    • RE: FlexWindow 2.1 - dynamic component

Been using FelxWindow 2.0 and Flexdoor on a project I've been working on and the dynamic component work really well.

I also appreciate that the author is quick to respond to a question and take suggestions for improvements. I suggest he consider trapezoidal shaped windows, common in residential design as well as different styles of windows such as casement, awning, slider and double hung. Those would really make this a valuable tool.

    • RE: BuildEdge PRO is Here!!

I solved the problem and perhaps this will help others.

Call the Keymark office in Boulder. They will take your credit card info over the phone and then once cleared, the tech support folks will send you the authorization code by email.

      Some additional info

      1. They are still working on BuildEdge and hope to release something next year.Although dont know what that means.
      2. Sketchucation is the site to find any updates.
      3. You can install it on two machines but you have to shut down one before you can start the other. So one machine in the office and one at home is ok povided you remember to shut down one before starting the other. Too complicated so I bought a second copy and dont have to remember to shut down before I go home.

    • RE: BuildEdge PRO is Here!!

I've been trying to two days to contact BuildEdge to purchase a license. There is no phone number I could find and clicking on either the email link (which works but I get no reply) or the live chat link (constantly told no one is available to chat) leads me to believe that as of now, November 15-16, they are not communicating and likely not accepting orders.

      Anyone have a suggestion?

      Thanks,

      Allen

but not all designers are architects.

Speaking of semantics... I am a Designer who is not an Architect, although that's only because AIA lobbied for laws that make it illegal to call yourself one if you're not registered or licensed by any one state... Even though Merriam Webster dictionary thinks I am.

      Definition of ARCHITECT

The meaning of ARCHITECT is a person who designs buildings and advises in their construction. How to use architect in a sentence.

      Definition of ARCHITECT
      1
: a person who designs buildings and advises in their construction
      2
: a person who designs and guides a plan or undertaking <the architect of American foreign policy>

p.s. per my attorney... I at no time referred to myself as or alluded that I am an Architect.

I might add that I do not begrudge AIA or Architects for protecting their hard work and names from being misused or diluted. I know how much sacrifice and hard work it takes to become a registered Architect.

      Hi Kris,

Licensing laws (that I'm familiar with) requires you to pass an NCARB endorsed exam. To qualify for the exam you must either be a graduate of an accredited university/college and have worked for a licensed architect for a number of years or interned for a longer period of time.

Have you considered taking the exam? There are a number of home study aids as well as classroom opportunities to learn the academic elements.

I know several people who either never completed or attended college but diligently prepared and passed the exam.

You should look into it. Good luck. I'm sure you can do it.

    • RE: Kelby Training Subscribers Around?

Are you able to get to the link at the top called "Online Dashboard"?

If yes, Categories and Instructors provide drop down menus.

Click on a category, for example, Lightroom, and see all the courses for Lightroom. Select Watch Now button.

If you did all that and the lesson didnt begin I would reach out to their customer support international number or email them.

I find the new layout and implementation a major step backwards from where they were. But the courses have been great for me.

      Good luck,

They seem to be trying a new format.

I found they made the change a day or two ago and they likely will need to tweak it. I am able to view the training videos but its not as simple to get there as it used to be.

What happens when you log on? I now go to my administration page and have to click my way to the tutorials.

      Good luck,

    • RE: SketchUP 8

I've been reading the thread and find it interesting and somewhat informative.

We use sketchup as a tool in our office not a religion. As a tool, it works incredibly well and the dollar to value gained is extremely high.

I know more and more firms in this area for sure are using sketchup as a regular part of their design process. Some of these firms are the celebrity types in Manhattan that can afford to buy any hammer in the hardware store they choose and have many hammers.

We don't use all the abilities of sketchup. just the ones we need and for that, it works incredibly well.

For $95 I get the upgrade or, if I choose, I can pass and not buy it. The cost is not going to change my life and for those not in my situation, they can elect to freely download or not download the free version.

Ok, it didnt come out with everything everyone hoped for and whether its a point upgrade or a whole number upgrade is a matter of symantics. Photoshop rarely if ever changes its interface which I appreciate. I have the latest version and everything I know how to use and existed in a previous version is still right there. I hate when Microsoft rearranges the toolbars and work flow with each new update so I dont update. Last I checked, I was free to do so.

If Google stops developing sketchup today, I would still have a great tool. I also still use pencil 1.0 and pen 2.0.

Its going to be a sunny day so I'm going outside. Later.

    • RE: 2nd Prize in a competition

      Tomasz,

I've been to Auschwitz/Birkeneau and in my humble opinion, your design is superior to the winning design because I believe your design captures the mood of the place. The winning design could be built anywhere and memorialize any event. To me it had no soul.

      Best wishes,

    • RE: A couple new DWC's...

      Hi Tom,

Sorry for the delayed response. By repetitive I mean that the trees of a species appear to be identical one after the other of if different too subtle a difference. So they appear cloned and therefore un-natural.

Small point but when you exist in your rarified layer of great work I thought it worth mentioning. For me I'd be happy to do half as good.

      Enjoy the weekend,

      Hi Tom,

Haven't posted in a while (me that is not you) but these just required a comment. They're truly beautiful.

My only comment, a minor one, is that the trees are too repetitive which isn't natural.

      Other than that, they're terrific.

      Inspiring,

    • RE: Camera Lenses - SLR to DSLR compatible?

      Chris,

Short answer is no. There are adaptors you could buy that would let you mount the nikon lens to the canon body but none of the electronics, auto focus etc would work so they would be manual focus, and you would need to manually set the apature and the exposure speed. Sorry,

    • RE: How do you word your invoices?

      Adding my thoughts here,

Invoices are amounts due for the period covered and should not include contractural language. Payment terms and late payment are contractural. I try to put a late charge as the last paragraph before the signatures and when questioned by clients about late charges I always say that if they pay their bills on time, there are none and if they persist in complaining about late charges, then they're not the right client because they're telling you they WILL be late.

After the invoice is sent, the following month we send a statement not another invoice.

We also tell clients that payments due after a certain number of days then we reserve the right to stop working.

      Hope this helps.

      Tom,

Those were some of the nicest looking watercolors I've seen in some time. I'd like to hear from the people that used to actually take brush and a pot of water but if I didn't know better, I would have thought that's exactly what you've done.

Hope you do well with them and the project. Happy holidays and wishing everyone a better 2009.

    • RE: CATIA

      Paul,

This is what I know. Catia was developed as a design and production tool for the French aerospace industry. It can be used to construct complex architectural designs and is one of many BIM (Building Information Modeling) tools, Revit is another example of a BIM product.

Frank Gherry licensed it and hired programmers to expand it or personalize it into Digital Architect which adds tools specifically for architecture and construction.

Steep learning curve? I would certainly think so.

      Good luck,
