    • RE: WebDialog Sub Forum? (Poll added)

I really don't know anything about webdialogs, but placing them in a more localized and searchable area sounds like a good idea.

I must ask though, would this be like the woodworker's specific area? I'd hate to think that something useful would be brought up in the WD forum and have it be inaccessible/unsearched by the regular forum login.

    • RE: Google living off the backs of the bruised?

Regarding other things Google makes that are free to everyone, some of those items are moneymakers in their own right such as GE, which I've seen used by news outfits on TV.

While I agree very strongly with the people that point out that the core of SU has not seen bugs cleaned up or realistic useful improvements made such as NURBS functionality, good UV tools, or multi-core support, the fact remains that the vast majority of users have a virtually fully operational 3d modeling program without any limits (save export file types and LO) at no charge! Try getting a fully operational Maya or 3DS Max from Autodesk with .OBJ capability removed and no time limit on the demo, or any other good 3d package for that matter. Let me know how that goes.

I also might add that SU would likely not be free or so inexpensive relative to other systems if Google spent a lot more time and money on improving it. I'm sure that the people that paid for it would like to have more improvements and advancements in the software for their financial contribution, but again, that would make costs go up. For those of us that cannot afford to purchase it, it's the community's fantastic contributions that make the software what it is for everyone today, and at no additional out of pocket cost for those who did pay for it.

I'm afraid you can't have it both ways - either you get an advanced, fully featured package at a cost; or you get a simplified package for "cheap" and try to figure the rest out yourself.

That chart certainly throws some perspective on things, doesn't it?

Can't stand the media; if there isn't anything news-worthy, they'll make something up!

The cough (which I still have) has now lasted 6 weeks (9 weeks over the summer).

You too, eh? It took forever for that cough to go away; just like you said, about 6 weeks.

    • Have you had H1N1

Had it about 3 months ago; the family got together for my mother-in-law's 60th on a "dinner train" in California. All 6 of us got the flu at exactly the same time - headache, fever for a couple of days, soreness, cough, ahem digestive issues, etc... We called our respective doctors, and none of them were interested in it unless it was bad enough to require hospitalization; but then, nobody really cared 3 months ago, now that it's back in the news, it's a big deal.

Wasn't a bad flu for us, more like moderate and very uncomfortable.

I know that many thousands of people are under the illusion that vaccinations actually do something.

I guess smallpox and polio just decided it was time for a holiday then.

      don't forget whooping cough...

Yellow Fever, and any number of other tropical diseases that used to be rampant in the American South, have been almost completely eradicated here thanks to vaccines.

It is obviously your choice as a parent to decide what medical care your children receive, but at the same time with strong evidence pointing to the benefits of modern medicine, one must weigh the risk and responsibilities as a parent against whether or not an antibiotic or vaccine will hurt or help more than the potential infection will.

I for one have had a couple of serious issues as a child that, but for antibiotics, would likely not have survived.

    • RE: Bing vs Google

Apple has done wonders for its image, kudos to their marketing department. Having a very stable, modestly powerful, well thought out platform helps a lot too.

Just like you said though, Apple is still, by far, the most tight fisted of the two.

Why does Apple look better? 1) Oooh, shiny! 2) They didn't release Win2K, WinME, Vista, or any other operating system that had to get massive patches (service packs) or fixes for big security loopholes. Couple #2 with people forking out hundreds of dollars for a supposedly new-and-better operating system, and that makes for a bad rap.

    • RE: Visitors

Somewhere I read that perfection isn't about how much you can add to something, it's when you can't remove any more. That's pretty much from memory, but I'm sure someone will recognize the real quote.

That model and render gets pretty darn close. How powerful simplicity can be. Very nice.

More results does not mean better results, I find Google search has more crap than fact in it's results.

IIRC sites can be built/worded in such a manner that they will be pulled up by a search engine even though they may have little to do with what you were actually searching for - like the sites that when you Googled "stupid" (or whatever the word was) and it pulled up then President George Bush's webpage first.

Wait until these same people figure out how to make Bing pull up their junk first too, and then it'll be just like Google.
