Great start on what can be a very nice render. πŸ‘

Thank you. Still not getting my head around artificial lights and in particular overlapping of illumination from different light sources.
I like this render program as it is and know it will get better. It challenges my grey cell but hey, what's life without a challenge.

Before you tackle interior lighting it would be worth exploring why your scenes are struggling to light interior spaces.

It could be a glass setting or your HDR is not casting enough light.

Add a Sun light along with the HDR and make it shoot light in the window. Adjust its strength and radius to get it to your liking.

That's what I would do before even adding any assets into the scene. Get the interior space lit how you want.

I was finding the larger premises difficult to motivate myself with so am going back to the smaller. The backgound/hdri has auto exposure selected in Rayscaper but is washed out.

The old SLR dilemna of exposing for either the interior or exterior but never both.

What is the setup for the window glass? Is it thickened? Two planes?

Half inch glass pane with 10% opacity. Works elsewhere.

I reduced the hdri to 0.01%.

OK HDRI only light source outside the model, painted on to a surface half the building height as a scaling mechanism. HDRI set to 0.80.

like the view and the subdued interior lighting on this one. Well done. πŸ‘

                              Good stuff mike!

You mentioned that auto-exposure is doing funky things? Is the image below using auto-exposure? If so, what does it look like without auto-exposure?

For the window glass, make sure you are using the glass material with thin & transparent shadows:
