    • RE: A List of Shortcuts?

      Here's a txt version of the "Introductory SketchUp Notes" I provide my students - these are the "default" shortcuts - you can easily change them to be whatever you want - there's also some additional information listed here as well - maybe this will help (& I hope I'm not infringing on any copyright laws by posting this):

      start

      To change units to decimal:
      Window --> Model Info --> Units --> Format --> Decimal --> (close the dialog box)

      To show toolbars:
      View --> Toolbars --> Getting Started
      View --> Toolbars --> Large Tool Set
      View --> Toolbars --> Views

      Note:
      Status Bar – the long gray rectangular area at the bottom of the drawing area
      Value Control Box – located on the right side of the status bar
      Must press Enter to have a value accepted

      Default Shortcuts:
      T = Tools --> Tape measure
      Space bar = Tools --> Select
      S = Tools --> Scale
      Q = Tools --> Rotate
      P = Tools --> Push/Pull
      B = Tools --> Paint Bucket
      F = Tools --> Offset
      M = Tools --> Move
      E = Tools --> Eraser
      CTRL + Z = Edit --> Undo
      CTRL + T = Edit --> Select None
      CTRL + A = Edit --> Select All
      CTRL + Y = Edit --> Redo
      CTRL + V = Edit --> Paste
      G = Edit --> Make Component
      Delete key = Edit --> Delete
      CTRL + X = Edit --> Cut
      CTRL + C = Edit --> Copy
      R = Draw --> Rectangle
      L = Draw --> Line
      C = Draw --> Circle
      A = Draw --> Arc
      Z = Camera --> Zoom
      H = Camera --> Pan
      O = Camera --> Orbit

      end

      After you switch you'll be 100% glad you did.

      Thanks, that's very helpful.

      Is there a compilation of "shortcuts" or "tips & tricks" that I should be reading?

      Thank you again,

    • Aligning the Protractor & Other Tools

      Hello,

      In the illustration below (I took this image when working in underwater mode) I would like to rotate the "U" shaped object so it would be "flat" or in the original XY plane. I can't figure out what to do to make the protractor line up with the correct axis so I can do this. I've tried using the axes tool, and everything else I know of.

      As I select the objects to be rotated then select the Rotate tool, I can move the protractor along the blue axis (see bottom illustration) but as I get it close to point "C", the protractor flips and is no longer in alignment with the objects I want to rotate.

      So, do I just get into the habit of selecting the rotational point "away" from the object? When I do this it seems to work okay, but I've never used a CAD program that did this.

      Thanks,

      Brad

      BTW, my User Name comes form the green toaster that I drive - a green Honda Element

      Just something I scratched out this evening . . . that mirror function is great. I would have put this in the rendering section but I didn't want to clutter the "real" projects that are on display there.

      Happy Sketching,

    • RE: 1st Car - Need Help w/Mirror

      Well, nobody told me SU was addictive!

      There are so many things to model - to design! This is embarrassing, but my degree is in Industrial Design - ironic because I really don't consider myself a "creative" person. But, it's all about fun because my income - fortunately - doesn't depend on how creative I am.

      Thanks everyone for the help - very much appreciated.

      Dave R, link to the mirror dovetail box video was great - I learned some very helpful info, which makes me realize even more how cool this software really is.

      Is there a thread where we can post "stuff that's not architecture?"

      And yeah, I know the effects added to this image are really cheezee (sp?).

      Thanks & happy sketching,

      LOL - you guys are funny! No, no, no, I don't need "a mirror", I need to know how to mirror objects. Like, for example, the four curves for the headlight - how do I mirror those from the right side of the car to the left side?

      Danke,

      GT

    • 1st Car - Need Help w/Mirror

      This is a very quick, crude model but I am having a wee bit of difficulty w/mirror. I'd also like to be able to quickly change the coordinates WHILE in the middle of copying, rotating, placing a circle, et cetera.

      Newbies are such a drag . . . hope you like the car . . .

      Thanks,

      GT

    • Eliminating the Background?

      Hello,

      I would like to be able to print out orthographic views with dimensions (I'm doing this now, but the background provides visual clutter). I'd like to be able to eliminate the background - no sky, no horizon, et cetera.

      Is there a way to do this?

      Thanks,

      GT

    • Newbie Introduction

      Hello,

      I teach Engineering Drawing classes to high school students. I stumbled upon SketchUp several months ago but just recently began using it. I really like the software and when I ask my students if they'd rather go back to AutoCAD, none of them want to go back (ha).

      I've created two projects: a cube & a birdhouse. If anyone wants me to post them I will be glad to do so (they're in MS Word format).

      I just began using Sketchy Physics last night - came up with a file which was great fun (see attachment). During the last twenty years I've taught 13 different CAD programs & I've used even more than that. SketchUp is really awesome!

      Thanks,

      GT
