    • RE: Reasons why to go on SU 2013 ...

Following on from that, Juan; it would seem that now...with a choice of TWO plugin stores and a revised GUI...would be a good time for everyone to do some overhauling of their plugins and the layout of their toolbars.
This might take quite some time to get right; and I wouldn't want to lose all that hard work by being presented with a new release and told I have to perform a clean install...and hence back to first base.

For this reason, I put in a Feature Request for some way of saving any custom configuration to an external file, so that it could survive any such re-install. I don't mind taking time out to Spring clean...I'd just prefer to do it the once.
John Bacus got quite excited about this idea and took it one stage further, suggesting that users would then be able to save a whole collection of UIs, depending on what they were doing. For instance, instead of having a gazillion icons crowding your screen, you could have an 'organic modeling' setup with just the toolbars like Artisan, Round Corners, TIG's Extrude Tools etc. Or you could have a Housbuilder UI with all the parametric roof and walls plugins. Then, having finished that part of the job, you could seamlessly load a landscaping UI with all the topographical stuff and Ivy Maker, Tree Maker etc.
Sounds like a plan to me. πŸ˜„

      Yeah, what Gai said.
Think of it just like cutting a shape out of a printed sheet or magazine page. You can actually develop quite an interesting to and fro between SU and an image editor.
Here is your basic profile worked up a little and textured in SU.
However....if you were to leave all the textures on a flat face, before push/pulling; then select the whole of that face...bricks, coping, window etc. and r-click, SU will then offer you Combine Textures...which enables you to export a single, combined texture as below.

This can be quite useful if you want to produce relatively low-poly versions, but packed with detail...like an entire street. You could model detailed individual houses, export a combined texture of the the various elevations, then just do enough minimal push/pulling to make it look 3D.

    • RE: Newbie with a question on importing images

      Welcome Joshua.
It shouldn't be a problem. Simply import the image and trace over it using SketchUp's line and arc tools. You can either use the default number of segments in the arc (12) or change it to anything you like by simply selecting the tool then typing the number of required segments followed by Enter. You don't need to place the cursor anywhere...just start typing; you'll see the figures appear in Measurement box.
In the attached file, I have imported the image, then scaled it (by drawing a line along the base, which I then used the tape measure on...followed by typing in a nominal 20 ft, then Enter. This will scale whatever length the line happens to be to 20 ft...and the rest of the model with it.
I then simply traced the outline...drawing just the left hand side then duplicating/flipping it to ensure complete symmetry...before sticking the semicircle on the top. You will then have a shape capable of being Push/Pulled.

If that jpg had been fully textured with bricks and coping etc, you could have exploded the image before tracing, then deleted the unwanted exterior part, leaving a fully textured shape which could then be pulled into 3D.

I am a SU7free user. I plan to upgrade to the pro version. I installed SU2013 and wanted to buy SU2013pro but since there are so many problems at the moment, plugins that doesn't work properly and so on, I still use the stabile SU7 and wait for the solutions...

May be I come back in month or so to buy the full version.

My experience is that 2013 is rather more stable than V8. I'm still waiting for a bugsplat...no, I tell a lie; I had one yesterday when just playing around and undoing a Ruby action on heavy geometry for the umteenth time...something I've had in every version since Ruby was introduced.
Most of the Ruby issues seem to be connected to incorrect permissions on individual's systems...something that any maintenance release is not likely to fix.
      Currently, I don't have any problems...and I'm using most of TIG's TT's, Fredo's, Chris Fulmer's, the new TreeMaker...as well as V-Ray and Twilight.

You can run both versions side by side (or beta testers would be in a real mess, wouldn't they?) Together with their full complement of plugins.

Don't they learn anything from previous mistakes...?? πŸ˜•

      Apparently not, Kim.
I have some sympathy with (Jason's?) suggestion that maybe they just ought to throw the whole program out there for free and charge for the bolt-ons. But I think that particular horse exited the stable some time ago...too late closing the door now. Whatever extensions were charged for would probably appear in some form of free format, given the number of talented coders out there. Their functionality might be a little limited and they may be a little slower, being Ruby not C++, but Hey! free is free.
This situation already exists regarding exportable AEC formats. There are numerous ruby exporters now that circumvent the lack of such export options in Make; and there are plenty of professionals who have absolutely no need for either a Style Builder or Layout.

If they really are going to go down this dual path with Trimble, then someone, somewhere needs to sit down and have a very serious think about what features are absolutely necessary in a free version. There surely has to be a balance between giving away a decently-featured (and extendable) Make to satisfy the needs of hobbyists and the 'little guy' (and which will also act as an incentive and longer-term 'trial-version for commercial users to upgrade to Pro) and putting something out there that people can use to make serious money (if not an entire living) from without contributing a cent towards its development.

Kris, are you running SU in Administrator mode? You can set the program exe file to do this every time in Properties. I had to do this some time ago when a few of Fredo's scripts were acting up (before he updated the library file)
I'm not saying it'll solve the problem, but it's worth a try. I've had that error in the past with other Rubies...infuriating when the 'missing' file is staring you in the face.

....in 7 years of SU, I have never had a need to back save an SU file until now...

Nothing to do with the previous back-and-forth concerning that particular model...but that simple statement begs the question as to why the dev team feel it necessary to provide such a facility in a release (Make) that is supposed to be for non commercial use.
I can't imagine a situation in which a hobbyist (or even a single freelancer 'bending' the rules) would need to save a file in any version other than the one they are using.

