RE: Down the stairs
Amazing image Jonathan!!
My only crit is a little pet peeve of mine.......floor / ceiling structure is way too thin. As a point of reference - the top bolt location on the railing posts essentially would be below the finish level of the upper floor. Most people won't even notice, but unfortunately once I do I have a hard time moving my eye away from it - thinking that maybe there is something else going on there that I am missing.

RE: Cad to Sketchup Issue - Please help
TIG,
Great explenation of x-refs in CAD. External References are one of the most powerfull features of all of the different AutoCAD flavors. Multi-discipline teams / offices could never survive without them. That being said - I have never seen a topic and concept that so confuses a typical CAD user more than x-refs, and their proper use.
This 2 pages is a a good reminder of why I am so damn glad we migrated to Revit this past year!

RE: You know you're either addicted...
2 common symptoms are ....... 1) when you see the final construction docs and tell the Project Manager "man that would have looked much cooler if it was modeled in sketchup" and then 2) when you tell that same PM that he wouldn't be so over his production budget for CD's if the designer had explored his options using sketchup in the Schematic phase instead of constantly changing the production drawings through later phases.

RE: BIM And Landscape Architecture?
Chris,
We are a full service AE where I work for(http://www.lrkimball.com) including LA services within the Architecture Division I am a part of. We have migrated Architectural and Structural disciplines to Revit, and are slowly trying to drag the MEP disciplines. We have looked at the limited Site / LA tools within Revit (and the new Eagle Point add-on) but have decided to wait until more appropriate tools and conten are available. We currently use Civil 3D for our LA people in-division, as well as for the Civil / Survey / Highway folks in the other divisions. There realy isn't any comparison between the 2 for LA function right now, even with the enhanced topo features reportedly part of the 2011 release - which is due any day now. I will have to look for the link when I am back in the office, but I did see a reference to Autodesk now starting to seriously consider a Site version of Revit that would include LA / Civil tools. It will be great for the entire project teams to be working in BIM, but I wouldn't anticipate it all that soon considering the monumental task it will be to create the corresponding tools and content required.
As a lomg range strategy - it probably wouldn't hurt to get some eposure to BIM in general and Revit more specifically now. It IS a whole different approach and mindset though - which some people admittedly have a very difficult time transitioning to.
Hope this helps!

With this kind of "robbery" how can anything be worse?
This is why i have to agree and hope that this attempt will at the least get us started in the right direction. I don't necessarily believe in all that is included - but something has to change. I am a former republican that is so pissed off at the party for playing the kid on the block that is taking his ball and going home since he didn't get his own way. Just what I want my tax dollars to subsidize - countless politicians that aren't going to do any governig from now on, but rather focus on the next election - and then the next election. Makes me so mad I wanna
! As long as there is no serious debate about what is actually broken and how to fix it!
Allow me a brief example.....My wife recently went for routine exams, including a mammogram. Pretty routine stuff and thankfully everything is fine, but for a while we were concerned. When she had the first exam - it was mis-read by a shall we say "less experienced" radiological staff reviewing the results. The images presented what was mistakenly identified as "spots" that required a second more thorough exam, and a sonogram as well. This had us on edge for the week till we got back in for the test. When she is there - a much more qualified doctor sees her to let her know everything is fine - they just had to do the additional test because of the flagging that the originally reported "spots" cause when the insurers, etc. see the report. He also explained that the first reading is a common mistake and that it could have been identified at the time for what it is - the result of the level of compression caused when larger breasted women get the exam.
He might have recommended additional tests anyways - but he assured it was something that he has seen many times, and that the additional tests confirmed.
So - no $11,000 bill, but what is coming through is (for the most part) of course not covered by insurance the second time around since she already had her "covered" exam for the year. That on top of being billed by 4 different entities now (hospital, radiology group, doctor-1, doctor-2) with none of the bills seeming to jive with the other billings..................
It is broken badly and needs to be fixed!!!!

