    • Politics Forum....

Maybe I'm on my own here... ...but if want to talk politics, I'll go to a political forum. If I want to talk SketchUp....

Nothing wrong with the occassional political debate in the Corner Bar - it's one of many subjects that people will naturally discuss over a beer or two.

From where I stand, however, an entire section of this forum, dominated by the far-right (relative to my world-view) ramblings of a certain moderator, seems oddly out of place.

Free world of course, and I'd defend anyone's rights to express whatever views they may hold, wherever and however they choose to express them.

For my part I don't feel comfortable having my work on display in such close proximity to divisive political content.

Back to Google Groups for me. ๐Ÿ˜

    • Nice when it happens....

Thought I'd share this project from last year. One of those very rare occassions when the first sketch is what is built (almost) unchanged.
Sheet show the SU visual, and photo of the final installation.

    • RE: WIP Animation

Re: the jumpiness. Have you checked the frame rate of your export in SU and in Premier (under 'options' in the animation export window in SU)

29.97 is the standard for smooth animations, but you can get away with less. Also if the frame-rate of the export from premier is different (ie 24fps) you'll get some jumping as frames are missed.

    • RE: This mornings (panic) job...

Alexander: yes, lots of PS, using a Wacom tablet. Colour and Black/white versions exported from SU, then lots of layering-up and hand 'painting' The trick is, as with traditional markers, to keep the pen moving. I always keep the whole image visible on the screen, and work on the image as a whole, without zooming in and getting obsessed with the details. The beauty is that, within reason, the faster and looser you work, the better it looks ๐Ÿ˜„

      To Robmoors:

You know Google will do those conversions for you?

      eg. type " 4ft 2inches in mm " into google ๐Ÿ˜‰
works for most standard units of weight, volume, length etc....
      eg "36kg in pounds" etc...

    • RE: SU model, 3dsMax animation....

      Hi Tina.

Not much to say really... Straight 3DS export from SU. Background, lighting and camera animation all done in MAX.

Single camera constrained to a spline path, and a lighting set up of 16 omni lights, all with mapped shadows.

All the images on the walls were also applied in MAX - just because I find it quicker, easier and more easily adjustable than in SU. The other materials were straight from the SU Model.

Rendered at 640 X 480 pixels, 2000 frames at 30fps, it took about 4hrs to render on a dual-core Pentium PC. (But I did turn-off ray-traced reflections on the floor and glass to speed the render times.)

      Thanks for the kind words.

    • 2D CAD Recommendations please!

Looking for a good, low cost (the important part!!) 2D CAD package. Needs to be able to open and save AutoCad .dwg files. Only to be used for simple 2D drafting, so I don't want to pay Autodesk prices! and I don't need any advanced features. Any experience or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks,

      Andy

    • RE: Animation Pricing Structure?

Which is why I always charge animations as a separate entity : as you suggest Gai, the ammount of modelling, texturing etc is fixed, regardless of the length of animation. Separating your costs into modelling and animation makes this clear to the client from the beginning.

    • RE: Animation Pricing Structure?

I've learnt to be very strict on the pricing - that extra 10 second freebie becomes 30 seconds, becomes a minute.... Not a big fan of working for free 8O
Pretty easy to tweak an architectural animation to fit within a set time-frame (just walk a bit faster ๐Ÿ˜‰ )
The aerospace work was much more time-critical, hence the per-second charging.

Ultimately, as with all this stuff, just be sure that you're getting what you consider to be a fair price for your time - and don't under-value your skills and expertise.
