Might I ask why there are so many lines on the East side of the city wall?

those are the lines from the drape tool in the sandbox haven't had time to clean them up yet

because i have set the city up on terrain from the sandbox (push/pull tool won't extrude on curved surface), i used the stamp tool from the sandbox tools to project from the map down onto the terrain, to get the streets i used the drape tool, then i will build the buildings and stuff on the map and position them on the terrain.edges are heavy because i used the freehand tool to copy from the map, not sure if using straight lines and half circles will reduce it much, I do intend to clean it up as i go along (if this is possible and won't complicate model too much)might require remodel we'll see as I add stuff to it

just got email from book shop "streets of ankh morpork" on its way to me, map is out of stock till 14 nov

      G'Day Jacob

I have always wanted to try and do this since i found SU, seeing your model and now i have a wee bit more experience with SU i,m gonna give it a go too. don't know about low poly tho as each part is individualand very few of the buildings are the same gonna be huge.....as you will see it's my third attempt.... using normal SU tools with the sandbox being the main one used...

I have ordered the Terry Pratchet books "streets of ankh morpork" and "Mapp of Ankh Morpork", any interesting photos or drawings i can get from them i am more than willing to share with you if you need further references to the city

have attached a jpeg of my start on it, Model is 2,346' on a side

      G'Day Kyle, and folks

you could always try using the scale about center, using the scale tool hold ctrl and scale to size required hole will stay centered , but will increase in size as you scale the cube

      just a thought

      G'day Mav

      to make the roof
1 make triangle on 1 vertical edge of building, use guide lines to keep it on plane
2 select outline of the base
3 click on follow me tool

      done

i can do a simple model of it if you need it

    • RE: Learn to render

Gigga when you apply texture , especially wood or tiled texture, you can resize it in the edit button on your paint box drop down screen, click on paint pot, when screen appears , select edit, if texture greyed out go back to select and use eyedropper to select texture already on the model you want, then edit it

      hope this helps

    • Radial text

      G'Day Folks and folkess's

looking for a way to insert/ intersect radial text ( see Skp)

atm i am using 3d text tool
      then i explode said text

regroup each individual letter ( for ease of positioning)
Move into position and rotate to desired angle
      intersect and delete unwanted geometry

all in all a long convoluted process

    • RE: Filling faces

      G'day Sweet

      glad that helped,

sorry about that, as i said at 5am not the sharpest knife in the block

you can use trapezoid shapes , just make sure that your line tool is inferenced in the direction you are taking the line blue = up/down red left/right etc.

colour by axis helps a lot, lots of little tricks like that on the boards.

      πŸ‘

this is what i meant by not rectangular, should have said not closed. exaggerated to show clearer. some of the lines are off by minute amounts so hard to see

    • RE: Filling faces

      G"day sweet

i had a look at your model, well just the right hand top stairway, which had an open edge to the stairs, i turned on colour by axis and your model isn't planar, or just plain out of square

so thats why you have these open edges, to get to colour by axis, goto windows/styles/edit and bottom hale has window with choices click on this and chose colour by axis, any black lines in your model are off axis and there are quite a few in your model.

when constructing floors and stairwells i use the rectangle tool and push/pull that way if you start on a planar face you should end up with planar faces, using the line tool is difficult unless you watch the inference colour.

      any way hope this helped

ps if you measure the left and right floor on top of the stairs you get 4'8" 1 end and 3' 6" the other.or there abouts ( i closed the model ) and my memory is terible at 5am

    • RE: WIP: Family Tree

Yes Gaieus, i added some ledges along the wall indicating year span that each generation
      was born
      i.e
      1947-1955
      1932-1947
      1916 - 1928

      ect.

I suppose you could have each scene go to a specific branch or generation or follow a direct line of decent, for ancestors, maybe paternal, maternal ect.

good idea i like it thank you πŸ˜„

Molly interesting site, had a quick look and noticed you were having a
bad hair day building your model from card. couple sugestions, visit a hobby shop
and get some foam board (foam sandwiched between two pieces of card)used by a lot of modelers, you can also by styrene card in various shapes of bricks and stone(very expensive)also another site that might be of interest, (although the model would be huge)
is http://www.hirstarts.com/a plaster casting system which is very detailed i have used both to build models for my kid, who is into wargaming and needed buildings and terrain to play her games on. just a few suggestions that might make your model making a wee bit easier.
