"you're joking, right?" Yes Jeff, back before emoticons existed, wink, meant I was joking, or in context, perhaps a number of things, but I was joking.

Just saw your added concept Jeff. Interesting. But lmao, no kidding it would be a pita to align all the geometry!

    • RE: Groin vault framing

Jeff, right or wrong, it seems to make an easy installation (10 minutes in the video! wink), a nice crisp junction at the seams, and it all just "hangs" on the ceiling joists.

I like your upside-down skate park, but the only one I've designed was concrete [3dwh:3d4yh90g]6f7ee0a07f7dfe151ed6f3df33858e31[/3dwh:3d4yh90g]

From looking at that perspective of the park you posted, I wonder if the purloins, for lack of a better word, have a beveled radius to match the curvature of the bowls?

I had been toying with using planes set at twelve inch heights to make the inter-sections of the asymmetrical ribs, but haven't had as much luck as I would have liked yet.

    • RE: Groin vault framing

Just got a chance to ;look at the replies.

Thanks for all the input, everyone!

I was watching videos at http://www.archwaysandceilings.com/, and decided to give it a try.

I think you're right Jeff, I'd have to build the king rafter first. I plotted it from the intersection of the two vaults and yest it's a bit "snakey.

My example of the symmetrical one I did miss a bit because I should anticipated where the columns/ walls would be but think I could refine it a bit and not have to have a king rafter. The guys in the above link didn't seem to need one.

Shep, I was leaning towards gluing up laminations, probably half spans.

And honestly, I might never even build one. But the folks over at Archways and Ceilings sort of peaked my interest as to whether I "could" build one or not.

      Thanks again all!

    • Groin vault framing

      Hey all,

I've been playing with framing groin vaults. I have no problem "surface modeling" them, seem to have at least a decent grasp of how to do a groin vault that is symmetrical.

But I was wondering if anyone here has any tips to construct one that is not.

I've tried several ways to work out the framing for a groin vault that is asymmetrical (one with a radius of 12' 6" and another of about 7' 6").

    • RE: Sheet Sizes

Personally I've never had a building department reject plans on 11x17, as long as the submitted plans convey the gist of the house/addition(and never had a building inspector actually check any measurements on site). I've been at the building inspectors when homeowners sumit on grid paper, without a problem.

When I drafted by hand I used mostly 18x24, but I've only designed single family dwellings that fit that size fairly well.

I will add that mostly I do "shop drawings" as 80% of the time I am working from existing plans that just need things tweaked, like elevations of cabinets that are by no means "working plans".

I do however have a 44" printer that is mostly used for my photography studio or clients that need to be "impressed" with ARCH D or ARCH E plans, and most of the time they don't even know what they are looking at, until I build it.

Are smaller print's becoming the norm? Probably not for large projects. The plans for the project I'm on now are printed on ARCH E, all 40 or so pages.

    • RE: Fix for Profile Builder Previews in SU2013

OK, I'm still having issues with Profile builder in SU8 Pro, not being able to see thumbnails.

This first happened when I loaded SU 13. As none of the above fixes seemed to work, I removed SU 13 from my computer. That restored the thumbnails in PB.

I have now upgraded to SU 14 Pro and am having the same issues with my 8 Pro.

I dropped the new JS file into the plug-ins folder and got nothing but a bug-splat.

Any help for me out there?

    • RE: SketchUp 2014

The bad thing for me is I don't have time to re-load all my rubies, and re-learn all the extra nuisances. I don't use SU as a hobby, I work, and use it for work. Why can't all my plug-ins just be automatically migrated? That's why I pitched the 2013 version, it screwed up my profile builder in my Pro 8 version. Heck, even though I prefer SU to AutoCAD, at least I can revert to AutoCAD classic and be seeing the icons I'm used to. Not to mention the same right click menus. (OK, I'm over it, my rant that is).

I'll be looking for more feedback on 2014, before I upgrade.

And what the heck, new arcs? We've been begging for true vector circles and arcs. When's that coming?

    • RE: Recommend me a laptop

I've had great results with my ASUS Republic of Gamers G750JH-DB71 17.3" Notebook , it's heavy, and the power block is the size of a brick. But it rocks SU. I'm not that familiar with "Lumion", but I also use it for renders, and I'm a heavy PhotoShop user. It handles everything I throw at it.

    • Hate to ask, but

I've for the last 5 years or so used SU to help me design and build everything from cabinets to houses. It has served me well.

Recently, I've become involved in a major project, and have been asked to do one edit after another.

I'm curious as to what all of you charge. I know, I know...it's none of my business, right?

So if anyone would be so kind as to respond, please do it via PM.

      Thanks,

      Chris Ryan

Edit: Thank you all that have responded, I really appreciate you taking your time to provide me with answers. I am apparently pricing my work appropriately! (Although it would have been nice to find our everyone but me was getting $200 an hour wink)

      Greatfully,

I've had the same problem many times. I've found that it is more reliable to use "MOVE/control", but I'd love to see a real answer to your question.

    • I seem to have lost "thumbnails" for profile builder

OK, the subject line seems to have said it all. I won't try to blame it on my recent download of SU 2013, however I've never had an issue with PB before (currently running SU8 Pro).

Any thoughts? Should I just email Dale?

Thank you Alan, but I'm still getting them, seems like I'm stuck in some loop from when the site was down for a few hours. I'm getting here now, through links to here from the Trimble SketchUp forum.

I guess I need to delete my browser history(I hope).

      Hi all, I've been getting a "SQL ERROR [ mysql4 ]

An sql error occurred while fetching this page. Please contact an administrator if this problem persists." alternating with "Database connection error (2): Could not connect to MySQL." When I try to log on here.

      Anyone else having that trouble?

Just out of curiosity, what was the "Windows Experience Index" number? The fact that I don't have SSDs, always has dragged mine down to the mid 5's. Processor, memory, and graphics are in the high 7's.

I know this is a more or less arbitrary assignment of numbers, but does the SSD, bring your numbers up to the high 7's?

I'm still following this and am still very interested.

Will you have to order these units as identical clones, or can they be "tweaked" if there are some features that I would like?

Oh, did you ever hear from Sonder as what settings he's using on those monster screens? Just curious.
