Great. Looks we'll have to shell out to get fixes -given it's not likely there'll be a point release before they start working on the new VfSU.
Sigh.
Nuts! I was wondering what will be the case for vfsu. Not a good sign.

RE: Vray for blender
I'm working on a big scene as I have time. I'm finding it's quite a bit of cleanup to export something with a lot of components.

odd, and it's even on an american flag guess the union jack was too hard to use.

Sorry to hear it.
Wish you the best with what you need to take care of. Hope you do find your way back eventually. -
RE: Sketchup is Inacurrate???

Sorry for the question but as I never use with it
On a plotter (image above) circles from SU are transformed (postscript or other) or it's just like on the sreen so tiny segments ?
From Jeff's answer seems yes (tiny segts)...It's always segments as far as I know. Those circles in the mind of SU never translate into CAD circles. I find I have to redraw parts of an autocad export from sketchup because those line jagginess can look really awful on an otherwise smooth plot. Also, all the overlapping and partial line segments are just awful to work with. Don't know if Layout does anything different though, I don't imagine so.

i'm especially surprised by the looks of the rounded edges... but i guess that's a SketchUp thing, rather than VRay's, right?
Well, now that I play with it more, that's actually mostly a subdivision issue. Here is the same vfsu scene with 2 iterations of SDS instead of one.

RE: Vray for blender
Hey Jonathan - I did buy the license. Once I installed the vray for blender build and saw how good the integration is with vray, I knew right away it would be worth the purchase. I had been trying other blender rendering add-ons earlier - luxrender, thea, yafaray, cycles, but none of them were doing it for me. Also, I never did get indigo to work, nor renderman. Anyway, with vray, there's just no comparison.

RE: Vray for blender
well, vray has a round edges. That's one thing I want to play with sometime.

RE: Vray for blender
@tomDC - yeah, I'm going to learn more about bmesh when I have a chance, looks really powerful. Right now the v/b build is with 2.62

RE: Vray for blender
Pete- sure why not. Have fun! It's all modeled from scratch, so no reason not to share.

RE: Vray for blender
So I thought I would post a relatively simple 1 to 1 comparison of a scene in Sketchup and the same scene in Blender, both rendered with vray (different versions - the SU version is a year or so behind...) Here is the wireframe in SU. I exported as a 3ds mesh into blender. The camera views aren't exact matches, but oh well.
Here is the original photo I based the model on.
Next, I adjusted the materials as best I could in vfsu, set the lighting to real-world units (the bulb in the lamp is 1200 lumens)
Then, I did the same in Blender - except that I used a smooth and a subdivision modifier on the wineglass and the lamp to get the curves nice and clean. The lighting is the same, using the same exposure and light source. The material properties, even though I tried to match, the fog effect seems to be completely different in v/b - much closer to the photo. The colors, even with the same color mapping, etc, are quite different, and seem much more accurate.

RE: Corner Building Finished
WOW!! Really nicely done, great job I love that apartment interior view. Did you use area lights behind the camera to light it? It's so clean and nicely textured.

RE: Visopt for exterior
Yeah, there's been a fix with the gamma level, so renders with the current version will be brighter. You can adjust with the inverse using 0.4545
-
RE: Visopt for exterior
I would suggest using the default visopt, it's a good place to start. You can then tweak things like GI levels (remove TexSky, and check default lights in global options, so you get more ambient light and still have sun shadows) or irrmap settings (increase hsph subdivs), etc. It seems a lot of the older visopts you find online are from previous versions and may cause errors. Make sure you look at the various tutorials for vfsu to understand which settings to change.

RE: Detail in Vray render
You can always export an line drawing from SU, and then overlay (multiply) over the rendering in photoshop (or similar)
Render apps typically render only geometry.
Take a look at the manuals for vray and try setting up a displacement or a bump map - you can get depth quite easily that way. -
RE: Detail in Vray render
vray doesn't render lines. You need to actually cut grooves in the decking, or use a displacement map.
