      Gurkan,

      I am not sure what type of comments you are looking for, so I will leave the design topic alone other than to say what you are depicting is probably closer to eclectic / transitional than it is traditional.

      I think the lighting under the cabinet in the last image and the wall sconces look very natural. The rest of the lighting - not so much. The ceilings & lighting from there IMO really let the rest of your model / images down. The lighting sources seem unnatural and the burn spots seem odd at best.

      I think good lighting would give your scene much more depth / mood to it. Look at some interiors magazines or web sites to compare what you see in the lighting and how it affects surfaces. The modeling and texturing seem very good and can look better with some adjustments to the lighting!

      I don't have any of these renderer's and I found this post most rewarding. Massimo - thanks so much for taking the time here to explain the detail in the material, and thanks for the model as well!

      Katt,

      Very nice work for a beginner. You have received plenty of rendering suggestions so I will tailor mine to Interiors based feedback. There are two levels of design that I always look for in good imaging that set the really great project work apart. One is scale, and the other is assembly. And they can apply across multiple aspects as well.

      For instance - Look at your two images and then look at similar spaces in magazines and/or on the web, or at actual life. If your environment doesn't look like what you are rendering, that doesn't really matter. What you are looking at is in the details of scale and assembly.

      For instance in the first image;

      • Look more closely ta how a window that size would be detailed. The small section of wall (assuming drywall covered) below the window to the floor is a bit odd from a construction assembly standpoint. It would be more likely the internal opening would go to the floor and the frame would sit on the floor. Or as an alternative put a nice thick sill/window stool on there wher you could set plants in the sunlight.
        list]

      • The Shelf over the flat screen - how is that attached / supported from the wall?And as was suggested before - a slight bevel on the edges reflects more realistically - just like adding small gaps between the shelf and the wall would add a slight shadow line hinting at an attachment.[/[/list]

      For the second (kitchen cabinets) image;

      • Look at real life and then the scale of minor details like the thickness of the counter, the height and depth of the toe-kick (base) of the cabinets, the support structure (plate or platform) that would be at the top of the peninsula leg under the counter, and ssuming granite as the material you are depicting - what type of edge the surface would have.

      • Small details like a little tilt / offset of the painting on the wall, some definition on the material and what is in the opening in the base cabinet at the corner, the material definition (needs to contrast) of the handles / pulls

      • The scale / size / materials of the Range / Exhaust hood / backsplash

      It not difficult to tweak these things to make what is a very good image even more realistic, it just takes knowing what to look for and the effort to look!

      Looking forward to seeing your updates!

      OK - so I am curious based on the question and the response. What is it about Revit that makes you feel it is a monster? And for the response - what does Trimble have that is in the same market segement as Revit?

    • RE: Revit Question

      Chris,

      There is no technical reason for them not to provide you with a "copy" of their Revit file in Revit (.rvt) format. Even if they operate in a workshared environment where multiple users access the central file - they can use the option to "save a detached copy" to create a copy of the central file for you.

      If they are a Subscription member - there is a really nice utility that is essentially the same as the old "pack-and-go" Autocad utility. It will create a copy (detached if it is a central file) of the .rvt file and also gathers any linked files (acad or revit) and images into a seperate folder.

      As Tig noted - Revit is version specific and you can't go back. So being on the same version as consultants or firms you work with is important.

    • RE: MLB playoffs/World series anyone?

      Pete,

      The playoffs so far have been pretty entertaining! I must admit - I loved seeing the Yankees lose the other night. I have liked Leyland (coach of Detroit) since he was the coach here of the Pirates. Obviously part of the local crowd (I live in central PA) is disappointed in the Phils losing, but I think the Cards vs. Brewers series will be a good one as well. The pitching duel the other night with the cards / phils game 5 was something else.

      While much too slow for a lot of people - I love the little nuances that make the game what it is. Hopefully they will resume the game tonight if the weather allows.

    • RE: 911 Call

      I know what you mean - they really don't like that. Many years ago I was home with the kids for the day while the wife was out somewhere. I had 4 under the age of 5 @ the time with 18 month old twins. I was in the kitchen working on lunch for them with the twins in their highchairs and the next oldest helping me when there was a knock at the door. Two officers greeted me and asked if everything was OK. They welcomed themselves in the door and looked around and asked where my wife was. Then they proceeded to ask my daughter (3 at the time) where her mommy was. Was kind of surreal - then they got a radio call that the caller was still on the phone. I yelled for my 4 1/2 year old son - he was upstairs on the phone having a conversation with the 911 operator the whole time. The officers chuckled a little and talked to my son (including asking him where mommy was) as I hung up the phone. They then proceeded to walk through the downstairs of the house just for good measure and where then on their way.

