    • RE: Please help... :S ( British Museum roof structure )

      Nice again πŸ˜„
I just found a top view of it, from a WIP that claims that it was drawn from a plan in a book.
      http://forums.cgarchitect.com/36383-british-museum-great-court.html

The even, swirly vertical ribs would be quite difficult to make without a lot of hand editing, don't you think?

    • RE: Please help... :S ( British Museum roof structure )

@Alan It looks nice, but if the goal is to model the British Museum roof it doesn't quite cut it?

The main problem is that it should be a (slightly flattened?) "hemi-thorus" with rectangular footprint/perimeter and circular hole. Besides, there are no horizontal ribs in the BM roof.

Another question (I've not been able to find a big picture of the outside) is whether all glass panels are the same size? Could they possibly be?
It is a real tricky modeling project indeed!!

    • RE: Exact measurements

How you enter multiple values at a time in the VCB depends on your Windows locale settings.
On my system I'd need to write: 3000mm;3000mm , or just 3m;3m
There is a setting in the Windows Control panel for this, but as we're using ',' as decimal separator it can't be used both for this and as separator at the same time.

I cannot find a way of transforming more than one vertex at a time.
The problem is that the desired transformation effects every point of the model.
Shame that you can't lock entire surfaces.

      Or have I missed something?

It is one point (or curve) at a time, and I can't really see how you could be able to move a face or entire object, as this would require skewing/shearing. How should this be controlled? By dragging a selection with a vertex reference? Using other plugins, like FFD, would be tricky in SU as you can only have one view at a time. In other apps you may deform in one view while watching the results in the camera view.

BTW, did I mention that Tgi3D have great support - even after midnight? πŸ˜„

    • RE: How to transform a normal room into an Ames Room...?

      I used Amorph.
Very simple actually - just made a room with a "window" and one wall missing.
      Placed the camera.
Selected all vertices of the house and used Lock Vertices.
Then I orbited a little and used the Amorph Move (AMove) tool to move vertices along the lock lines.
Then I switched to Top view, turned Perspective off and X-ray on.
AMoved/aligned vertices so that all walls were vertical (more or less), including the window/hole in the wall.
With vertices locked in a view you can ensure that the position of the vertices in that view will always appear to be in the same position, although they can actually be dragged/locked to any position that lies on the vector that goes between the camera and the vertex.
Very useful for many tasks, but also for such trompe l'oeil effects.
There is a free, limited vrsion of AMorph, and also a full 30-day trial version.

Is this how it should look?
Or should all walls/ceiling/floor be planar?

Such an Ames room sould be very easy to construct using Amorph from Tgi3D ?
You just View lock all corners in one view, and then you can move all vertices wherever you want, along restriction lines, and from the original POV it will always look the same.

That round trip to Geiranger is only on the north-bound route afaik.
It is not a part of the original 120 years old route, but added for the tourists some years ago.

According to net news here in Norway 34% of the population in Norway was following the TV broadcast!
They don't yet know how many follows the video stream, but apparently a lot more than anticipated...
It is much smoother now than in the start. I'm running it in the background while working πŸ˜‰

The live stream of Hurtigruten is now on its second day.
The ship just left Γ…lesund, for an 8h round trip into Storfjorden and Geirangerfjorden (UNESCO world heritage), maybe some of the most spectacular parts of the entire voyage, where all the cruise ships go.
      http://nrk.no/hurtigruten/
There were some startup problems with the stream (too many visitors), but now everything seems to be working just fine online, as well as on TV.
      Great fun to watch πŸ˜„

Not a bad idea, but certainly a bit more complex. Unfortunately, I've already started so I have about 4 files with 20 scenes each which I'd need to recreate.

    • RE: Is it possible to transfer scenes from one file to another?

You could handle this by using a master file where you have all your scenes (I strongly dislike that choice of word - it should be called pages or views IMO). You could make a component of all interior parts in, say "WingAFloor02". Then you save the component and rename it to "WingAFloor02Proxy". Edit the component and delete all the contents except for one simple "placeholder", if there are any suitable parts there for such use - otherwise just make a simple cube or something. Make sure that they have the same component axes. Save the new component with its new name.
Now you can use the 'reload' command to quickly replace the proxy with the "real" component, or vice versa, or have different versions that can easily be swapped without having to juggle with a lot of layers.
To save file size for this master file you should remember to purge all unused components first.

    • RE: 3D Photo Browser - Poor man's Deep Exploration?

I have both (my Deep Exploration is a bit old, but CAD version), and 3D Photo Browser works just as good. With Polygon Cruncher I think it usually does a better job than DE.
So 3D Photo browser is certainly cheaper, but usually gets the job done at least as good as its bigger brother.
For those conversion jobs that none of them can do I use Okino NuGraf/PolyTrans, the mother of them all πŸ˜‰ - including to/from SKP.

I posted a link to a timetable/sailing plan in the previous post:
      http://hurtigruten.no/Norge/praktisk/Rutetider/Sommer-154---149/
Only Norwegian, but there isn't much text anyway - mostly numbers and names.
AFAIK Trollfjorden should be somewhere between Svolvær and Stokmarknes?
There are several trollfjords here πŸ˜‰
Maybe late Sunday night (day 4), around 23:00 CET? Depending on the weather πŸ˜‰
Light enough to see it should be no problem anyway πŸ˜‰

OK. The promo/trailer will be replaced with a live stream at 19:45 CET, and departure is at 20:00.
Most likely there will be no direct URL to a video?
There's a live streaming test site online currently at http://nrkbeta.no/2011/06/15/da-er-vi-i-gang-hurtigruten-minutt-for-minutt/ where the video stream is shown as a Flash object/embed.

There's a map showing the current positions of the ships.
      http://hurtigruten.no/Norge/skipene-na/
and a sailing plan at http://hurtigruten.no/Norge/praktisk/Rutetider/Sommer-154---149/
"Our" ship is MS Nordnorge, currently located in Bergen, departure in 5 hours πŸ˜‰
There are 9 live cameras aboard.

This may sound a bit boring, but it was surprisingly captivating when they sent that 7 hour train trip. I spent several hours watching, and even downloaded the full 7h 1080p file afterwards by bitTorrent πŸ˜‰

I believe you can πŸ˜„ If you have time that is... The link is to a web-TV broadcast, and afaik it should be possible to view all over the world. English/Norwegian text.
The channel, NRK, did an experiment last year when they broadcast a 7-hour long train journey from Oslo to Bergen (Bergensbanen), and they were very surprised by all the good feedback. Lots of people actually saw the entire trip!
This time that will be a bit difficult, with 134 hours of continuous TV-watching πŸ˜‰

Today starts the TV program where you follow Hurtigruten/Norwegian Coastal Express, "The worlds most beautiful sea voyage" from Bergen to Kirkenes. That is 134 hours of continuous broadcasting, and not a single commercial.
