Pete,
It's amazing what you can pull out of SU. Nice work!
I totally concur re the hope for better organic modelling.

POLL: Background color forums and topics
Coen,
Since you asked...
When I logged in this afternoon the opening layout seemed a little stark to me. A little too much blue in the subject headings for my taste. I'd vote for slightly increased use of colors in earth tones... browns, beiges, tans, umbers. Perhaps more of a very light parchment color for the background rather than the bright white.
My 2 cents.

Thanks Mateo. I hope someday to be able to produce work that approaches the professional quality of the work that you and others have been sharing. Fred

RE: Fred Bartels is famous
Just a little story about this. I was totally surprised when someone on the forum (I can't remember who) sent me an email about the little blurb. I wasn't actively using SCF at the time and would have missed the item as I'm not a member of AIA and don't know anyone who is. I was, as you can imagine, pleased to have the shout out until AIA later published these comments from readers.

These left me feeling quite... how shall I put it... small, silly and put down. The ironic thing is I was in effect an innocent bystander. No one from AIA ever contacted me to ask if they could use the picture, and they certainly didn't mention that when publishing the criticisms.
My take away. Beware of fame... even the 15 minute kind.

Happy Birthday fbartels (Fred Bartels)
Ahhh, how nice. Thanks James. Much appreciated. I've become quite attached to this virtual community from which I'm learning so much. With a warm fuzzy feeling.

RE: Just a few cubes...
These are great. Really expressive and evocative. I like the way you are using shadows to provide depth and a bit of mystery... and that spiral shower "stall" sure likes it would provide incentive to stay thin. Please keep sharing.

RE: Renders from a uni project
Those are really beautiful. Quite different from anything else I've seen here. Fred

RE: Spiral Through a Golden Rectangle
A little visual spiral riff inspired by that beautiful golden mean curve model of Dave's.

RE: My First Robot - GOSH, I Love This Stuff!!!
Brad,
Looks like fun. I like the little guy. Kinda reminds me of Bryce. Maybe he could replace Bryce in the next version.

RE: So what's in 6.4.112?
Well all of us running OS X 10.4.11 can upload to the 3d-warehouse again. That's a much appreciated fix. The new look of the 3d warehouse is nice too!
I love this program. It has become a big part of my life. I suspect most of the people on this forum feel the same way. Reading through the "Anti-SketchUp! Snobbery" thread would certainly seem to indicate this is the case.
Google SketchUp folks, I hope you just keep focused on making a truly great program even better!
Thanks,

RE: Abstract Expressionist House 3
Following are five images of the completed AEH 3. I went a little bigger with this version. I need a break from these so this will be the last one for a while. The model itself if located at the bottom of this page. Hope you enjoy.

RE: Follow Me Funkyness
Brad,
I placed three files in a zip file at the bottom of this page. The zip file is called follow_me_problem_files. These were the files I used to create the three long horizontal curved shapes in the image below. Each one gave me problems. The first worked from one end but not the other. The 2nd and 3rd had to be done in stages. I'd love to know how to avoid this.
Alan, I'm usually working at fairly large scales but I'll give your method a try. Should have done it yesterday but I forgot. Definitely will next time. Thanks for the suggestion!

Abstract Expressionist House 3
My school was closed because of snow yesterday so I was able to put some work into the third iteration of this idea. I'll finish it up over the weekend but thought I'd share this intermediate stage image.

RE: What NOT to do when home from work
Really nice model. Looks beautifully done. Sometimes a break from the routine can free up creativity. Thanks for sharing.

Follow Me Funkyness
I'm not sure this is a bug or just something I don't understand. I often use the Follow Me tool to extrude a face along a complex curved line. Sometimes this works like a charm and sometimes the dreaded "This does not appear to be a valid path" dialog appears. I haven't been able to identify a pattern. Can anyone explain why this happens and how to avoid it? Thanks, Fred

RE: Abstract Expressionist House 2
The render is very cool! The feeling is kinda spooky though. Not sure I'd want to go up to that house on Halloween. I love the way you have a light source catch the faces near the tops of the taller set of curved vertical posts. Most enjoyable. Thanks for sharing. Fred

@archi rag said:
hi the model looks really good have u thought about rendering it?
also have u had any thoughts on what materials u would use or how the internal layout would work? Thanks so much for the comments.
I have thought about rendering, but am using a Mac and waiting for the soon to be released (I hope) Mac version of Podium.
Re internal layout. I've actually got that pretty much worked out for this house but didn't feel like modeling it. The general theme would be an open plan with as few divisions as possible.
Re materials. No idea really. I think there are so many possibilities with materials these days that it could all be worked out, but it would be expensive.

Abstract Expressionist House 2
Still feeling my way forward with these. Trying various things to see how they work. I've come to view the models as architectural follies... feel free to interpret that as you may. I do think they might make enjoyable summer homes. The model itself is available at the bottom of this page, it is called AEH 2 v3.skp.zip
Enjoy, Fred
