    • V-Ray Next For Sketchup Release Date?

Now that V-Ray Next is out for 3DS Max and Maya, just wondering if anyone has seen or heard anything related to a date we're expecting to see Next for Sketchup?

I have a budget for an end of the year rendering machine build. I use GPU rendering most of the time, but I need Material ID on a very regular basis, and that requires CPU rendering. So I'm looking at diverting dollars from GPU power to a CPU with multiple cores to handle the CPU rendering. If I buy this thing and then Next comes out and happens to let you render Material ID in GPU mode, I'd kick myself.

Just curious if anyone has any news. Thanks!

    • Occlusion Map Location

I'm guessing this is easy and I'm just missing it. When downloading PBR quality materials that come with all the different maps (Diffuse, Normal, Displacement, etc...), many of them come with a black and white Occlusion map. Where does this map go in VRay for Sketchup 3.6? Searching just landed me on tutorials about using ExtraTex in Render Elements to do Ambient Occlusion, but I'm guessing that's for a whole scene, and not for handling the OCC map for just one specific material. Thanks!

    • Import and Pull a Curvy Logo

I would like to import a curvy logo into sketchup and be able to pull it to give it dimension. The closest I've been able to do so far is export an EPS as a DXF in Illustrator. This works, but you can see in my image that even with Smooth Normals and Soften Coplanar turned up, the result is pretty choppy. Is there a more effective way to bring this in so that it maintains it's smooth curves?

    • Material ID Shows Up All Black

I'm trying to use Material ID so that I can easily select portions of my rendering for cropping/photoshopping purposes. I'm using VRay 3.6 with Sketchup 18.

Under each material, in Material Options > ID Color, I have a different bright color (blues, purples, yellows, etc...). Under Render Elements, I have Material ID included, along with Denoiser.

But when my render finishes and I select MaterialID from the dropdown menu, that version is just straight black. Am I doing something incorrect? Selecting Denoiser from the dropdown shows the attached just fine, but only black for Material ID.

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

    • Sketchup GPU Acceleration Not Working

Here are the specs: Windows 10, Sketchup 2017, V-Ray 3.40.03, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 running newest driver (384.94).

If I render on Interactive with no GPU, it works great. If I render on Progressive with no GPU, it works great. If I render either way with GPU enabled, I get one of two results: 1) The frame buffer just freezes and never updates or 2) Sketchup crashes and gives me the bug splat message.

I ran the new V-Ray benchmark application and both CPU and GPU finished it just fine. Of course, GPU did it much faster, which is why I'd like to get this fixed. Under Extensions > V-Ray > Tools > GPU Device Selection, my GPU is selected. I even unchecked it, rechecked it, hit Set Devices and it gave me confirmation, saying "The change will take effect the next time the V-Ray RT render server runs". But keeps giving the same result.

The graphics card works just fine running any game on my desktop, so I know it's working.

Any ideas how to get this working in V-Ray for Sketchup?

    • RE: HDRI & Scene Newbie

Gotcha. That certainly helps. So in the example of my picture, is there a way to position HDRI other than rotate it around? I'd like the same effect, where it's floor to ceiling windows. But seems no matter what I do, to get an angle like above, I catch a huge chunk of the ground before it hits the HDRI image on the horizon. I tried elevating my room but that didn't seem to help (see my image). How would you go about getting the effect in my first post from a positioning standpoint? Thanks for the help.

    • RE: HDRI & Scene Newbie

lol, that's not my render. That's just a photo. What I'm saying is, I need to know how to do something similar. Not only have the light of the city scene, but actually have that city scene outside the window like that.

    • HDRI & Scene Newbie

I am a newbie to HDRI lighting. What I need is to render a lot of interior office furniture scenes. And I need them to have HDRI lighting, with the scene outside the window to match. See the attachment as an example.

I see lots of HDRI lighting tutorials, but not a whole heck of a lot on how to put a realistic scene to match. But again, I'm a newbie, so hopefully you guys can point me in the right direction of tutorials, videos, or general tips. Thank you!

    • VRay 3: Understanding the sun

So I'm taking a vray tutorial largely done in 3DSMax, where they keep inserting a sun and placing it wherever they want. I'm demoing the new VRay for Sketchup 3, and am having a bit of an issue wrapping my head around how the sun works. Hoping someone can either explain, or point me in the right direction...

I've got "SunLight" it my Light List in the V-Ray Asset Editor
I've got GI (skylight) and Background in my Environment rollout
I've got my Shadows toolbar with Time and Date settings

      1. If I turn all 3 off I get pitch black
      2. If I turn on SunLight, I get light
      3. If I turn off SunLight, and turn on GI, I get different light

So which one is actually the sun, or is it a combination of the two? And does changing the Time/Date in shadows affect the light from the "SunLight" light, or the GI light?

Sorry, I'm a newbie. Thanks for the help.

    • Bright Yellow Default Settings in Vray for SketchUp

I'm clicking the Load Defaults button, and only making one change. That change is to click the "Override Materials" checkbox in the Global Switches. But when I render my scene, with shadows set to today's date and noon as the time, it renders as totally yellow. Like, really yellow. If I go into Environment, I don't see anything with a yellow color. Any idea why this would be?

    • Realistic Persepective Help

So here's the concept: Print a large backdrop of a scene of an office, with a table in the foreground center. Then have a small section of a real table butted up against the screen so that it looks like the table and the screen are in the same perspective, basically giving the illusion that the table is a 3D protrusion from the screen. I've attached a couple pics showing how far we've gotten.

I realize that the perspective will only work from one spot, and one height. That's okay. We have a very controlled place we're using it, so we'll be able to guide the viewer to the right spot. But as we started tweaking and playing and trying to get to right perspective, I quickly realized that I had never even heard of Field of View in SketchUp. So we started messing with that, which quickly led me to think "before I spend hours making a mess of this, maybe Field of View isn't the only perspective-effecting tool that I know nothing about in SU. Let's ask the experts for some pointers."

So if there are any general tips for achieving perspective in an application like this that you'd like to share, I'm all ears. After this hurdle, the goal will be to render in VRay, plot and make sure all lines up before sending to a printer. But that's a challenge for another day. Realistic perspective is the first goal.

      Thanks!
