Andy, congratulations on the aerospace project! How exciting is that!!

      Was very exciting.

Watching the actual thing fly was a lot more exciting though :ewink:

Re: formats - I always agree this at the outset, and charge accordingly. On some projects I've thrown in a PC-friendly version for free, as the extra time taken is minimal.

    • RE: Animation Pricing Structure?

Per minute, with a variable based on complexity. By complexity I mean of the animation: eg. moving people, vehicles, cuts between scenes etc. Assuming you charge separately for the modelling, sqm etc isn't really relevant. Time to set-up and render is! Also additional charges based on method of delivery - on-line, CD-ROM, DVD etc.

I actually did some animation for an aerospace project which was charged per-second 😎

Don't be afraid to charge a good price for animations - good ones take a lot of your time to set-up. And it'll tie up a workstation for a good number of hours. Be sure your pricing reflects this. :ewink:

This is gonna destroy the mystery, but....
The SU output is attached below. Not exactly the best modelling is it ? 😳 Everything else was composited in PS. The boat hull and sail are from separate reference photos. Some layering, hand-painting with a Wacom, etc...

    • RE: Graphics Card Question.

Helps a lot, thankyou. Was considering spending the extra for a Nvidia Quaddro. Seems like the sensible thing to do.

    • Graphics Card Question.

Does anyone have any experience of the 256MB ATI Radeon HD 2600 graphics card?

Always had nvidia cards before, but I've got my eye on a new machine with this card.

Specs say it supports OpenGL 2.0, so I'm assuming there would not be any problems running SketchUp with this ?

      Any advice welcomed.

      Thanks,

    • RE: SU/Max/Photoshop

Dylan, not sure if there are any tutorials out there.
I'll see if I can put a quick step-by-step together over the next couple of days.
Really very straightforward - its down to having good photo reference to work from.

    • RE: SU/Max/Photoshop

      And the final compositefinal_matte.jpg

SU model was textured in Photoshop, then rendered in Max.
Back into Photoshop, where the tower was added to the background.
Then further Photoshopping to add clouds, the rocks on the right of frame, and additional painting to blend these bits together. The smoke was rendered in 3dsMax using particles, then added to the Photoshop file....

    • RE: Releasing SU model

Tina: yes, I have done that before. Usually charge an additional 100% of what they payed for the rendering alone, on the (slightly flawed) basis that this covers the potential loss of revenue from doing re-draws for them. On more than one occassion though, a client has bought the model, thinking that they can do all the subsequent changes, only to phone a few days later - having discovered that it's not as easy as it looks. Just be really careful that you don't lose repeat business as a result of selling the raw model...

Can't take credit for the cars, obviously. Thanks to those who provided them. Just finished this one - had to get this out for a client within 2 hrs. Lots that I'd do differently given time, but turned out ok.

    • RE: First Image

I'll be first to comment on the first image then πŸ˜„

Really like it. Always a bit wary of 3D foliage as it can look a bit fake - but not in this case.

My only query would be on the chosen viewpoint. My personal preference is for either realistic eye-level, or a more extreme over-head perspective. I feel perhaps this falls somewhere in between - although it does showcase the main element of the design (which I also like). Nice to see a K render without the grainy artifacts too.

      Good stuff Stu 😎

    • RE: Quick Sketch

      Thanks all.

Dylan: to be honest, the SU model is nothing much to look at - as all the details (corrugation etc) are painted on, not modelled. So the SU model is just a collection of primitive shapes really.

The rust: Very quick to do - once you've created some custom brushes in PS. I created some a while ago, using a photo of rust patterns to create some random brush shapes. Then it's just a case of layering up the colours.
