    • RE: [Plugin] Groups to Components

I was looking to convert groups into components and found this plugin. It is supposed to show up in a plugin tab. However, there is no Plugin tab anymore.

How to access the function on SU 2023?

(my use case is exporting parts of the SU model for Lumion phasing animation. For this every part has to be saved separately. There is a plugin that does export every component. however, the groups will not export. So I was looking for ways to convert the groups to components, so I can export it all into Lumion)

      Thank you.

      thank you for the reply.
yes, zoom exte se save the day.
still annoying though. I didn't have this trouble for 20 years of using SU.

    • UNEXPECTED JUMP view when switching from parallel projection

Please, help. It has been bugging me to the point when I decided to come here.
When I switch from parallel projection to perspective, my view jumps forward and I lose my subject.

If you experienced this before and you know how to cure it - PLEASE help.

(I think this problem appeared in 2021 or 2020, before it was switching nice and smooth)

      Thank you!

on clean models: the purpose of an architectural model is a form discovery. trying hundreds of combinations. by the time I'm done, the model is a xxx mess but I get a presentable image and the client is happy. now to print it, all I had to do is run it through makeprintable.com. otherwise it may take weeks to make clean.
      You see why I'm stressing.

    • MakePrintable closing shop

I just got am email that MakePrintable.com is closing the service in January 2023.
my whole process of making architectural sketchup models print was hinging on MakePrintable.com .
It was pulling the most messed up files and making it work.
I was looking for alternatives, but could not find anything even remotely able to fix my messy design models.

please, if you know anything else that works for3d printing complex SU, SHARE

    • RE: Carving textures

Ok, I did a bit of research :

      Velocity printing.xyz

They have a simple algorithm to apply any texture to a 3d print. Don't need to modify geometry

    • Carving textures

      I have a problem I can't solve:
How to carve wood grain into a model for 3d printing?

I want to wrap the whole model in 3d groves that represent wood.
Im sure SU is not the best tool for this, perhaps other software. I've seen amazing figure models with knitted closing that were not an applied image, it was an actual model. There has to be an easy way.

I bought some wood filament for my 3d printer, but it just looks like plastic. I want to carve wood texture isto my 3d pointed architectural models, so they are even more like wood.

      any advice?

    • RE: Printing Architectural Model.

I am in the same boat.

I got a very complex model of 1 200 000 sf. mixed-use building. I am using it to establish the viability of 3d printing for my office.
As you can imagine, many designers worked and modified it. It is a mess when it comes to geometry organization.
Organizing it into one solid using traditional tools does not appear feasible. When we are done with expressing our architectural ideas there is little time left before a presentation to a client. We need an automated way to take the mess of a model from designers and get it ready for 3d print.
I am also searching for a magic "shrink-wrap" that will disregard internal intersections and heal small holes.
Actually, our entire involvement with 3d printing is hinging on it.

      Please help.

Share a link to a possible solution. or at least hint at it.

    • RE: Moving all components to origin
      1. I feel ashamed, making a button is over my head. However, just pasting the script in to the command line, works.

      2. Import does bring the files in. The script doesn't place the imported DAEs into the model. It just loads them into the memory. I can see them in my component menu but not in the moles. (during manual placement - I got to click to place the DAE in. With the script -there is no click to place it.) How to do?

      Woo hooo!!! it works!!!

      2 more questions then:

      1. how do I make a button out of it?
      2. How to import a few hundred (DAE) objects simultaneously?

      Error: #<NameError: uninitialized constant Transformation>
      <main>:3:in block in <main>' <main>:in each'
      <main>:in `<main>'

Ruby is a foreign language to me (. It gave me an error.

Positioning to origin is a half task. another task is to import multiple files (instead of 1 by 1)

      1 Press import
      2. Pick file
      3. Pick 0,0,0 as insertion point
      4. repeat 176 times

    • Moving all components to origin

I have 176 topo map TILES produced in other soft in OBJ format.
I got to import it into SU. They all have common 0,0,0 origin. I got to manually import them one by one and manually move imported component origin into the common origin.

      A pain in a XXX.

Is there any way to automate this process? (I'll have to perform this in the future on many models (()

    • RE: Area calc dash board

Nifty Plug. Doesn't update real time. It is a small step up over the original leader tool as it is possible to update. However, the fact that I have to dig in into the component to update cancels all the fun.
      Ideally,
1.it would place a disconnected tag (so it always floats in the corner).
      2. Give real time update
      3. able to reference total material area.
      4. Tag without getting into the component

    • Area calc dash board

The way I calculate area in SU for functional layouts is by using "material area" calculations. Several Components (simple boxes) that represent different functions (office, retail, cinema) are painted on the bottom with the same material. I can stretch and move these boxes till im happy. Then i check this material area and i know my project total. Very convenient. What i was wandering, is there a plugin that can display this value in real time? Sort of a dash board. This way, i can see my total area while im changing it,without digging into menues every time i want to see it?

Looked at Blender: Gotten really sceared by complexity.

Tried LightUp:couldnt get it to export anything meaningful. Posted on forums for support, no luck.

Came across SimLab Composer: it was the answer to my prayers. It did everything I wanted and more. They are really friendly with import\exports. The bake looks good. Wooho.
