Maybe using something like autohotkey, I already use it to map some mouse functions to keyboard, here is a example of a full keyboard:

You could use X-mouse button https://www.highrez.co.uk/downloads/XMouseButtonControl.htm
or autohotkey to achieve this, the first are easier to use, in both you can configure this behavior by application so it won´t interfere with other programs.
I use a autohotkey script and have a friend that prefer X-mouse.

There is opinions that limit more than tools, when I see those kind of attitude I think it is just sad. Fortunately by my experience there is not many professionals losing their time this way.

edit:, sorry if I seems hash to you, I am meaning just to those blender people you´re refering, 😉

If you´re searching for a free option you can use blender, this tutorial can help bake the texture from the hi poly model to the simplified one, as a advantage you can even break down some parts of your model and set the texture quality accordingly in that part.

So all existing plugins must be adapted again ❓

Only if they used binary libraries. Most will work as is.
I had two which needed updating; TT_Lib and Vertex Tools. Compatible versions are on PluginStore and ExtensionWarehouse.

I've set X for my shortcut to Delete, still inside vertex tools it doesn't work, only the delete key delete a vertex, even if I remove it from my shortcut list and keep only the X key to delete

edit: I got it now, inside vertex tools it is called erase not delete,

any chance "loop cut and slide" is possible? There's add loop in Quadface Tools, but specifying where within the quad the loop goes would be HUGE! Anyhow, just dreaming 😄

      Can you elaborate more? "slide"?
You mean like a insert loop by offset from reference edge?

It's a Blender command. It allows you to place a loop by percentage distance between adjacent loops. Offset by distance from edge would be nice too 😄

Yes, it would be very usefull.

Just my personal experience, I´m using blender for about 3 years, for some reasons I had to use the 32bits version since last year. Doen´t notice any difference besides simulations and rendering, I end up outsourcing those to my home laptop, there is no difference in the viewport performance between 32 or x64, I can work with projects ranging from 100 to 300Mb with no problems.

I suppose you haven't read the entire thread... 😐
As far as I've seen so far, no-one is claiming that 64bit will make SU run any faster...
The primary reason users want to see a 64bit version is the use of i.e. 3rd party integrated render applications, where SU - being 32bit - is the culprit because of the RAM limitation...
But it's also a request to make SU compatible with future computer systems as well as a hope that it will be able to handle high poly models better than what it can today...

Yes you right it is not just about the viewport, it´s almost heartbreaking to see so many incredible plugins that are exclusive to SU to be locked in a single thread x32 enviroment.
Besides, blender viewport is high selective of what is shown, for example, by default you won´t see any edges until you enter edit mode for a specific object, much of the modifiers values that should increase drastically RAM usage are only computed at render time, and you can also set different display modes for some part of your model, like wireframe or bounding box, you don´t loose any functionality by doing this because it automatically switch back to the complete style when you enter edit mode for that object.
It´s a good idea for managing large scenes but you loose the view of the whole, GPU renderers should be making up for this.

On windows it´s happening to me every time the scenes window is left open from another session, when opening any skp file it crash, i have to open sketchup alone and close the scenes. I think it have something to the scenes thumbnails. I would like there was a general preference to effectively disable all scenes thumbnails, even to files that are not mine.
