BTW, thanks for the recent Catchup, it was very informative and comprehensive, a true testament to dedication by the forum board and yourself.
      Keep up the great work!
Comment, although I don't think 3D modelling, on Google Earth would be a good subforum, on sketchucation, I have not found, a good, effective and responsive google earth sub/forum, other than the big one.

Regarding the above comment, searching on this site, there are 423 posts and 29 pages in search for "Google Earth". Is there merit in creating a separate subforum for Google Earth under the
"Extensions & External Applications" In my opinion, it would be beneficial to collect and develop wisdom and effectiveness for 3D modelling and google earth. What do you think?

    • RE: Drape Tool for DTM Roads

      Greetings
I apologize in advance for offering something that probably won't work with your sophisticated model.
However is there an option for draping using the Google Earth with a 2d map of your model, then importing that terrain into SU to work with?
Attached is a topo map(could be any 2d digital model) draped onto GE(plus). The roads, trails and markers were added separately into GE. This could be imported into SU for further modelling enhancements.
With a simple small rough scale model it works well.
      Good Luck

    • RE: Cheese wheel stand

      Just a Thought
If the stand is just for cheese display, its fine. However if it is used to cut, the lip on the top may get in the way of cutting, or get easily damaged. A cutting board top or thick butcher block top is an option? The cheese is heavy and won't fall off the stand easily.

    • RE: Intersecting group things with other grouped things

      Hi
May I offer a different method of setting up some of your intersecting components. Attached is skp with your component66 now called beam66. When you setup the component, in dialog edit the axis to layout along your beam. I have also setup an attached component on the beam66 called joint which aligns with the intersection of your central housing.
Keeping the joints and intersections in place allows you to move it into copied positions easier. When all the beams and joints are copied and in the right position then by double clicking one beam then clicking the joint and deleting it, it will be removed from all components at the same time...
We use this method when designing timber frame joinery.
      Hope it helps.

Nice model! What CNC-setup do you use? I don't remember the make of the setup I'll use, but I guess that doesn't really matter anyway, I'm only the designer - not allowed within 10' from the machine πŸ˜‰ they know I'll just get more stupid ideas if I get to close πŸ˜„

Glad to hear your problems are solved. My cnc machine is called carvewright and the dedicated software is called designer. SU cannot be used directly but I can work with cad based output(dxf). The modelling problem is working with transition needed to set the height or depth of cut, using the greyscale range(0 to 255).

      Still working out the kinks!

    • RE: Problem with origin when exporting to DWG

      Hi
I wanted to test creating an egg shape from sketchup for wood carving and attached is a pdf file showing the results.
Using the egg shape, I used followme tool to create a 3d model, reduced it to half shell, exported SU as a dxf(corrected) with hidden lines revealed. I then used Carvepic program(google it) to convert it to greyscale heightmap needed for my cnc machine software. Sorry I am not familiar with any other cnc setups, but as you can see it can be carved.
      Good Luck

      Hi Gidon
I have submitted previous posts concerning woodworking prior to woodworking subforum getting up and running. (adirondack chair)see link at http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=8084.
Thanks for the advice. I have exported SU in dxf mode however the only way to import these files is to convert to png first and then import it into my cnc program so it is not a true vector translation. There are some ruby developments happening but I will have to research it further, and have a go at the

    • Carving with sketchup?

      Golden Greetings
I have bought a small cnc wood carving machine and am exploring the potential to use my 3d sketchup designs and converting them to ptn or mpc files that my software called designer will be able to use. The depth of the carve is based on grayscale shading in the carvewright software. The deeper the cut is indexed by darker shades. Here is an example of my first carving on cedar.
Has anyone used sketchup designs that has been converted to cnc software formats?
      Thanks

      Greetings
Please see my first attempt at sketchy physics. Also it is my first attempt using Youtube, video recording using, hypercam2, and video editing using an older version of nerovision(3). I am searching for some basic howto tutorials(not video examples) using sketchyphysics, and more effective and efficient means to record, process and format these dynamic model video. I really appreciate this and apologize that I need the SU for dummies type of explanation.

Hellooo out there. Anybody home? Canada is so big you have to yell pretty loud to be heard!

I come from Golden BC in the Rocky Mountains. Sketchup is used with google earth to map some special trails and places, along with attempts on woodworking and timberframe designs.
Whats sketchups have you been doing?

    • Upgrading computer - Vista Yes or no?

      Golden Greetings
My XP computer loves SU, GE and all the other XP friendly software and graphics, but it is not portable. I am looking for advice on purchasing a new laptop(sorry I can't jump to apple), that may get me into "Vista, graphics and software upgrade" issues. I have seen posts like http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=79&t=2507&p=11577&hilit=vista#p11577
where SU Vista etc problems are discussed.

It sounds like I should wait until Vista + graphics upgrade problems go away or or get XP operated laptop. Is there advice on preferred laptop models, setups and recommended ways to avoid traps, glitches and GIGO(garbage in = garbage out). I am remote and 6 hours return drive from most service and tech support.

Thanks for your advice to smooth out the pending tempest. I trust that it will help me and others facing the upgrade dilemma. I'm sure there are other forums to ask but I'll start here?

      Hey
I was barking up the wrong tree. The right click would not group the text, but hitting edit make component did. The text component frame had to be resized, then I locked it, purged the component list and it(text component) disappeared. Yes it flys around on orbit, but still works to lock it, and still with an unlock, explode and edit option.

This will work, however the attached has the what I call the title block(screen text in upper left)). I want to preserve it, so when other users sent it back with revisions, so I know which model it has been edited from.
