Syd Mead's VEX (model progression)
-
My next project. Syd Mead's VEX.
This and one other drawing are all I have to go on. There will be much, er, artistic license.
The only really hard part I see will be the wheels, which look like early versions of complex spring wheels and some kind of interior cockpit.
If anyone has better reference pics, please share them if you can.
-
Go for it, good luck and remember we gonna render the hell out of it in the end.
-
Men on Mars, Moon, ...
-
You have this one?
-
Here's one.
-
Thanks hellnback. That will be a big help with the wheels.
Thanks John, but that is a different vehicle.
-
Syd. I can only wish I can do half his work.
-
A slightly larger shot, might show some more detail.
As far as the wheels tho, the source (http://forums.cgsociety.org/archive/index.php/t-896887.html) states
"*This is a continuation of the VEX concept illustrated by Syd Mead. It is a long-term mobile living space for astronauts and allows for continuous exploration far from the landing zone.I had the wheel design floating around as a personal project for a long time, and after I learned about this contest, I discovered that Syd created a concept drawing that had almost the exact same wheel structure. I decided that I had to move with this coincidence and pay homage to the original*."
So the wheels might differ from Syd's original, just a heads up.
-
Thanks again, hellnback.
The wheels look close enough and as I only have 2 pictures for reference and neither have very close detail of the wheel structures, what I model will have to do.
But it's all for fun, so hey, why not?

Still struggling with the wheels.
You can do it, even if you have to make it up as you go.
You only have to make one.
-
Still struggling with the wheels. Just not enough detail in the reference pictures. I really just need to make a design decision and then go with it.
The rest looks easy enough to do.

This is true.

Thats funny, i only watched "Last day on mars" last nite and there was a rover the astronauts used to get around the surface that i was planning on modelling which is very similar to this rover, you can find details about the movie here but i will say its not a great movie but the near future tech is cool http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1709143/
Now you got me started, lol -
Test and hold until tomorrow.
-
Not much to look at right now. Just trying to get the overall outline shape and scale of the wheels.
Created as component and then duplicated and mirrored. That's the middle line down the middle.
-
Still planning out the treads. Those will probably be last.
Inner springs and central "hub" added.
Inner springs created same process as rim knuckles. (edit outer spring component, add inner spring half)
-
Never mind. Got inspired.
Believe it or not (I certainly don't) the wheel is almost done. An inner spring arch and then the outer treads and that's it! (the central support and steering column will come after)
Replaced test spring outlines with a Soap bubble plug-in construct, added depth with Joint Push/Pull, then regular Push/Pull to "back-fill", then made into component, then duplicated around the rim. Remaining surfaces deleted.
Pivot/knuckle joint on end connecting to rim was then added to the spring component and its editing level, instantly duplicating it for each.
-
First tread plate.
After the full tread assembly is completed by adding the spring arms, the large cylinder wall will be deleted, creating an open framework.
-
A very cool washing machine!
-
Looking good Bryan.
