TIG- found the problem with the Bool'd groups -BT can create a group inside a group when bool-ing more than two groups, which I should have spotted in Outliner.

When manifold highlighted RED and said 'NO' I simply exploded the extra group and answered my earlier ?, it was much faster on the bool'd group and I assume would be the similar on a manually repaired group.

Note for users: The manual option also gives more control over the mesh shape at the torus/box intersection.

Basically TIG you've done a fantastic job on this, thank you

I'm convinced you, Chuck, and I won't be the only end-user's for this, it has soo many uses.

for now I'll keep putting up images that help or hinder, and get back to some bent text testing....

do you think it's ready for a wider audience yet, I'm planing on trying to do a tutorial when your happy?
un-intersected single groupinitial test picked up the buried group and then 'presto'

ADD: it's what I thought re: tri/quads, just thought I'd ask

      TIG,
I've got a couple of test on the go, I'll report on them when they're cooked.

      some additional ?'s

which should be faster for manifold, simply continuing after fail or a manual repair than re-test continue

would it be possible to choose bothquad's and tri's as two separate groups, if you have two different post destinations for the object?

or would EraseCoplanar on a copy of a Tri'd group give identical mesh results?

      TIG,

they were groups inside a group, and got a pass, (they are all manifold) it only zaps them if you say YES,
the same thing happened after I BoolTool'd all 3 groups into 1 group, initial pass (as it should), but zapped if you choose YES, I only got the RED on that one drawing, I'll re run the first set-up and post the if no red is shown again.

I have just set a Bool'd group run that Passed initial and didn't blitz the drawing when I hit YES

It's on a pair of torus + geodasic sphere bool group, and it is running.

original set ungrouped, but not booled

      and others work so smoothly

      Hi TIG,
I think it's working really nicely now, lot faster, plenty of info, it still passes inner faces that don't necessarily break the 1 edge, 2 face rule.
There are only two '4-faced' edges in the original drawing and if a BoolTool, VWS, or a manual delete is done first, (as it should be) than manifold does a speedy and detailed correction, orientation and triangulation. I'm wondering if a simple pre-flight check that states, "I'm not doing this-there are inner faces highlighted that you need to remove first" or something less long winded, might not be in order. I'll PM you some other screen shot's as well.

Am I the only one testing this????

Fresh off the press, No error messages in console, had lots of info zipping through, had Pass dialogs, so all seems to be functioning, but all passed have inner faces? john

EDIT: I did the first with Transparency ON, so just in case it wasn't see the faces I re-did with Trans OFF, but the faces are still inside and the orientation is different from first

      turned transparency off, orientations flip

      Cheers TIG,
I was just logging in to say, I've set up one of my Macs, with a fresh instal and only a few basic rubies that I've triple checked are clean. Just to test Manifold. That way any log errors on my system console should be easily spotted, and you posted this, so excellent timing. I'll keep you informed. john

    • RE: Xcode and Ruby function menu

      Hi,

I'm extremely unknowledgeable about scripting in general, and SU ruby in particular, but have a need (more a desire) to go through and Mac'ify any of my ruby set that give me Console(system) messages on start-up and in use,

It seems the main error (that I see) lies within SU itself and is there as soon as I load a clean instal of SU, before adding any additional rubies. It may or may not be a problem, but it generates pages of reports, which can't be good.

      [0x0-0x45045].com.google.sketchupfree7[548] SketchUp(548,0xa015e720) malloc: *** error for object 0xa03eb6d8: Non-aligned pointer being freed
      [0x0-0x45045].com.google.sketchupfree7[548] *** set a breakpoint in malloc_error_break to debug

as soon as I start adding rubies, I get additional error messages mostly like the examples below, usually telling me what line in which script, is at 'fault'

      [0x0-0x3b03b].com.google.sketchupfree7[373] /Library/Application Support/Google SketchUp 7/SketchUp/Plugins/Xyz/Abc.rb:218: warning: parenthesize argument(s) for future ver

      [0x0-0x45045].com.google.sketchupfree7[548] (eval):27: warning: already initialized constant ZERO_TOL
      [0x0-0x45045].com.google.sketchupfree7[548] #<NoMethodError: undefined method `rendering_options' for nil:NilClass>

from time to time I send these reports to Google (to no avail) and to individual authors who have then, tidied up the code.

I have also used Xcode to clean some scripts, and solve some glitches, so I know it all helps.

My first question is, On a script by script basis, can Xcode be set-up to 'find all>repair all' for these types of errors?

    • RE: [Plugin] Shape Bender Beta

      Hi Chris,

I had to do a job today using Shapebender to put text on tubes, as above, but more refined.

to my surprise, I actually had all the dialogs, option to select ends ,ect before running, I really didn't know they were there.

however, instead of making curved fonts, when I switched ends all it did was make an empty group, click again, another empty group, hit return another group.

I had outliner on, which is how I saw the groups, but suspecting it might be the problem, tuned it off, same thing.

working backward through my ruby instals, functionality returned when I removed the new VitrualWindSim ruby but without the end switching bits. because I really had a lot to do and the switching ability would speed it up, I stripped out all the rubies from my MacBook and only put what was needed for SB back in.

No extra bits, added VWS got all the whistles , but no Bells, so I just thought I'd let you know. I'll grab the Mac console log when I finish up and see if it shows anything.

well I got a response to my email re the plugin and heres the official line.

as I actually have an allergy to PC's can someone PM me the ruby, as it not covered by the license and I'll see if it runs on a Mac.

      %(#008040)[Hi John:

As for your SketchUp Plug-In questions:

      1. While Virtualwind in general is officially supported only on Windows XP,
we've had reports of success on a number of different platforms, including
Macs running Microsoft operating systems. I can't directly speak to the
SketchUp Plug-In (since it hasn't yet been internally tested on a Mac), but
I believe it should work -- SketchUp plug-ins are created using a
platform-independent scripting language, so it shouldn't matter what
        platform you're running SketchUp on.
(As a proviso though, it's theoretically possible that the SketchUp
plug-in interface itself is different on a Mac than on a PC. If that's the
case, then there might indeed be some incompatibilities.)
Also, if you are going to install the SketchUp Plug-In, be sure that you
have SketchUp already installed, because the Plug-In needs to know where to
        find SketchUp to properly install.

      2. The Plug-In is only downloadable as a part of the Virtualwind software
        download.

      3. The Plug-In is not purchasable as a separate package. However, although
the main Virtualwind application is protected by a 30-day trial license,
there are no licensing restrictions on the Plug-In. Therefore, if you go to
the Virtualwind web site and download the Free Trial, you will also get the
        unrestricted SketchUp Plug-In.

      4. Performance is highly dependent on the nature of the geometry. For most
models in the Google 3D Warehouse, the Plug-In operations complete in a
reasonable amount of time (usually within a couple of seconds, though
sometimes they may take a minute or two).
In extreme cases, the Plug-In can take a considerable amount of time: on
a model with 100,000 Faces and a thousand Group/Components, some operations
may take about an hour to complete. However, it's worth noting that native
SketchUp operations on such models take a similarly long amount of time
(Exploding all Groups -- which is a core SketchUp functionality -- can take
over an hour in such cases).
Usually, such extreme models are originally created by a CAD package
outside of SketchUp, and then were exported to SKP format. If the original
model is available, I would instead recommend trying to bypass SketchUp
altogether: I would try to use the original source CAD package to generate
an STL file (many CAD packages can do this), and then import the STL
        directly into Virtualwind.

If you have any further questions or would like any clarifications, please
      don't hesitate to write back.
