I find that the create component dialogue box, sometimes has this option ticked when opened, but other times not. Is there a way to have this selection always present?

So what I want to do is ALWAYS have the selection replaced by the component when I create a component in the same way whenever I create a group the selection becomes a group.

      Just so I am clear.

No way to force it. It depends on your selection. If you've selected all connected geometry, or a face and it's edges that is a hole inside another face then it will be checked. If you've selected just parts of the mesh it will be unchecked.

I find that usually if it's unchecked then you've modelled too much before making the mesh into a component.

TT beat me to it, but since I typed it already, here...

If you have selected a set of connected geometry [i.e. everything that touches, like selecting with a treble-click] the option to replace the selection with the new component is ticked; this is because Sketchup assumes that's what you want to do, although you can of course overrule it and keep the geometry, and you'll have the now now unused component available in the Browser for use elsewhere.

If you have selected only some parts of the connected geometry then the option to replace the selection with the new component is not ticked; this is because Sketchup assumes that you might want to keep the geometry whole, as removing a part of it might mess thing up [although any edges shared by non-selected faces should be replicated rather than moved into the new context anyway], again you can overrule and replace the selected geometry with the component if desired...

There is no way to reset this default - the checking for the replacement-tick is just part of the creation process, just like resetting axes and gluing/cutting behaviors etc...

Mike, ThomThom and TIG covered this perfectly but I will add the following.

The key to avoiding the problem you're having is to make sure that you draw only what will be in the component and create the component before moving on to the next part. If you do this, you'll never run into that box being unchecked.

Granted there are some cases where you can't avoid it such as splitting some molding or something created with Follow Me into individual parts but when you run into those situations, you'll just have to tick the box.

My input on this would be that I have never once, no not ever, wanted that box unticked. I could also wish it was always ticked by default, with perhaps a warning if needed letting the user know that they might not have selected everything they wanted to. But even that would be unneeded for 99.9% of my usage.

I agree Chris. I've never not wanted it checked but it is a good clue that you've not selected all the attached geometry. A clearer message would be better, though.

I know it makes sense, but this one trips me up more than I'd like to admit.

Thanks for the replies folks, I have been pondering this, perhaps it could be an option in some future version of sketchup. I very much appreciate the time taken to reply and there is a fair bit to think about that will make things easier. On it.