If Trimble want to monetise their new acquisition as rapidly as possible, the way to go would be to more clearly separate Pro and Make to ensure that people using it for earning serious money pay their fair share of the development costs, rather than pushing all those costs onto the back of the honest Pro users..

A quote from a guitar-modding blog in which SU Make was, quite properly, being recommended for such 'hobbyist' design work. "My brother-in-law, a partner in an engineering firm, says many of his fellow engineers use the free version for most everything that doesn't need to be done in a dedicated engineering app."
There's your hemorrhage in income stream, right there.

    • RE: ? SU 2013 Custom Toolbars

The fix, for the "can only dock in a single column" problem (it's not a bug...it's just that double-width columns are simply incompatible with the new toolbar flexibility)...is to create new toolbar called Large Toolset 2 (or whatever) and drag every second icon off the large toolset onto that one. Then you can dock them side by side looking exactly the same as before.
I put in a Feature Request for your new icon/toolbar layout to be able to be saved to an external file that can survive a complete re-install of the program...'cos if I'm going to all this trouble, I only want to have to do it once.

    • RE: Starter coming in and needing some help...

I think the real problem is that the image appears to be a gif file. Now although gifs have transparency, their bitrate is too low for SU. They are only only indexed 256 color instead of full 24bit RGB like jpg files or the 32 bit RGBA png files.
You'll need to raise the image's bitrate in some image editor that allows a change of mode, then save it as a png with transparency.

Brilliant plugin, Pascal...and very configurable...both during and post production. πŸ‘ πŸ‘ πŸ‘
The tree on the left is a default Olive...but with simplified leaf geometry (down to 3 faces per leaf). It is now down to only 21,000 faces.
The tree on the right is another default Olive, but with even simpler leaves (1 face) but double the number of leaves; and minus all the small twigs. This is down to only 12,000 faces. It was only 7000 before I doubled the leaf count (by simply selecting the foliage group, duplicating and rotating it.)

    • RE: SketchUp 2013 ;)

A couple of things are worth mentioning. I'll admit it, I am cutting them some slack on this release...but am expecting solid progress in the next one. This makes me no worse than those at the other extreme, claiming there's nothing more than new icons after 3 years.

First thing: Galling or not, I guess we have to simply disregard the final 2 years with Google. That was then, this is now. It is likely that whatever was being worked on during that time is either now irrelevant to Trimble (hence not in this release) or remains the property of Google (hence not in this release) After all, some of the team actually stayed with Google, indicative of whatever it was they were up to, they are still working on it.

That leaves just one year with Trimble, during which the team has had to turn the entire program around 180Β°...from an increasing narrow focus on the needs of Google Earth to shaping it up ready to shoot off in myriad directions if it is to serve as the platform across the entire range of Trimble's GIS-based software...which was the stated aim of the purchase.

It's also been asked "What is the big deal regarding the Extensions Warehouse when we already have the Plugin Store here at SCF? We don't need it."
Well, much though I love it, SCF isn't the entire SU universe. It has close on 200,000 members; SU users number in the millions (as do Trimbles...even before its purchase). WE may not need the EW, but the vast majority of SU users do...because they ain't here. I come across users on a daily basis, some of whom seem unaware of features even as basic as Follow Me; and are presumably utterly ignorant that plugins even exist.

But perhaps even more than this, the EW is indicative of a fundamental change in attitude. It's obvious that Corporate Google (as opposed to the dev team) couldn't have cared less about this kind of dedicated user base. Don't forget, they forcibly closed the old @Last forum,, upon which SCF is heavily based...despite the outcry of the users and the thinly-veiled reluctance of the @Lasters. SCF wouldn't even exist but for the disinterest of Google; it would probably still be Coen's tips and tutorials. They simply didn't care that a community arose here on SCF which resulted in plugins to hugely enhance the AEC (and general modeling) usability of SU. They didn't care, because they were only interested in its use as far as Google Earth was concerned. The simple fact that they tolerated a situation in which the major enhancements to their own baby were being made via a 3rd party website demonstrate that disinterest as clear as daylight.

Trimble appears to be a different animal. It would seem that they do actually care about the modelling aspects; and are therefore not content to let the extensions that facilitate real progress in that direction to be the sole preserve of such a 3rd party. If they are truly preparing to roll-out SU across the entire Trimble community (most of whom may never have come across it before) how else would they do that other than create the EW in order that they might download whatever extensions bend the basic program in their personal, required direction...send them all over to SCF? I don't think so.

If all this is going to work, though, we do need to see MAJOR improvements in the core program in terms of geometry handling. They need to listen. One small example...easily fixed; I've been asking for them to reinstate the face count into Entity Info ever since they removed in in V3 or V4. How hard can it be? This isn't rocket science. You have a program that is notoriously geometry-intolerant. You now have (thanks to Ruby) a wide choice of methods to achieve a particular end. Supposing for instance you need to model an organic-shaped chair seat...and there are 30 of these babies in the office you are designing. It's a matter of no small significance that you try a few different methods and are then quickly able to tell which is the most efficient, size-wise.
Having to copy all these trials into a completely different instance of SU, so you can read the face count in Model Info, rather than simply have it there...INSTANTLY...in Entity Info....LIKE YOU USED TO HAVE, isn't my idea of efficient.
Yes, I know there may be some workaround, like using Goldilocks to count the edges...but that's hardly the point.
