House Render without roof
-
Hello,
I'm trying to render a house without the roof, like an example. But the problem is, that if you somehow remove the roof, you get the directly sun to house, how to avoid this, and make it look like rendered with a roof. I hope, you understood what I mean. Thanks

Place a face at the top of the model - where the ceiling should be. Make the normal point into the room and apply a solid material to the side visible from the inside. Then on the other side, the one facing the camera - apply a transparent material.
That's what I did for these renders: http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=81&t=22423&p=189584#p188781

Thanks for the info. Your renders look amazing. However I can't seem to get it to work (but I'm fairly new to Sketchup and Vray). Everytime I apply the transparent material to one side of the face (ceiling), the entire ceiling becomes transparent. Do you have any tips on how to fix this?

Thanks, for some reason it's still not working properly. Would it be too much to ask for the file of that small room that you've made where you've did this? Thanks in advance.

I'm afraid I can't do that. Belong to the office.
But it's simply applying a different material to each side of the face. Can you perhaps post what you got, and we can have a look?

If your 'ceiling' face is inside a group, and that face has no materials applied to it... then if you apply a material to the group both sides of the face will show that one material [although they are in fact in the default front/back materials they will adopt the appearance of the group's material].
However, if you edit the group and add a fully transparent material to the top of the face... and then an opaque white-ceiling material to the underside of the face... then the group's material is ignored and the face's materials prevail... so you can then look down into the room from above and see everything... but from a viewpoint inside the room you will see the white-ceiling material above your head.
This really is straightforward if you apply a little logic...

Thanks everyone. I don't know what the problem was, but I restarted Sketchup and it worked fine after that. So thanks again for all the kind help.
@Thomthom; No problem, I know I was asking for alot. And without trying to come off as too rude, would you mind sharing your vray settings for the floorplan? Mine turns out either too bright or too dark, but that might be the problem of the floor plan itself. It's rather large (office building) and I'm not working with any extra light besides the Vray sun and GI. Would you recommend adding extra (a.i.) lighting?
EDIT: Just watched the video, I guess that answered all my questions, thanks!
