Can anyone give me assistance on how to make a conical roof image with segmented staves such that I could figure out what size each piece would be and the angle each stave should be cut to in order to make the structure. I am looking at the bottom diameter to be 20" x 12" tall with a 3.5" opening at the top. The opening will be filled with a turned finial. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks,
      Mike

It's pretty easy to do. How many staves do you want to use?

As Dave says, it's no so complicated...

To make a cone... make a circle with the required number of segments... Draw a triangle representing the sloping part and use FollowMe on it around the circle's path.
Select all and 'Smooth' at 0 so no edges are invisible.
          Erase unwanted bits.
Make a 'spar' [stave?] along one of the sloping edges.
          Save it as a component.
Use Rotate+Ctrl to make a circular array of the components around circle so you have a #spar' at each node.
Edit one instance of it so it 'marries' with its siblings [which change as you edit].
If you want a 'wedge' of roof instead/as-well... make that and do the copies around instead/as-well.
Make the 'finial' using a vertically drawn cross-section and FollowMe around the circular path...

While TIG was typing I made an example using 8 staves.

I used the Polygon tool to make an octagon for the top and bottom dimensions. Then I used Auto-fold to pull the small one up to make the "cone". Next I split out a single stave from the cone by using Offset for the top and bottom and radials from outside corners to inside corners. The rest was deleted. Then I made a component of the stave and used one of them to sort out the angle.

Thanks guys, let me kinda digest what you have suggested and see if I can replicate it. I have not used the "auto-fold" tool yet. Where in the tool bag is it?

😳 Sorry. I didn't know I was introducing you to something new. Thanks to Gilles for the clarification.

Ok, here is my base model. So how do I get the cone to evolve from here?

Figured out how to raise the roof so to speak. Now to break out one of the staves. Thanks again.

You're right. A simple image can explain more easily than many words. Still, it's pretty common that first time posters don't post images. The important thing is the OP got the help he needed. πŸ˜‰