RE: A couple of new wet ones...
That first one is just outstanding!
Some of your best work yet, If I had one crit - maybe just a little too bright? The first level behind the pool is just a little burned. And I would love to somehow see the stone pattern a little bit more for the white stone in some areas....but that is just being really picky Second view - not my preferred pov - too much focus on the dead trees in the front yard
great work as usual Tom!

RE: Got Beef?
The almost complete loss of critical analysis
/ constructive criticism in the gallery section. While it is nice to hear the occasional "nice work" "I really like it" etc. ........ tell me what it is you like about it, or better yet what you don't like and why. I fear a few bad threads have made some gun shy, and others are now too afraid to offend and won't comment with anything of substance........
OK - 1 more and I will stop for now. Gazillion page mega-threads made up mostly of car wip's and more specifically individual car parts and the posters own indignant replies as to why nobody commented on their fancy freekin door handle that received 5 star ratings on google's craphouse!
OK - sorry for the vent but it felt good to get that out of my system!

RE: A couple new DWC's...
Tom,
Cool - thanks for the link! I missed these somehow. The explanation of how you set the last one up is great. I would say the integration of the trees and the spherical skies in the DWC style are just great! Twilight does such a great job with light and tone balance that it is IMHO an invaluable tool for NPR work.
Thanks agaion for the trees and keep up the great work!!!!

RE: A couple new DWC's...
Tom,
Lovely as usual - these both mix really well with the backgrounds. I too would like to know how you (or more appropriately when) you add these in. The only crit I have of the first one is that the style of house itself just doesn't seem to convince as a "country home". I think it is more fitting in the urban setting you had it in from your previous series.
The second one is very nicely integrated. My guess on the city is Cincinnati, and if this is an actual building - I would be curious to know the history? BTW - I really like the foreground trees in the second image - what collection are they in?

RE: Drumkit (Updated Feb 25 2010)
Scott,
Cool - great to have the reference right in front of you. Does the 7000 dbl. head give you a single beat or is is slightly offset to give a double note? I have had my kit in mothballs for 5 years since I moved my sons to the attic. I opnly ever played a kit as a hobby, but I always wanted to give a double bass setup a go. There are a couple of other drummers on here IIRC - I think modelhead plays.
Again - really nice work - that pedal is a nice piece of engineering!

RE: Damn toolbars...
Alex,
I know what you mean about the Revit Ribbons - but when you get used to where everything is (I still have to look for 4 or 5 items I commonly use) it becomes pretty productive. Something similar would be nice for SU - but I doubt you will see Google adopt such a MS flavor. I have to instruct and often support users @ work on SU, and it drives me crazy looking for toolbars in their perosnalized layouts.

Scott,
Really great work on the kit. The detail on the dbl. base pedal is outstanding! What are you using for a working reference?

RE: Poolhouse WIP
Thanks for the feedback guys - it really helps! Yes - these images are of just the poolhouse and pool/patio area that I have pulled out of the main house file so I could work on them more easily. I don't usually have things like backgrounds added while I am working on them.
Dylan - plants are just edits to free things I have found on the web - most likely these were from the WH. The planter is from the mfg. Kornegy's collection on the WH. I do this as a hobby - so I don't have a lot of discretionary funds or I would buy both Solo and Tom's plants / trees.
Scott - I will fix the coping on the pool, but good or bad I usually stay away from people if possible - hence the quality issue with the one @ the interior image. Just wanted a way to test the effectiveness of the striped etched glazing. I don't know if it works well enough for me - I might try something else. You are right in that the throw of the lights above the sink is too harsh. I will also be swapping them out with others, and will use ies files - they work well with Twilight Render. I can easily fix the tp lines before exported from SU.
Thanks Again!

Poolhouse WIP
A couple of WIP images on the Corbu Shodan Poolhouse I am working on. Twilight rendered images with SU linework overlays. 1 Exterior of the pool / hot tub / patio, and one interior @ the shower / bathroom.