    • RE: Autocad floating toolbars, and lines flickering

      Rock1,

      It has been my ackexperience that the last coupld of versions of Autodesk products are rather fussy with regards to the video driver, especially under Windows 7. I suggest you go to the Adesk site and look for a reference to approved video drivers. While most other apps, including windows do best with the latest drivers - Aurodesk sometimes recommends a driver that is 2 or 3 versions back.

    • RE: RANT!!

      Ken,

      All over the place was in reference to starting to debate the debt issue and then wandering through teabagging, taxes, a truck story and now public schools. I was trying to pin down exactly what you and Solo were originally debating but I think that is moot now.

      So if by the truck story analogy you mean we can't just expect to print more money to get out of this - then I agree. And the out of control spending is the issue. The undertone I get is that you pay your taxes and don't like pulling your own weight when the "freeloaders" skate - I couldn't agree more. While the schools are a whole other issue - I understand your sentiment and agree that the problem starts at home. I paid to send 4 of my kids to parochial school through 6th grade for the discipline and the education. 2 of them continued through high school. It was really tough finacially for many years and we went without a lot of the things I saw other people have like new cars every 2 years, etc. - but it was the best money I have spent to date!

      All of the options right now scare me. As a "cured" republican - I bought into that message of hope only to see the messenger lose his convictions the mimnute his party started calling in their marker for helping to put him in office. I think it will be interesting to see how the next 15 months work out. We have seen the effects of the promise of "change" over the last two elections (2008 / 2010) and how is that working out for us?

      The reality is we needed to achieve 4 Trillion in cuts, and there were plenty of opportunities to get there. Neither side could stomach the compromise needed to get there!

      So - for me it is a full circle back to the original topic of RANT - both sides (Republican & Democrat) piss me off! 😠

    • RE: RANT!!

      Ken,

      You are kind of all over the place on this - but I agree strongly with one thing you said. Not the teabagger definiton 😲 (learn something new here everyday) but the five words ("I will not run again") reference! We suffer from a lack of leadership in all facets of the government (President and both Houses) as partisan politics rule the day and every politician's first priroity once they are elected seems to be pandering to those that will help to get them re-elected. I would be really interested to see how it would work if we eliminated politics as a profession and made it all single 4 year terms, and you could only run again after sitting out a term. I think that would be much more of a "for the people by the people" approach.

      The market reactions to the S&P ratings reflect a clear lack of confidence that the current group in both the Whitehouse and on Capitol Hill will be able to get past the Politics and deal with the financial issues that are facing this country. While the economists don't agree on all of the points - if you read through what they write or listen to their comments, there are some clear basic concepts and no one in the Government seems to want to listen.

      On top of all of this - if you look closely at who is lining up to take the next shot at it in 2012............scary 😮

    • RE: BoxPod

      Pete,

      I like the concept and idea - the example of the London Olympics is relevant to me as my son found out @ his college orientation this past month that the marching band (he plays the tuba) will be marching and performing @ the olympics next summer. They are being housed in the dorms @ one of the uni's there - can't remember which one.

      The other commercial uses mentiond really start to give this life, but the issues raised can be roadblocks. A couple that stand out are;
      Utility connections- this would be expensive if they are done on a singular basis, and can be an impediment for location as well.
      Fork-lift capability - you images show the fork lift approach @ door side. Not sure that would be good as that is the likely side (and the opposite) to take the most beating druing that movement. Also - the bottom "feet" would likely to be best not to be solid in either direction to allow for surf water drainage underneith in either direction - no matter if it is in place or in storage.
      size - 80 sf is large for the functionality you are describing. You may be able to tighten that up a little.

      I like Bruce's idea of the insulation being injection molded, as well a the shell and plug-in core being seperate components. The durability / abuse issue is valid for container like units. Look at the images of the metal shipping containers again or even (as silly as it sounds) some sci-fi storage boxes - the sides are not flat for a reason.

      Lastly - the singular concept may not be economically viable. How many instances do you think there would be a need for single units? It may make sense to develop them as doubles or quads. With the materials, etc. you are looking at I would imagine a smaller big-box hardware store type delivery truck with the small hoist could carry one or two multi-units and easily lift-drop them in place wherever you want. We have a lot of 24-7 Gas (shale fracking) work going on in my state right now and lodging for the workers is @ a premium. I could see small developments of these multi-units set on a quick pad to accomodate the transient workforce! 👍

      I like the idea Pete, and your images of it of course are outstanding. How many square feet total? It's a tad nicer than the modulars (pre-cast concrete correctional cells) that I have been working with lately. You may want to use a combi-unit for the sink/toilet to save on connections and piping space. It will also open up the bathroom portion.
