yet.

      Best,
      Jason.

      Thanks Jason,

I would be interested in seeing what you come up with. Please sent anything you complete, and I would be happy to beta test it for you. erhart.jackb@gmail.com Thanks

And thanks to everyone else that posted their opinion. I was hoping to find out there were others interested in moving the DC concept forward.

I wanted to post this question here on this forum, because I'm only finding outdated material and videos with any kind of instruction about DC's.

Can anyone please direct me to a good resource for learning the language of how to develop DC's from start to finish?

      Appreciate the help folks.
