SketchUp 2013 ;)

I haven't seen any discussion regarding the cost to skip 2013 and upgrade from SketchUp Pro 8 to SketchUp Pro 2014. Will it be $95 or would one have to buy another full $590 license to skip a release cycle?
The upgrade from SketchUp Pro 8 to SketchUp Pro 2013 is $95 plus state tax.

What I am worried is not the lack of features but the changes on things that were already there. For example before you could use free license for commercial use and now you can't?...
Removing some benefits that we had before is not something Trimble will expect people to be happy about specially with a release that most are having to dig deep to find what is new.
I am exited about the changes under the hood that will establish the foundation for greatest things to come so I'll cut Trimble some slack and give them credit in that regard.

I find 2013 to be, in a word, unimpressive.

I've just loaded SKUP 2013 to a Win7 64 bit PC & still can't get the file image previews to work in Windows Explorer - can anyone else get theirs to view the files?
Bring back WinXP & SKUP 7.1! -
I'm not sure why anybody would want to "cut them slack" -- after 32 months(almost 1000 days) of development this is the best they could do.
Anybody who thinks this is good enough is not paying attention to the pace of development in other packages -- I've seen many point updates (free) in other softwares that have more (and better) features added than this "major" upgrade.
Do you honestly think that 12 months from now they will have accomplished enough to justify the next round of wasted money?
The writing is on the wall -- time to move on, and I'll tell anybody who will listen the same thing.
Best,
Jason. -

That's a known Windows issue, 32bit apps don't get file-image on 64bit PCs.... unless you get MysticThumbs... there are several threads discussing this...

So far Trimble gets a failing grade from me for its influence on SketchUp.
In what way does Trimble show a different influence than Google? I don't see any influence.
There's a famous saying in Germany: "You can't rebuild in 10 years what has been rotting for 40 years" (meant about the previous eastern Germany).
I think it fits well to SketchUp. The transition to Trimble has cost a lot of time, effort and resources to rebuild infrastructure that is not yet visible to many. A lot of the foundations of SketchUp have been renewed (latest build systems, UI framework) which is the foundation for something new. While the development team has been continuously grown at a rapid rate, I'd expect visible changes to appear through the Extension Warehouse. This is the way through which Trimble and SketchUp give you new tools.I remember someone claiming one of the Google releases as one of these "under the hood" improvements that we'd soon be reaping rewards from. I didn't believe it then. I don't believe it now.
Trimble have rolled out two "new releases" where the major difference has been a new logo and now a new name. Quite frankly the Trimble releases haven't been worth the download bandwidth and the time that it takes to set up plugins and toolbars.
I don't have ANY faith that Trimble are going to make improvements. Sketchup as it is now is pretty much all SU will ever be.

but... no need for a 64bit version...

I'm simply speechless. Do they really believe that the majority of Pro users are willing to pay for this "maintenance/ bugfix" update!?
For the new feature of the customizable toolbar - this has been possible in the Mac version a long time ago already incl. for 3rd party tools and ruby plugins. But now it can only be customized with native tools(!). Every restart will wipe out all non-native plugins and tools.. Sorry, but this is a step back and not a new feature! Now given the speedy development of the past, one tends to assume that it might get re-addressed again as a "new feature" in SU2014..Does this mean no customizable toolbar (Just native tools is as good as none). The toolbars and windows in both SU and LO are the worse in any program I've seen. Who would purposely create such a mess? Now they took out the only thing that works. Before I say more...

Hi Everybody,
I've been reading the comments here and I too am disapointed with the new release.
The thing i'm not sure of is if it's allowed to keep using previous free versions for commercial use?
Greetings Twan

Trimble have promised that there would be always a free version, they keep their promise but with this Important change (I'll still use an older version of GOOGLE Sketchup...thanks to all rubyscripters and Sketchucation)
It is certainly a Marketing decision but "Sketchup2013/Make" seems similar to Autodesk products name ( strange considering that Sketchup has influenced some of the Autodesk products )

Hi Twan,
In my opinion, you can go ahead and use SU 6, 7 and 8 for commercial purposes, too. The new TOS is about "SketchUp Make" - which non of the above are called.
Edit: found this in the new SU 2013 FAQ (bolded by me):

As with all of our previous releases, we don’t require you to update to a new version of SketchUp if you don’t want to. But when we move on to a new release of SketchUp, we very rarely (read: almost never) issue updates or fixes for older versions of SketchUp. You’re welcome to continue using the version of SketchUp you have today (for what you use it for today); we just offer less (or no) support for it going forward.

(say I make a simple copy / past between the Folder Plugins )That's what I did - and I started to play with the free version first, too.
Be careful not to overwrite any native SU files in the Plugins folder however. -
Does a plugin for the V6, 7, 8 free is compatible to the 2013 free or I must reload it with the new system?
so some thousand
(say I make a simple copy / past between the Folders Plugins ) -
And that is working ?

More or less.

Why should not Trimble add their tools via their own API (how a well-architectured software is supposed to work)?
And: A multi-line Ruby console with unit tests has been added by the SketchUp team, whether you want it to be true or not. -
Thank for this mitigated answer!

Yeah they say not to do it but I'm lazy like that. And I enjoy breaking things.
Revizto didn't migrate properly, They're fixing it now.
Jim's old custom toolbar plugin doesn't work.
Extrusion tools supposedly didn't work but mine came over fine, I updated it like TIG said anyway.I had to open and close sketchup after plugins were copied over and I had to checkmark plugins twice to make sure they popped up.
I have of course not used all my plugins though...
