    • RE: What do people use SketchUp for?

Something which I don't that I have recently been doing is light fixture design. Perhaps there is not much of that going on but as likely is the fact that folks are protective of their work; that certainly has kept me from posting more of it, as if someone might think my concepts worthy and would evilly profit from my glorious work!

(Yes, the limits of SU alone for this are clear - creating the actual light emitting source (without renderers or add-ons).)

On the other hand, all you manufacturers out there, PM me with your offers, please. (BTW, that's a joke, not a solicitation.)

Otherwise, architecture and fun, and self-aggrandizement.

    • RE: Geodesic Dome Truss by TaffGoch - cloning to sphere?

'Component onto face' doesn't know the rotation that is desired and so cannot necessarily properly rotate it but still it can be used and the results tweaked because in this case there are only 2 rotations.

pic shows components as placed; 10 'wrong', 10 'right.' All endpoints should be at intersections.

      faces into components-2.JPG

pic shows 10 'wrong' rotated internally and redefined. So job is done with 2 rather than 1 component definition.

Merci, Pilou. I don't think I need Chris' PI for this as I have no problem selecting the faces that I want. I'm not sure how the TIG code bits help, either. I want each face or each face group to be made into an instance of the same component.

Your mark-up tool is very nice, though. Is it available in English?

Thierry, you won't get off that easily. Nice of you to include the ship pic!

Anyway as they were saying, or implying, since your segments are not aligned it is impossible to have 7 equals made out of 5 nearly equal when they are disjointed. That's why numbthumb suggested something closer to curve and thus smoother to begin with, that could be made into 7 equal segments, perhaps. My pic just shows your geometry with a line connecting the beginning ans end directly, then divided into 7 equal segments which could then be moved around in 3d to approximate your original.

    • Convert disoriented group copies into component instances

The faces are identical except for their locations. I want them to be the same component (that is, copies of the same component), but so far have not succeeded. Is there an easy way. When I group each face with its edges they are all different groups, not copies of the same. I know I can place a component onto each face and then edit that to be what I want but I'd like something quicker if possible.

Mine, too. Where's the crowd, anyway? I really don't want to have to work at this. But you do some nice things with it, so...

Now I must figure out what is my problem.

      Merci, Pilou, for your patience.

      LATER THAT SAME DAY:

The database file thumbs.db is new, and apparently important.

I made a new folder and substituted my image for yours, but renamed things so the exe. and db would apply if need be.

      processing-8.JPG

It seems essential; how, where and when is the db file created?

Well, thanks and that's very good news that it ain't nothing to do with SCF. I only saw it that once for awhile, perhaps while another (bad) tab was open. ? . No bad browser extensions found, no such programs installed, but there was an offending cookie, so I blocked the sites in FF. I am mindful of the third party piggyback installs and do not allow, but some others may not be as mistake-proof as I am. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

The left image in the first image is the typical SketchUp sphere construction (I call it 'radial'), the right image is what I'm looking for (I call it 'non-radial').

Perfect only from a distance. I wish there were a draw non-radial tri- and quad- mesh plugin, with face size/number/density settings.

I will reread your first post. Other than that, I am not sure what you are saying. The pic you show is my pic, so that yes is my setup. 'Arborescence' I assume means tree (directory, folder) structure.

      My OS is Vista 64.

Does the trick. And has been doing so since 2008.

You know how much time you could have saved me if you were paying more attention to my problems?

Perhaps I should pay better attention...

      Thank you very much, Gilles.
