Just wiki it: "The word has a similar use in modern psychology where it describes one of the dark triad personalities, characterised by a duplicitous interpersonal style associated with cynical beliefs and pragmatic morality."

Somebody was probably cynically telling you it was for "the greater good" when they were screwing you over, Jeff. THAT would be machiavellian.

But maybe the "pragmatic morality" plays into the classic ethics class question as you say.
